I started working on my training plan for END-WET and nearly had a panic attack. I had to stop. So far I've been working backwards from race day and when I hit the big-mileage week I nearly threw up.
This is an MM-flameful, but we are refinancing our home and rolling some CC debt into the refi. Our payment will stay about the same (because we're getting into a better loan), but we will no longer be paying out huge chunks of money for our massive mistakes when we were younger. (We've been paying down debt for 5+ years now.) I'm irritated though, because the loan won't get funded till Friday and one of my CC payments is due on the 20th, which is giving me anxiety that I'm going to take a late fee or something, because they're going to mail checks instead of paying electronically. I realize this is irrelevant because I have good credit which is only going to get better without non-mortgage debt, but nonetheless, massive anxiety.

I'm no longer a runner, but I wear merrell minimalist shoes for anything where I have to stand or be standingly-active (if that makes sense). When I ran, and now if I'm doing a lot of walking, I wear Mizunos, but for things like volunteering where I'll be standing up for long periods of time, the merrells are a much better choice. I find that minimalist shoes cause significantly less pain in my feet, no matter what surface I'm standing on. I've done 10-hour volunteering mega-shifts with no problems in the Merrells, but the one time I wore Mizunos, I had to take them off halfway through a 6 hour shift. They're great for forward momentum for me (which indicates to me that my stride is probably wonky and that's why I kept hurting myself running), but not so much for just regular foot support.
I have wide, fat feet with high arches and I'm most comfortable in Converse, flip-flops, or the merrells with no significant support or drop.

I am a regular donor. I have found that I really need to time my donations with my menstrual cycle, if I can. If I'm in the first 10-15 days of my cycle, it takes me a lot longer to recover than if I'm in the second half of the cycle.
Also, I eat red meat/spinach/dark greens/etc and take iron supplements for the three days before and after I donate. Plus, extra water for the three days before and less caffeine for that same time period.
I'm curious as to those who keep their bag at home/in the garage, etc. What happens if you can't get home? Curious as to why it's not in your car.
It's possible. We keep our bag with the pets' stuff because if there's any possible way to get them, I'll do it. (Usually the firefighters will let people in to get their pets if they can, and the bag would just be an incidental grab.)
If we can't get home at all in a wildfire situation, all is lost, including our pets. I prefer not to think about that possibility, but if it happens, we'll just buy what we need and deal with the losses. Stuff is replaceable, even irreplaceable stuff. The pets would be the real loss there.

I live in a wildfire zone. We have a bag and a list. The bag is with the cat carriers and is our "evacuate now" bag - irreplaceable stuff and a day's worth of clothes and food. The list is sorted by priority, so basically, once the bag and pets are in the car, we'll just load stuff up into the car (s) in the order of the list until we run out of time. That's stuff like our camping gear (so we have a place to stay), irreplaceable furniture pieces, the computers, and other family pieces we'd like to hang on to if possible.

I'm busily searching for "warm-up" marathon swims in April or May of next year. So far, everything is in April, and of the two I'd consider, one is back-to-back, but it's an application swim and hard to get into, and the other is 24 miles in Tampa Bay. I'm really not sure which of those is a worse option, lol.

Correct. Also, marathon swimmers generally try to down their feeds in under a minute, so really however many times she stopped, it usually wasn't very long unless it was a "maintenance" stop - reapplying desitin or switching goggles or de-suiting or something like that. (Yes, a lot of marathon swimmers will ditch at least part of the swimsuit b/c chafing is a very real issue.) She would tread water or float while feeding.
Yes, this is a real record. The longest (both in time and distance) unassisted marathon swim in history.

If I'm having pre-race anxiety, it's always related to the course. Before the GCBS, I dreamed that I was swimming along between two bridges (not the chesapeake bay ones, just two random bridges) and all of a sudden I took a breath and they were gone. I was like, swimming around in open ocean with no safety boats, no land in sight ...
Before Kingdom Swim, I dreamed that R got lost on the course and we were just going around in circles. I woke up so freaking mad at him, lol.

And she's done! 67 hours, 16 minutes, 12 seconds. 105.38 miles. There will be video (decent video considering it's nearly 4am there) on her Facebook page if you missed it. What an amazing human being.

I'm not sleeping until she can.
You know what's really got me going? That her speed OVERALL for 100+ miles is 1.5+ mph. That's just a little slower than my cruising speed, but I start slowing down at about 8 miles. I can't imagine keeping up that speed for that long, especially against chop and headwinds and who knows what.
Also, I'm using this as inspiration for my swim for next year. Apparently a general training recommendation for marathon swimming is to do the same in km over a week that you would compete in a day - for several months. So that equals 58k a week. For months. Oooooof.

UPDATE: 10 miles to go! She's apparently been substantially slowed by a pretty strong headwind (which is probably the absolute last thing she wanted right now) but she's still feeling good and is determined to finish!

And even the big-name/syndicated folks can make substantially less than other similarly high-profile/public facing careers like tv personalities, actors, etc... it's part of the reason I chose not to pursue radio after I left college. A morning show host in syndication or in a major market *might* pull down six figures, but it's unlikely to be such a high six-figures, unless he has pictures of the station owner with a goat, KWIM? At the time of the groping, Entercom owned KYGO and a quick review of how their salaries range on Glassdoor indicates to me that they're paying at or slightly below market average. So I'm calling BS on his stupid damages claim.

I am totally awestruck. She is still going. I watched her stroke for like 15 solid minutes and just got a sense of the rhythm and cadence and it was incredible. Like a metronome. I thought about that rhythm and cadence as I did a long steady set swim yesterday and had my best pace so far for that steady state swimming.
mrs.jacinthe, I wanted to ask why it seems like women do so well in marathon swimming? More than other sports, it really seems like women dominate. Is there a reason for that?
Personally, I think it's a combination of body fat and psychology. Generally, I think women are more mentally conditioned for long stretches of boredom or repetitive activity than men due to the nature of "women's work" through history. We can turn off our mind from what we're doing and focus on other things, which makes crap like this less tedious.
The good news is that they're coming from behind. *MUCH* better than taking chop like that from the front, but it can be killer on the low back (because it keeps lifting your feet up while the rest of your body is flat).
We have just about reached the limit of chop to which I'd subject myself, but I know Sarah's made of tougher stuff. LOL
I think you're made of some pretty tough stuff too. Just looking at it is making me seasick.
Is there anything she can do to minimize/cope with the lower back stuff? I thought it was interesting yesterday that she would backstroke for a bit after feeds to warm her front.
I'm rambling now.
She's probably popping ibuprofen at some feeds. Other than that, there's really not a ton you can do. Just keep plowing along.

08/09 Morning Update: wind. Lots of it. The lake is kicking up some chop but Sarah's still making good progress. She's at mile 80 right now and still looking strong. Only 24 more to go!! I'm hoping for a calming of the winds so she can finish while there is still daylight, but at her current pace, she's got about 13.5 more hours of swimming to go. So it's likely she'll finish in the dark.
