So guns are bad, but also this person deserves no sympathy when they died from gun violence due to their presence at a Trump rally?
I'm out. Gun violence is never okay. People dying from gun violence is never okay. I'm not going to engage in conversation with people who are willing to make, "but, and" arguments on this point.
That’s not what I said. I agree with you. Gun violence is not okay.
It certainly isn’t, which is why we donate to violence prevention nonprofits and vote for political leaders who support restrictions on firearms. It’s why we call and write those political leaders when they fail, time and time again, to meaningfully address the uniquely American issue of gun violence. We work for a better, less violent country for everyone, including those at the Trump rally tonight, even when they hate us for doing it.
I am never going to stop caring about this issue, especially after annually attending funerals for my students who were shot to death in the street for no reason. I was at one last month. I’m not flippant about this issue. I care deeply about it.
You’re just not going to catch me loudly wailing about a shooting at a rally for a person who regularly incites political violence and refers to himself as “the best friend gun owners will ever have” at NRA shows. It’s just not going to happen. All I’ll do here is hope (at times against hope, I think) the loved ones of the victims can find peace, and that those present at this rally can realize just how pernicious this set of beliefs can be.
I condemn guns. I condemn people using guns to deliberately harm other people when they aren’t defending themselves or someone else in a situation where it’s clear the other person intends to do harm themself. I think this situation we are in is incredibly dangerous and I am scared what it means for our democracy and for the people who live here, especially those who are marginalized.
But we also need to remember that it is the people who were at this rally and the person who was speaking there who have created this situation. I think this shooter was deeply misguided and should not have done what they did today. But also fuck the people who have embraced this would-be-dictator for the past eight years. We are here because they have put us here. I am sorry someone lost their life today and for the people who loved that person, but I won’t pretend that I can even begin to empathize with their presence at what is essentially a hate rally.
So guns are bad, but also this person deserves no sympathy when they died from gun violence due to their presence at a Trump rally?

Gun violence is always bad, but the victims today are the ones who literally fight against protecting anyone else from gun violence. Of all of the victims in this country that I have empathy for, people at a Trump rally are last on the list. They didn't ask to be killed, but they sure as hell didn't give a shit when anyone else was.
One of the things I hate the most about the last 8+ years is what it has done to my empathy for some people. I am crushed by empathy for marginalized and everyday people who have been victimized by this crowd. I can no longer extend empathy to those who go out of their way to harm people. What goes around comes around.
Of course in a few months we are probably going to have to delete whole threads here for our safety. But for now we have freedom of speech. God help us all.
Is it odd they haven’t released the identify of the shooter yet, I feel like in other shootings it’s released as soon as they’ve been identified? Or is this maybe protocol due to him being a former president/current candidate?
ETA: Maybe they will say more at the press briefing. ETA2: I see they are not.
The New York Post says they have IDed a 20 year old PA man. I’m not going to post the link though.
I went to active shooter training run by the FBI earlier this year and they stressed that for mass shootings, anyway, they no longer use the name of the shooter, as it amplifies the infamy and encourages the next shooter to get a higher head count. Technically though, for whatever it’s worth, I don’t think this was a mass shooting, as there were not four murders (the definition of mass). I hate that we live in a world where I know this.

I said I was done, but apparently I'm not because some of you need a lesson on what it means to be a human fucking person in the face of fascists. Being against gun violence means being ALWAYS against gun violence. Even when the perpetrator shares some of your political values, and even when the victims are those you consider your political enemies.
GUN VIOLENCE IS ALWAYS WRONG. EVEN WHEN YOU POLITICALLY AGREE WITH THE PERPETRATOR. EVEN WHEN YOU POLITICALLY HATE THE VICTIM.
I genuinely don't know how else to say this. Disagreement is good. Protest is good. Violence has its place in the history of democracy. Do you think taking a potshot at Trump today was a step in the right direction? Because if you do I'd love to hear why. Which marginalized people will benefit from today's events? Which will be harmed because Trump's faithful will find any and all reasons to target them?

Several news outlets are reporting the shooter’s name now. A 20-year old white male.
FWIW, a reporter named Matthew Keys, verified with a blue checkmark on X, posted a screenshot of the shooter’s purported voter registration. If accurate, he’s a registered Republican. I can’t remember how we feel about X postings as legitimate sources, though?
ETA: USA Today now is also reporting he was registered as a Republican and was in “active voting status”, whatever that means.

WTF with these damn lectures? You are totally misreading posts. wildrice is not pro violence at all. She is scared as fuck like the rest of us at the repercussions of this act of violence. Stop speaking to us like you are holier than thou and read what people are actually saying. Signed, A Human Fucking Person

Shooter identified. Biden had small press conference. He did end up eventually talking to tfg. What a decent human being Biden is. And once again, the nutters in the gop blame biden, saying he created the culture of violence.

I would just like to add that human beings are complex and have complicated emotions. No one needs a lecture. It is ok and normal to have complicated feelings about someone or people who are harming others and what happens to them/consequences of their actions.
This comes up all the time with survivors of trauma, people who had/have shitty parents, celebrities or politicians who have ruined lives, etc.
After sleeping on it.... things still seem just as bleak this morning. I know as many times as we've all wished trump a timely heart attack, I'm actually grateful that he wasn't killed. I can't even wrap my mind around how (much more) off the rails things would be if he had been seriously injured or killed. So I'm glad he's only injured (and it pains me to say that).
I just hate the freaking double standard. It's already being politicized by the GOP. They blame Biden & the dems. There was no condemnation of violence for Jan 6 or Charlottesville or mass shootings in general..
Trump has built his campaign on the idea that everyone is out to get him. Federal prosecutors, judges, election officials, rival politicians and journalists have all been accused of trying to bring down his campaign and prevent his return to the White House.
For Republicans, the violent episode offered fresh cause to rally around their candidate. They seized on comments Biden made just days ago, when he said on a private donor call that Trump should be in the campaign’s “bullseye,” making the remark as he discussed moving on from his debate performance.
Rep. Mike Collins (R-Ga.), on X shared the Biden quote and wrote that “Joe Biden sent the orders,” while Sen. Marsha Blackburn (R-Tenn.) suggested “an assassination attempt against President Trump” could be linked to what Biden said.
Also, I'm sure there were some initial security failures (in allowing the adjacent building roof to be unsecured?) but I'm quite impressed that the SS was able to take the shooter down that quickly from such a distance. It's tragic that others died as he was trying to shoot Trump, but thankful that more weren't killed or injured.

You all are so bad. Yes, you hate trump and wish he died because he deserved it. Well I guess people who died from lung cancer deserve it since they smoked their whole live. People who love the sun and died from skin cancer brought it on themselves. Sorry not sorry for whose these things happened to your friends and family. They deserved it 🤷🏼♀️

Fuck you. If there is someone in this thread who you take issue with call them out, but you and nsl calling out all of us and treating us all like uneducated low lifes can screw off.
...no? Also, I haven't read the while thread yet, but he is the darling of the ultra rich. And this feels like manipulation 🤷♀️
I would like to know how the assumed shooter and another attendee being dead are manipulation.
you're right. I posted before I knew more of the story. It was a cynical thing to say, and I shouldn't have posted it. For the record, I'm not gleeful or remotely happy about any of this. That this is where we are as a nation terrifies me. And my immediate leap to paranoid conspiracy theories concerns me. I think I need a long break from the internet. This is not who I want to be.

And you are?
I don't think anyone wished harm or death. It's just hard to muster much sympathy when this is a culture he and his party created. They certainly have had zero sympathy when children are shot up in schools. Ffs they've been calling to execute Obama and Biden, trump has named basically a retaliation chair, and they've called for swatting political opponents, real or perceived.
Remember when they once defended Palin for her crosshair comments? I do. Bullseye at least has other contexts.
I think most of us feel real fear for the future implications.

This is how evil feels
Evil is people telling the Uvalde and Sandy Hook families that they are lying about the brutal murders of their children.
Evil is people denying the humanity of the LGBTQ+ community and supporting police officers who murder Black and brown people.
Evil is taking away a person’s right to determine what to do with their own damn body.
Evil is Trump raping a 13-year old girl, stealing confidential documents and selling out CIA operatives for money, encouraging his supporters to storm the capital, stealing money from people over and over again, pardoning war criminals, separating children from their parents at the border, supporting Russia in all of their myriad abuses, and so much more.
Whey weren’t you here talking about all of those moments of evil? Why are you showing up to this board now? 🤔🤔🤔
I am certain this will change many, many minds, in this country, on their gun violence stance. I eagerly await their press conferences. In the meantime, donate to Sandy Hook Promise dot org.

I'll take your word for it as you would know. Majority of us are not advocating violence. We want Trump defeated at the polls, not hurt. At the same time it's maddening that this group is decrying political violence and our Presdent immediately offers a statement of the same, but when people of this group stormed the Capitol on Jan 6th DT told them to keep fighting. We can be pissed at the hypocrisy.

nsl, you are good people. I wish I felt the way you do, but I can't. As I said, it's a loss I attribute to Trump and his followers. I don't think this was a good moment for our country, but I am matching the energy that these people have been giving. Many have died and many more will die from this monster's rhetoric and policies.
Let's not turn on each other for having different ways of processing the disaster that this country has become.
When the shots began I was standing next to my former Axios colleague Alayna Treene, who's now with CNN. Her security guard forced her down and then ushered her into a space below the media riser. A few moments later I did the same as the security guard positioned his body over hers, much as Secret Service agents were doing with Trump on the stage. That's when it hit me that we were in danger. Less than 90 seconds later, we peeked through the riser and emerged to face the anger of Trump supporters, who were turning on the media. "Fake news! This is your fault!" they yelled. "You're next! Your time is coming. " A few tried to break into the media area but were stopped by security guards.

Come off it.
This is a group of people who are actively advocating for gun rights and their message is power, violence and "othering."
I actually feel especially sad for the victims BECAUSE I sort of suspect they carry a mentality that violence happens to "everyone else..NOT US!"
You could tell everyone felt very safe, very protected and..very privileged. No one was running or doing "shooter drills" and that's why it's odd.
The truth is, is that the climate we are in, danger can come for us all, and its absolutely ok to talk about where responsibility lies for that climate . It's sad those people believed they were safe. Safer than everyone they oppressed and yet, look. They weren't. It's shocking. I'm sure it was for them.

I’m not sure why every single human beings thoughts on something can’t be their own. Every one’s thoughts comes from and are influenced by what the political news says and reports. Think of everyone as an individual human being whether they are gay, straight, trans, democrat or republican, it doesn’t matter we are all the same species regardless of these things. . People are so fast to judge everything so try living in an intentional mindset every single day and it will get you further in life with less stress. I hardly watch the news and it doesn’t affect my daily life at all. I go to work, get my check, come home, take car of the house and dogs and spend time with friends and family, travel and do activities. None of this political business stops me from doing what I want to do and accomplish in life everyday. Everyone else can keep running around in circles debating every piece of political news for your whole lives, and it sucks for you. Ignorance is bliss, and I live a very low stress life. Just stay in your own lane, enjoy time with your friends and family, and worry about that because you’ll never know how long they’re going to be around. No time hating, judging and critiquing other people is good for anyone’s health and that will definitely shorten your own life. Have fun debating all this business until November. Lol. Bye ladies. I had a feeling this board would be of entertainment this morning
Also, I challenge you to not watch the news for a whole week. Enjoy your life and see how you feel after that if not, you can go back to the mess of this world.
I know I don’t post here often but I am a team lead for my local Moms Demand Action/Every Town group and I encourage you to look into your local groups. I’m in a very red, very pro-gun state. My Husband has his CC and is a gun owner but we both are very committed to gun violence awareness and gun safety.
What I have found most helpful is we are able to educate people on upcoming gun legislature and it is all backed by facts.
I’d say half my day is spent working as a Be Smart team lead (promoting safe storage) and yesterday was incredibly jarring for me. I don’t wish gun violence against my worst enemy, of which I guess Trump would be on that short list.
Anyways, maybe this doesn’t contribute to the conversation but if anyone needs help finding their local group or even if you just want some resources on gun sense candidates, feel free to DM me and I can help!

This all works out nicely for you until - you or someone you love needs a life saving abortion and can't access one. You or someone you love have a major medical problem that comes out of nowhere and you have a ton of medical bills, lose your job because you can't keep up with work due to medical problems, and have no safety net for long term unemployment. You or someone you love is shot and killed when shopping or at one of those activities you enjoy. You want to move to a new house but can't afford to do so because housing has skyrocketed. Etc. We are all safe, until we aren't. Politics isn't just noise, it's what determines your safety and quality of life. And even if none of this ever impacts you or someone you love directly, it impacts the people in your community, your coworkers, the people in the places you travel and you should care about them, too.
My day to day life is generally not impacted by any of this either but that's all the more reason IMO that I need to care when it happens to others.
