THE BIG MO’ — This morning, KAMALA HARRIS’ presidential effort announced that it raised a massive $310 million in July — two-thirds of which came from first-time donors — and has $377 million in cash on hand.
Where does all this money go?? It is absolutely insane that it costs that much to run for president. Why?
@@@@ Also, I do feel like this is such a stark punch in the gut re: abortion as funds and organizations are majorly struggling to stay afloat to help people while there’s hundreds of millions flooding in for the presidential campaign.
You should follow sharonsaysso on Instagram. She also has a newsletter on Substack called The Preamble. This is something she rants about often. Both Trump and Biden spent ONE BILLION dollars in their previous runs for president. It's absolute insanity. One of her recent articles is about the changes she would make to how our elections are run, including reducing the length and capping what can be spent.
Honestly, I'm really, really interested to see if Harris winning has any influence on the length of our election cycles. A win from her would prove you don't need election cycles to last an entire freaking year (and cost an absurd amount of money).

wanderingback. Mostly TV ads. But that has to be changing, right? The big advantage of big fundraising dollars is opening offices and staffing in so many places (especially swing states) so an infrastructure is in place before and after a candidate comes to town/gets their message out on a local level. Registering new voters, ballot initiatives, and (I think) support of other candidates and their campaigns.
“Disbursement of payments for day-to-day expenses, such as staff salaries, rent, travel, advertising, telephones, office supplies and equipment, fundraising, etc.”

TV ads must be seeing a fairly stark decrease in ROI. I'm middle aged and never watch them. The youts certainly don't. The most I'll see is something on youtube that I can skip after 5 seconds. Even my boomer dad doesn't watch them and never has. Even in the olden days he was very quick on the mute button.
2 years ago I kept getting fb ads for all over. Yes, it was influenced by my VPN, but it also included locations where I'd never routed through. For awhile I got ads from locations I'd visited last time I was in the states, but just because I drove through AL that does not make me a constituent.

The Biden/Harris campaign also announced that they just crossed the $1Billion fundraising mark for this campaign cycle. This is the earliest any campaign has crossed that threshold. So if she has $370M on hand, what exactly was the other 600 million spent on? Especially since the dems didn’t have to spend primary money. (The only thing I can imagine is that maybe they sent money down ballot for other dem primaries?)
Going back to the topic of Trump flags, not seeing as much, it's interesting bc where I live (in NJ) I feel like it has exploded. We usually are a blue state when it comes to elections, but I am very curious if we are "in the election" this year and can be flipped red. There is a huge amount of support for him and it's frankly gross.

My college roommate lives in rural Jersey and she’s in a deeply red area. Lots of Trumpers. I think most of Jersey remains pretty blue though. No one is talking about it being a swing state and the candidates haven’t been there much
"Hello babies. Welcome to Earth. It's hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It's round and wet and crowded. On the outside, babies, you've got a hundred years here. There's only one rule that I know of, babies-"God damn it, you've got to be kind.”

My cousins in Jersey (they live right over the bridge) have always been Republicans.
Votes for Trump is 2016. Not in 2020 because they blamed him for covid and my uncles death but I would be shocked if at least most of them don't vote for him this time. They have very short memories and hold a lot of racist beliefs.

That’s interesting. I’m in Jersey (northern end of Monmouth County) and thankfully seeing fewer supporters than in 2016 or 2020. But I always say that NJ is a very red blue state. We only go blue because of the cities.

I was a bad adult and sat out in 2016 because we are a blue state so I felt my vote didn't matter. (I know, I know.)
In the 2020 election, I felt like I was seeing too many Trump signs for my liking where I work so I looked up the demographics of the town. 50/50 Republican/Democrat. I had no idea! I had assumed the town would have been mostly blue. This scared me enough that I was motivated to fill out the mail in ballot and drop it off. I currently live in a town that leans blue but I know the neighborhoods in the town right next to me were very Trumpy in the past. Since my AC at home is broken, I was going to drive around there and another known Trumpy area nearby today to see what those neighborhoods look like this time.
I have since signed up for getting all future ballots mailed so I can easily participate in voting. Now I get why when we first got married, my husband's uncle shook his head in disappointment when we told him we were DINKs who didn't care about politics and were ambivalent about voting.
This morning in the supermarket I had a tee shirt on that said, Roe Roe Roe your vote. These 2 old women 80's is my guess, come up to me and whisper at me "we love your shirt, fight hard for rights" I asked if I could hug them and we shared a moment. I asked them if they needed a ride to vote, and they told me know they do mail in. It was such a good feeling.
I am at a music festival in Iowa, and have seen at least two women wearing these here. It's awesome!

I woke up to an ear worm from Katy Perry, only, the lyrics were "I'm black and I'm brown." There was more I wasn't able to recapture. My sleep self is far more creative than awake self. I think she'd be on board with reworking the lyrics.
That song might be old (not as old as donOLD), but it was the masterchef au intro for a very long time, so it's at least fresh in my mind.

I think this amount of money being wasted on elections is disgusting. I'm guessing a lot if it goes to setting up local offices and paying for local door knockers, boots on the ground people.
But also probably a lot of wasted $ on crap like eating out and events and advertising that doesn't actually work.

Sometimes to pay for the candidates legal defense…
I'm not actually salty that my donation from the original action call that was glitching went through 3x (if I was I'd just dispute 2 of them), but I'm not planning on donating again to the national campaign. I'm pretty sure they are doing just fine.

ActBlue has a breakdown of where the money goes when you donate through them, like when the "xyz for Harris" calls were going on. A chunk goes to the presidential candidate, the larger portion goes to the DNC which then parcels it out to the down ballot races. For Congress alone, there are 468 seats up for election - ballotpedia.org/United_States_Congress_elections,_2024
And then you have all the state and local elections that get a piece of the pie as well. So while the news is "The presidential campaign has all this money!" it's not actually true. At least not for the democrats.
I haven't really checked on where the Rs are spending the money, but up till now Trump has been keeping a lions share of the campaign money for himself. It's part of the reason they've stacked the RNC leadership.

Someone I know posted that video of Kamala talking about “the cloud” as evidence why she shouldn’t be president. I mean it’s not probably her finest moment, but she sounds like any person of a certain age trying to explain technology. If that’s the worst they have on her then I’ll take it. Do they really think eloquent Trump could do much better? I hate living in a red area.

Hopefully if they do debate the moderator will ask Trump to explain “the cloud” so we can compare the candidates on the topics that really matter 🙄
Vice President Kamala Harris is eyeing a broader path to victory than President Biden's 2024 map, with an army of enthused volunteers and piles of cash.
Why it matters: Harris' entry could put Georgia, Arizona, and North Carolina back in play, forcing Trump to spend in states he considered safe.
A new CBS poll shows Harris and Trump are tied across the collective battleground states, erasing Trump's previous lead over Biden.

Taylor Swift sort of hinted at a Harris endorsement in her Warsaw post on Instagram. It’s the seventh photo in and features her standing with her arm raised and a silhouette of what appears to be Harris waving in the background.

We were at the Olivia Rodrigo concert last night and she had voting registration and fundraising for abortion access. She has endorsed Kamala and it made me so happy to see.
Taylor Swift is dropping hints on her Social Media that she will be endorsing publicly soon, like a very Kamala looking silhouette behind her in a photoshopped image. Bon Iver performed at the Wisconsin rally today. Taylor once did a surprise appearance duet at a Bon Iver concert and they’ve collaborated on her work. 🪩
