If you have a head full of hair like T does or her friend does, dayum right you pretty much need to wear cornrows. I twist T's hair up because it is a monster to comb when left as a free flowing afro. Her friend has hair like this ...
Her mother keeps her hair in cornrows all the time.
I love that blog. I've tried quite a few of those styles on DD. DD has 3b hair that when pulled straight is below her butt. 3b is a little easier to manage than other hair types, but I still do braids sometimes as a protective style. If I detangle her hair and let her wear it down too much, she gets a lot of breakage.
Meh, if I really wanted my kid to go to this conservative school, I'd let her rock a TWA and go on with her bad self.
I didn't wear cornrows in primary school at all because my mother sucked at them. My go to style was 2 ponytails with a fat two strand twist in each. Or is that considered a braid?
Look, I suck at cornrows too. But, I keep my daughter's hair in a bunch of two strand twists like these:
These could still be considered braids. Or heck, could your ponytail plaits be considered braids? My point is that braids could be taken as twists, plaits, micro braids, box braids, etc. as a banned hairstyle according to this policy. All of which are standard protective styles for the majority of black kids.
And considering now there are studies indicating that there is a relationship between fibroids and chemical relaxers, I'm not going to do that to my kids for this type of policy.
Yeah, ummm, no...that's not the least bit accurate, hence this 6 page thread. Just bc you think the outfit is inappropriate or wouldnt let your 5 y/o wear "dangly" earrings doesn't make it so.
What's not accurate? That wearing a bathing suit to work might not be appropriate? Jeez, if my employer told me that it might hurt my FEELINGS.

Sparkle on the outside!
I don't know what's with me today, but I feel like posting pictures in response to everything. Maybe I should picture bomb F&B and ask for advice. Is it halloween yet?

well, if you were a SI swimsuit model, i'm guessing that's what they would prefer you to wear...but since we're talking about this particular outfit on this particular girl, i don't think that it being deemed inappropriate is a unity horse

Clearly not, since plenty of people buy those types of outfits for their kids. Otherwise, no one would make them.

This is how I did my eye shadow today. Is that wrong?
I would just assume any school that says "No braids" isn't the most culturally sensitive to begin with. I would never send my kid there as they haven't got a clue about the daily maintenance of natural black (not mixed, Black) hair.
If I was her teacher, I (or some other school personnal) would have rinsed it quick in the sink and combed it out. No big deal. And if it takes 10 mins, so what? Then I would have told the dad don't do it again. Wasn't worth making her miss picture day, dad would have seen anything like that was a waste of time, and everyone goes on with their lives.
After years in schools, I couldn't imagine leaving a child out on picture day because of their hair. Kinda heartless, if you ask me. And so the dad is a bit of an AW ::shrugs:: Most parents at some point become AWs with school stuff. He's a hairdresser so his came out here, another one is a chef and she takes the bake sale to a crazy place, etc... it happens, no biggie.
Third, people who see "sexy" kids' outfits everywhere are have something to share with the class, methinks. Kids aren't sexualized except for when perverts sexualize them.
This just isn't true. You don't have to be a pervert to think that a 8 year old dressed in a miniskirt, stiletto boots, a halter top and heavy makeup is being sexualized.
Sexualizing someone and finding someone sexy are two entirely different things. Sexualize means giving something or someone sexual associations. It doesn't mean wanting to have sex with them.
That said, I don't think this particular outfit counts as sexualized. Tacky, yes, sexualized, no.

I went to one of the most strict, religious schools I've ever heard of for a year, and this whole no-braids thing is a total novelty to me. I honestly had never heard it before.
"This prick is asking for someone here to bring him to task Somebody give me some dirt on this vacuous mass so we can at last unmask him I'll pull the trigger on it, someone load the gun and cock it While we were all watching, he got Washington in his pocket."
I don't care, AW. I think you're an awful person and I think you cloak it in religious fervor. And it disgusts me.
I've simply had enough and I can no longer explain away your asshattery.
You're gross and you're offensive and what's worse, not only do you not care, but you think you've been ordered by God to behave accordingly. Oh and you think anyone who disagrees is going against God. Yeah, that's awesome.
I agree with this also!
As do I. Remembering this for the next time someone interprets my any disagreement with or criticism of aw as irrefutable evidence of a personal vendetta on my part.

I'm assuming that it's not that the school is religiously conservative as much as it's some UK conservative dress standard. Don't most schools over there have uniforms and dress codes?

I rarely ever agree with you, but this is where I'm standing as well.
