As a swim instructor/aquatics director, I'd just be blunt in your question: hey, instructor person, is there a chance that we could sign up together as a couple for the 2x per week session and just split the classes? He comes Tuesday, I'll be here Thursday?
I've heard stuff like that before and it's not offensive. People try to save money where they can. And personally, as an aquatics director, the only issue I'd have with that is maybe liability: you know, if you sign up for the class but somehow he gets injured, the insurance companies will have a field day. But if there's a way around it and you were up front about it to the instructor, I'd tell you it was fine.

I diy'ed ours when we bought, so mine are 4.5 years old at this point. I used SW oil-based enamel paint and a tinted primer, and I've been happy with the finish, otherwise. Most of the scratches on them occurred right when we reinstalled the doors - R was not careful. And apparently I'm super lazy because I still haven't done that touch up. They are otherwise holding up well.
I've also painted the bathroom cabinets using just plain old duration in a semi-gloss and adhesion primer. Those are also holding up well.
I won't lie, listening to the rhythm of her stroke is really soothing.
I agree. It's perfect nap fodder. Every time the kayaker talks, I'm like "shhhhhhhh." And then I realize I sound crazy. And then I'm glad I'm the only person here. LOL

Susie - they have a weather contingency plan, if I recall correctly, and they're prepared to swim through *most* weather conditions (including lightning, which gives me a little anxiety, but whatever).
At least at the moment, the water is really really calm, which is great. Champlain can be a bit of a monster when it comes to chop.
This is an interesting topic. Most marathon swimmers will negate literally all of the top 10 swims (including Diana Nyad's swim from Cuba to Florida) except Sarah's. Interesting! I didn't know there was so much controversy over Diana Nyad. So this 104 mile legit marathon swim attempt is kind of unprecedented then? I'm even more impressed.
Yes, unprecedented because Nyad (nor any of the others in the commonly listed top 10, I don't think, with the exception of maybe Jamie Patrick and Chloe McCardel) did not follow marathon swimming rules. (Here's a fact check on Nyad's various claims over the years: www.nyadfactcheck.com/)
I *think* Sarah's swim in Lake Powell is still the longest by time, although I'm not sure. Various people will give different data.
She did the length of Lake Powell last year - 80-ish miles. And apparently (ETA: I wasn't there, but Suzie was and she said) got out of the water looking pretty much like she did when she got in. This is completely mind-boggling to me too, for the record.
Yeah I just read an article about her 82 mile swim last year. They said she was jumping up and down when she got to the dock. I just . I don't know man.
But the article said that her 82 mile swim got her into the top 10 longest marathon swims by time, and I checked the list - if she does this swim in 72 hours like she wants, she'll get into the top 5! That's unbelievable.

Related to this - what do you do to keep your shoulders healthy/happy when you're swimming this far, or marathon distance? Throw some backstroke in there every few miles? Or is it just conditioning just like anything else? I am relating it in my mind to a walk break or coming out of aero.
Personally? Massage and stretching and a lot of work on form. It's a conditioning issue for me.
Some swimmers will change up their stroke occasionally - breaststroke, back, or even fly - but I just power on in freestyle because that's how I train. 100% free all the time.
I don't really know what to say about that. Like - is that possible? Is that a thing that the human body can do? You marathon swimmers ... I bow down to you guys. You are the nuttiest nuts in the bunch. And I love every bit of it.

I'm trying to calculate in my head what the running equivalent of that would be? The cycling?! As soon as I finish my first cup of coffee maybe I can wrap my brain around it.
Swimming's "marathon" equivalent is the 10k. It's an "ish" equivalent, but it'll do for this purpose.
So (104/6.2)*26.2 = 439.48 running-equivalent miles
Presuming a century is the cycling equivalent of a marathon: (104/6.2)*100 = 1677.42 cycling-equivalent miles

Congrats!!! I'm so impressed! And I know a few 50 mile races here in California that come with free room and board and an experienced race crew person when you're ready to go again.
LLbean will replace for free so I'd at least do that
I know they will, but I feel weird about that. The bag is from 1998. I've gotten more than my $75 worth of use out of it - 4 years of college and a whole lot of travel since. This is one of those circumstances that even though their warranty covers it, I don't feel right about using the warranty because the bag has aged very well and is 19 years old at this point. This is normal wear and tear, KWIM?

My beloved old-faithful LLBean backpack is starting to tear at one of the strap attachments. I'd like to replace it with another backpack, as I typically use it in conjunction with my (Euro-friendly) roller bag to double my carry-on capacity.
I've considered replacing with another Bean bag, but I'm wondering if there are any better options. Requirements: water bottle pouch, laptop sleeve, external pocket (s) big enough to hold a hardback book, well-padded straps, fits under a plane seat, and water-resistant material. I'd like to stay under $100, but I'm open to a higher price point if the bag warrants it.

In general, since I know that I'm the only crazy-distance swimmer here.
I'll say it out loud: I'm training for a 36-mile swim next June. My longest swim to date was about 10 miles. So this is the equivalent of going from a marathon to a 100k-ish. Or, more accurately, a 75 miler, if that's a thing.
Here's my question: how do I do long swims? I mean, no one running a 100k is heading out for 50 mile runs, right? Do I do three 10-mile swims in a row on three consecutive days? One 18-miler? Anyone have a (free/easily accessible) ultra-run training plan or two to share with me?

I'm exhausted and even though I sleep really well, I look it. The bags under my eyes are going to need their own zip code soon. No idea what's going on, but man, I'm done with feeling like this.
Also, it's going to be over 100 for 10 days. Eff that. I have to freaking get up at 5am to take the dog for a walk before it gets too hot.
