I’m sitting in my school’s election prep meeting. According to our 503(3)c status as a non profit, I can’t engage in online activities that endorse a candidate….um…what does that mean, exactly? My private Facebook? Here?

You can in private as long as you do not use your affiliation with the non profit, or anything associated with the non profit (which can include internet access), to endorse a candidate. So log off while in the meeting, and come back here later.

Not a lawyer, but I *think* you can say/do whatever as long as you are clear that you are speaking personally and not connected to your school. So you can post as Er Bear, but not Er Bear, Teacher at Awesome School.

Does this include using my school computer at home to post on Facebook, for example?? Can the IRS tell that I am posting from my phone vs my computer? (I’m a tech idiot)

Strict interpretation: yes. Do not use government resources for any partisan campaign purposes. At all.
It's not just the IRS. This is a requirement of federal employees pursuant the Hatch Act. Most states have a state law equivalent for government employees in the state (including local government employees).

Technically yes re: home posting from the computer, since it's owned by the school. Phone usage could be tricky depending on if/how they track internet usage. In most scenarios no one is going to request those records, and no one cares.

It’s a private school if that matters
For me, my general rule of thumb is, "If someone gets mad enough at me to want to blow all my shit out of the water, and goes through my job, what will they find if they go through my public/work provided devices."
So if your school has a certain designation that has the stipulation that you must not participate in political activity, then what would they find on your work provided devices or internet logs?
Again, though, you can always weigh what the actual chances of someone wanting to wreck the school/your personal reputation would be and proceed from there.

So what’s tricky is this is a new directive. I teach in a Quaker school. It’s an extremely liberal place and we have always been encouraged to be involved in politics and social justice — it’s in the mission of the school. So this is a change and retroactive — the damage, so to speak, is done.

It does for the Hatch Act stuff.
It does not for the IRS stuff. When in doubt, use your personal devices only and speak/post only as yourself, not in your professional capacity.

Eh, my job is the same way. If I make a public political statement, it has to be 100% as an individual, and cannot be construed as me speaking for the Air Force or the Government, which means I can’t wear my uniform, I can’t use my rank, I can’t say “As an Air Force Officer…..”. Some people even go so far as to add a disclaimer that “My views are 100% my own and do not represent the Air Force.”

As for this, I stand by the belief that basic human dignity, justice, and treating all people with respect are NOT political subjects. Whether or not we should adopt the flat tax, or the limits of different branches of government, those are matters of political opinion. Whether or not all people deserve to feel safe, loved, and respected are matters of human dignity.

Totally and there’s no question that that is not up for debate. It was the posts on Fb supporting specifically a political candidate or talking shit about another (vs issues) that gave me pause.

You can still be "liberal" and discuss issues that are important but you just can’t in the capacity of your job specifically support/endorse or tell anyone else they need to endorse a specific candidate.
Obviously all the work I do is very "political" and it’s never stopped me from being clear on where I stand on issues in my professional roles and much of the work I do is with 501c3 outside of the work I do as an independent contractor. I just can’t say go vote for xyz.

That’s how I have always approached it. Today’s presentation just made me question that. Stupid lawyers

erbear, I teach in a very progressive Catholic school in a very progressive city. I have BLM / Love is Love / Science is real / Women's Rights = Human Rights signs IN my classroom. Our admin has not said anything about our SM accounts but I mean. There's no way you can come into my room and not understand that basic human dignity IS my agenda as a SS teacher and I'm unapologetic about that.
Like you though, our mission statement supports this.
I think it's fascinating that SS teachers (or all teachers I guess) are held to this standard of "no student should ever know who you are voting for" and well. That's not likely going to happen here. I'll encourage and facilitate discussions, of course -- but we won't be discussing "both sides" of any of the issues on my door.
Yesterday I saw a bunch of columns from right wing sources that said Kamala Harris has STOLEN another one of Trump's ideas and now wants to build the wall. When I looked for other sources to confirm, all I could find was additional right wing sources - Washington Examiner, Fox News, etc. Are any legitimate sources posting this? What are they referring to?

Eh- it's lacking some context. We have to have a wall of some sort....it's just a matter of it being the top/only priority vs. part of an entire program... it's part of the bipartisan bill that Trump torpedoed
Driving the news: In her speech to the Democratic National Convention last week, Harris said she would sign the recent bipartisan border security bill — which Trump had ordered his allies to kill, fearing it would help Democrats in the November elections.
That bill, negotiated by senators such as James Lankford (R-Okla.) and Chris Murphy (D-Conn.), requires hundreds of millions of dollars of unspent funds to be used to continue building a wall on the border.
"It requires the Trump border wall," Lankford told Axios. "It is in the bill itself that it sets the standards that were set during the Trump administration: Here's where it will be built. Here's how it has to be built, the height, the type, everything during the Trump construction."
Harris' campaign says the border deal is a whole lot more than continuation of wall funding — and a tiny fraction of what Trump has proposed.

A wall along a country's or other political subdivision's border is not a new or original idea. See, e.g., Hadrians Wall, the Great Wall of China, Jericho, etc.
That 45 and his ilk want to make it like "omg no one ever thought to put a wall there with US money" is laughable. There was an existing wall along the US/Mexico border when he took office, constructed during several past presidencies of both political sides.

This is how I am too. I mean, my classroom has a theme of resistance and rebellion!
You can look at my BLM sign, my pride flag, my "the future is female" poster and probably figure out pretty easily where I stand on voting. It was just an odd assembly -- I've been here 20 years and I have never heard this talk.

I thought she did a great job with the CNN interview yesterday and I definitely don't think they can say Dana was throwing her softballs (even though they will). She asked good questions.

I read a completely different opinion piece. Not that they were softballs but they were gop style questions that she deftly thwarted. Framing things like economic crisis when the facts show pretty incredible metrics.
The piece made the argument that this is why traditional interviews are increasingly worthless and why it was smart if her to go outside traditional media at dnc
