Obviously my experience doesn’t speak for a whole country but we’ live in a very very deep red area. My son had a birthday party to go to and I had to stay. And I’m assuming every single person there except for me is a republican and voted for Trump. And not one single person talked about it. It was like life carried on as normal. And the party was very much parents sat around and chatted while kids played. I was surprised.
You were at a kid’s birthday party! I hope that parents were doing their best to carry on as normal. Whatever happen to “time and place”? 😳

I was at my son’s baseball tournament this weekend. A grandparent got the phone call about 10 minutes before it was it on here (yes I checked here immediately) and I only saw like 3 sites pop up with it and they weren’t “reliable”. He definitely felt the need to let everyone within 50 feet know Trump had been shot. At the time there was no other information.
Sunday, 3 siblings were under our tents and talking about who they want to win. They were 7, 8 and maybe 10. I only knew the 8 year old and he sad Trump because he got shot. The 7 year old said “yeah Biden sucks”. I just loudly stated “at” them “let’s not have kids talking politics at their brothers baseball game, ok?” Mom of 8 yr old says, “yeah, don’t say sucks”.
I’m glad it didn’t go further but I’m already worried for my kids when school starts. They were a lot younger and in a different (more politically diverse) school district in 2016 and 2020.
So a lot of discourse I’m seeing about this is….reasonable? I have a friend who started a discussion on FB today who has always voted Republican. She said it’s wonderful to see so many speak out against violence and that is why she won’t vote Trump again because she feels it starts with him. Not everyone agreed of course but the discourse has all been civil and way more agreed with her than I expected. I’m suddenly not as apprehensive about November. This will be interesting.
Conversely, I see white chicks coming out of the woodwork who i was sure would vote blue in November finally revealing they support Trump.
Yeah, when I read that he couldn't join the shooting team, but was wearing a pro-gun youtuber shirt... I wondered if the motivation was just plain old guns. "Look at me, you turned me away, and I shot someone famous."
I was also thinking along these lines. It's not the target that's the point. It's just guns guns guns and pathetic young white men feeling marginalized in a diverse world. That's why I said about I think it's more a culture thing from those assholes with such broad media platforms.
I got my NRA badge for being a sharpshooter at summer camp at age 13ish. That's pretty fucked up that I was so proud to be good at such a skill since I sucked at everything athletic. Why does this still exist?! Can they not give badges that I could transpose without sheet music?
They ARE giving more badges like this. I particularly love the bookbinding badge.

My kid is applying to colleges this summer. Yesterday we talked about how emigrating is easier if you go to school in the country into which you want to immigrate. I strongly advised adding some international universities to her application list so she has that option after November if accepted.
I also looked at her top school - if she gets into that program it is one of the most highly sought after in Europe, so she could possibly get sponsorship to come work in the UK or for other countries in this field because the U.S. has the best schools (so far) in that major.
I am in Texas and terrified of options for my womb-possessing LGBTQ kid in this state. We've been looking at other states, but if Trump is elected he plans to Texas-ize the rest of the nation.
It makes me feel panicky every time i think of it.
I think the shooter's motivation is important in that the Ds clearly do not need to self flagellate and post innumerable navel gazing exercises because he was not radicalized by us.

I’ve been ruminating more since this happened and I am struck by the fact that in the olden days, the country would have basically hit pause. It’s all we’d be talking about for days/weeks. But now a POTUS candidate and former POTUS gets shot and I’m like meh. Like, if this happened to GWB I would have been shocked and saddened and probably numb for a bit too. I don’t think unity with anything will happen in the rest of my lifetime.

The FBI has accessed 1 or 2 of his phones....parents had a Trump sign in yard previously....seemed friendly to neighbors & counselor said he had friends and wasn't bullied...
Cracking the phone did not crack the case, the people said. It offered some leads to pursue, but did not hold any immediate evidence of motive or what agents call “derogatory information” — clues to criminal plans or associates.
I'm just rambling now, but I'd like to discuss more about what to do, besides just vote. I'm doing that, but there has to be more. Right?
I haven’t read it yet, but there’s a brand new book out called Democracy in Retrograde that I’ve heard great things about and looks like it might help people figure out what they can do that fits within their resources, skills, and interests.

I’ve mentioned it before here, but I’m writing postcards for Postcards to Swing States
You do need to pay for the postcard stamps, but otherwise they provide the postcards, verbiage to write and addresses.
They don’t need to be mailed until October so there’s plenty of time still.
I’ve written over 800 so far over the last several months as it’s a stress reliever from my day to day job. You can select what swing state you want to write for or choose where they need the most writers (my preference).
Happy to discuss if you have any questions about the process.
Will it make a difference? Who knows, but it’s what I am choosing to do to try and help.
Edit: I also like postcardstovoters.org/ as they do a lot of postcard support for local races. Their Facebook page is the easiest to get up to date info on where they need support.

The guidance counselor is clueless. Multiple classmates said the shooter was bullied all the time. I'd trust the classmates words over the counselor.
I share the confusion expressed here... the media are calling it an "assassination attempt", but I don't know that we can say that for sure? It doesn't seem clear that he actually aimed at Trump rather than firing into the crowd indiscriminately. (Not that any of this matters to his base.)

no I think it was an attempt, but I think Trump's ear was hit with a piece of glass, not a bullet. and I think Trump is making it seem worse to make himself look tougher, as usual. that's all. as if surviving an attempt wasn't enough, you know?

I agree. From everything I’ve read previously about AR-15 injuries, getting “grazed” and it barely leaving a mark seems unlikely.
I think it’s rich that the media has asked Biden a LOT of very personal medical questions, especially recently, and demanded to know ALL THE FACTS…and no one seems to be asking for ANY kind of confirmation that it was, in fact, a bullet that struck his ear. I’m guessing it was glass, but due to HIPAA, he can forbid anyone who treated him from saying anything about it. I understand that, but I wish reporters would get it on record that Trump is refusing to release details.

I think his ear was hit was shrapnel. The FBI has said that Crooks had information about upcoming events for both Biden and Trump on his phone, raising the possibility that this may have been a crime of opportunity because it was only 50 miles from his house.
I also want to know why no one is asking any questions about his mental state after an assassination attempt? I can just imagine the journalistic hounding that would follow if this had been Biden instead. Why no information about the injury or how he's mentally feeling and recovering? It's such a blatant double standard.
I live in Texas. The state sucks ass. It's horrible here. I have voted in every single election I was eligible for (national, state, and local) since 1996. My vote really doesn't count in this state. Our electoral votes have gone to the Republican presidential candidate in every election since Jimmy Carter. I am a fighter in this state, but I'm tired and I'm worried about the future here. *sigh* I'm just rambling now, but I'd like to discuss more about what to do, besides just vote. I'm doing that, but there has to be more. Right?
I lived in TX during the 2016 election, so I know the feeling. The best thing you can do is encourage other people to vote, help them register, drive them to the polls (early voting if possible) because TX is a voter suppressed state. You have the population and record population growth mostly in urban counties to flip the state. Beto only lost to Cruz by 219k votes and to Abbott by less than 1 million, and they had a lot of negative press about Beto’s past. I have a lot of faith Colin Allred can beat Cruz! He’s a likable former pro football player campaigning like hell and while Cruz continues to desert you in disasters and literally has anti-Cruz groups devoted to voting him out of office. People are experiencing the consequences of the @abortion bans and speaking out. It’s not easy to go to a neighboring state. I know we always hear about unhappy Californians moving to TX, but being opposed to some far left politics is far from jumping on the MAGA train. I’d say the bigger reason is cost of living and a lot of liberals have relocated there for jobs.

Donald jr said half his ear was taken off the other night on CNN and another one of his cronies said the same thing. They are obviously full of shit.

So he'll either have to wear that stupid bandage for the rest of his fucking life or explain how his ear grew back at some point. Maybe this will be the first miracle in modern times!

Lolololol
Trump has “the most amazing medical team, the best, they’re remarkable, beautiful people, the most perfect medical team like you wouldn’t believe…nobody has ever seen anyone like them…it’s amazing stuff as to what they can do!”
….buuut no actual legit medical records will be released.

I was thinking about this last night as kind of a thought experiment. Hopefully this doesn't get me run off the board. If you've read anything about ethics, you've likely heard of the train scenario. A train is rumbling down the track and is going to run over five people. But if you throw the switch, the train will go a different direction and hit and kill one person, allowing the five to live. What would you do? And most people say they'd throw the switch. And then a different question will come up, like "What if that one person is your mom/child/partner?" I think most experts say there is no right answer, it's just a way to explore thought process and logic.
So in this case, Trump is the one guy. And all the people that will be hurt by his presidency are the five people. How many Muslims, members of the LGBTQ community, people of color, etc will be hurt and yes even killed due to the rhetoric and policies he puts in place? How many immigrants will suffer and many living in the margins will go hungry or not get healthcare? There's no way to put a number on that but I'd bet everything I have it's more than five. So is it really that unethical to wish Trump dead or at least incapacitated enough to not run? I'd have to give it more thought to come up with my own answer because I really am struggling with it, but I don't think that being ok with Trump's death necessarily makes one heartless or unethical.
I don’t think it’s unethical to wish death on somebody horrible or dangerous because it’s a wish. It’s a thought. You’re not doing anything wrong by wishing it.
Actually doing it is like asking, “Would it be wrong to go back in time and kill Hitler to save millions of lives??” And the answer is supposed to be “no, its not wrong to save millions of lives”. And then the follow up question is, “What about going back in time and killing Hitler AS A BABY? Is killing a baby wrong?” And you’re still supposed to say “no”.
The real answer is that time travel doesn’t exist and the holocaust would have happened anyway because the entire society was at fault for it happening, not just one person. Blaming one person is a cop out, a blunder, a smoke screen for admitting the real truth.
I'm pretty ok with wanting Trump's demise by natural causes. To the "go back in history" portion of the discussion, how about we make Reagan less successful in his acting career. Maybe sabotage a few of his films?
Ok douche, go ahead and call it mud. My husband DID have halitosis. We addressed it after I talked to you girls on here and guess what? Years later, no problem. Mofongo, you're a cunt. Eat shit. ~anonnamus
