No disrespect, but you are pretty much the last person who should be saying this.
Actually I wouldnt recommend this to a Canadian because we have commonlaw partnerships and you are protected. I was just thinking if she and this person broke up, she has less protection like she would as a spouse. (Signed, no idea about laws on divorce in the US or commonlaw unions, etc)
and no disrespect because it took us 12 yrs to decide to get married. I am the complete opposite of this relationship.
This isn't the first time you've commented about American laws without knowing jack about them.
Not sure if you're still looking at this post rikki, but as an occasional responder of posts (and originally from WI- not that it really matters), I wanted to say congrats to you on your pregnancy and in finding someone that makes you happy. At the end of the day, that's the best you could hope for and I know most ppl here want you to be happy. Good luck, and I hope you somehow are able to keep updating us with life updates though I dont blame you if you dont. I really do wish you the best!

Your advice is awful.

I was just looking at the situation a different way. I admitted that I didnt know the laws, but I am pretty sure people in here have mentioned that common law in the US is not the same as Canada. Here, if you lived together for a certain period of time, a breakup would be like a divorce (can sue for alimony, split assets from the marriage, etc) however, I thought in the US, common law took longer to establish. Again, just pointing out another thing to think about.
