Why wow? Its true isn't it? If you make the majority of your income from tips, you can't control how much you will be tipped. Its the shitty reality of being in a tip heavy field. Most people's bodies can't continue to give awesome massages for years and years. And if they only make 20k doing that (without tips) they are going to be living on the poverty line. It sucks for them which is why I said I wished there was a higher flat fee to avoid the dependance on tips.
I think you need to reword it to perhaps say " any labor intensive job carries a big risk". Living off of tips or not, if it becomes such a hardship for you to do your job well you can be let go/fired. That has nothing to do with living off of tips.
I agree, but I was using the massage therapist as an example because it was mentioned and we are talking about tips.
Am I sounding like an asshole? Ugh. I'm not meaning to be. I'm trying to say people should be paid a fair wage. I'll shut up and try to think of a real unpopular opinion
I once was on a vacation in FL that my mom got me. It was part of some package and the meals were included (except the tip). Which they graciously added on for you at 18%. Which is exactly what the bartender/waitress deserved after I waited 30 minutes to order when I was starving. She's lucky I didn't jump the bar and start screaming. I get insane when I'm hungry. Look at me! Take my order! But they didn't care because everyone there was part of that weird package and they were guaranteed 18%. Stupid.

Like anyone else in any other field- be good at what you do. I can't speak for those in the esthetician/beauty industry, but I've known lots of food industry veterans who are wonderful at their job. They are employees at top-notch companies where they know they will always have plenty of business. They are smart with their money. They contribute to 401ks. They take classes during the days (since they're off) and hone other skills. Many establishments offer their employees retirement packages and health insurance.

Lol we did get a LOT of baked goods too, Tamb. A ridiculous amount. But we got some good stuff too, I know it really helped my parents have a nicer Christmas for us because of all the generous people who gave money when they weren't supposed to. And a happier Christmas for my parents with the wine! Haha
What about the food places where you order at a counter, and then pick up your own food? When you pay with a card, and the receipt prints out with the tip line. I always feel guilty if I don't tip, but really, I wasn't served. How do most handle that?
I think perfume is gross and people should stop wearing it until they learn how to not bathe in it. Soap and water people, soap and water - it is really all you need. I should not be able to smell you coming down the hall (nor should my sinuses).
I hate when my kids smell like someones cologne or perfume because that person was holding them/playing with them. I want them to smell like baby/toddler!
I have an obsessive and irrational love of sports. All sports, but especially baseball. I'm an encyclopedia of stats, and I can put most men to shame. I get inexplicable joy when Matt and go somewhere and he tells another guy this, and the guy asks me what he thinks is an impossible question, and I answer perfectly. Take that, jerk, I read comic books, played hockey, and watched ESPN when I was little, screw your misogyny.
And we're tremendous over tippers. Its a hard job that I feel is undervalued, so we usually tip between 20 to 30%. I tip my mailman at Christmas too, even if it's a nice bottle of wine or a gift card for coffee. My dad has been a mailman for 30 years, and he made shit money, but walked and carried mail for all day route, 6 days a week for 20 of those years. People were so kind to him at Christmas, so I remembered that and continue it.
God, I'm a bleeding heart, you guys.
Us too. I remember my Grandmother doing it and it just kindof stuck w/me. Newspaper delivery people as well...although we haven't had one of those in years. Last year I tipped our mailman more because of the amount of mail/packages we had due to Mia's birth and my addiction to internet shopping
Mine is that I hate when people make general statements like, "this is what's wrong with the board these days!" It makes the person sound like an old fogie.

Speaking of Old Fogie......
Has anyone seen Spring Breakers? The movie not people going on Spring break. I felt 100 years old after watching it with all the drugs, threesomes, partying and arresting. It was terrible.

Im sorry but if you suck as a server then you arent getting a good tip, period. Why should you get a reward for sucking? I dont get rewarded at my job when I'm not at my best.
We tip really well and dont ask for much. You have to at least get us our drinks fairly quickly, make eye contact and come to check on us a few times. If the kitchen is backed up, and things are slow... LET US KNOW. Communication is key. Easy peasy.
As a 20 year old, I made $250-300/day as a server in a tourist restaurant in the summer, it dropped down to $30/day in the winter when coupons for locals to BOGO came out. It was family style and the meal was $18. The locals had me running my ass off way more than the tourists and thought they were doing me a favor by tipping a $1 for 6 people. Jerks! I prided myself on being the best server I could be and I was compensated for that with tips. It never mattered what type of customer I had. And yes, at this restaurant people wanted lots of small talk.
And for milking things: I was hit head on by a tourist passing a horse and buggy 6 days after my 22nd birthday. I had to go back to work the day after I was released from the hospital because there was no PTO and bills were mounting. My face was all bruised from the airbag, arm in a sling, sad looking thing pushing a cart to carry food. I worked half a day, maybe had $450 in sales...I made $225 in tips that day after I tipped my busser. My tips were fantastic until PT pulled me from serving, then it was $7/hr as a damn hostess for 3.5 months. That sucked major ass.
Moral of the story:
KKFeb04 tips 30% of what the meals should cost (i.e. if kids eat free, I'm still tipping on the $12 that I saved) for exceptional service, which includes bringing the kids meals out. KKFeb04 tips 20% for okay service, KKFeb04 tips 15% for terrible service, why...because I have bad days too.
In general this area, locals can be the worst tippers. I have had friends (even in their 30's) that didn't realize you are supposed to tip the servers. I also tip for my takeout....always.

Back when I was young probie we...
Ate moldy yogurt without complaining about pesky expiration dates, charlielove! Lol
Sports: Hockey all the way. Love all the hockey fans on the board! I grew up traveling the country watching my brother play. As a snotty teenager I hated it, but now it's pretty awesome that I got to travel so many places because of it. And by so many places I mean mostly Canada
My H is a huge sports guy. I admit I have been listening to sports radio on the drive home lately. I don't want him to find out though because I have said it's boring in the past. I am excited for football and hockey to start up again. I like college basketball too, but you can't pay me to watch NBA or baseball. I hate the NBA. It seems so fake to me.
Tipping: Serving/bartending was my college job. I am generous when we go out to eat if I get great service. Other services I do 10%. But this doesn't apply to me much since I get my hair cut/colored for free and have only had two mani/pedi's in my life. Never had a massage.
My UO which may be more of a confession, I hate having people stay at our house. I don't want house guests.

Because of something you posted last year, I got our mailman a nice card, a Starbucks gift card AND a bottle of wine this past Christmas. I feel awful that it had never occurred to me to do that before.
(I also sincerely hope it makes up for the fact that, despite having the same mailman for three years, my dogs still go apeshit every.single.time he comes to the door)
creamsiclechica I feel the same about H's pride in me and loving sports and beer I am such a guys girl and I am okay with that. I like having something to talk with my male co-workers and male friends about. I also love beer.

I love this, and I love you. It's so sweet! My dogs do too, lol. Apparently mailman equals nuclear threat to dogs.
I know, kkfeb04, it's gone shockingly fast! I feel very third tri though haha. Thanks, sweetie! (Heart)
I'm fairly certain that this is the entire west coast, but servers make minimum wage and these three states have some of the highest minimum wages in the country. Minimum wage still isn't a living wage, though, and they'll never make more than minimum wage no matter how hard they work or where they work, so we tip 20%. If you do a shitty job, you'll get less than 20%, but generally we tip 20. There's a place I go on occasion and my whole order is 8.75, so I'll tip $3, because that's what would be a fair tip for the same meal anywhere else. I've been a server and I don't want their job ever again.
I am not a fan of Friday weddings. I understand why people choose as they save money, but ugh. We were invited to one this October and the ceremony begins at 4:30pm.....so not convenient for most people and it's far from many of us. Plus, DH and I have the exta added headache of dealing with child care for the kiddos, which is tougher on a Friday afternoon as most of our sitters work.
Re: Mailmen: I love our maillady! She's awesome! We totally notice when it's someone different. Every time she drives by, she throws out a treat for Anna. This makes her Anna's most favorite person ever. She rarely barks for the maillady, and when she has to come up to the house with a package, Anna is all over her for love. I totally credit her with a huge chunk of Anna's friendliness towards people coming to the house since Anatolians are (in general) very territorial and leery of non-family in their turf.
Re: Tipping: Long live a fair living wage! I never had problems with being stiffed on the check when I waited tables. I think the least tip I ever got was like 12%. Eh, no biggie. I didn't mind the customers, but hated some of my coworkers, and they're ultimately why I left. I hate dining with bad tippers. My BFF is a 10-15% tipper, always, and is very picky about her service and bitchy if you don't do it right. I always wind up tipping an extra 5% because of her. It also bother's me when people don't tip on to-go orders (like from Chile's, Macaroni Grill, Uno's type restaurants) because the people working to-go are also paid under minimum wage and rely on your tips. I always tip 10% for to-go at those type restaurants. (As a server I made $2/hr, at to-go I made $6, thus a smaller % for to-go.) It bothers me when people say they don't need to tip to-go. But it also depends on the restaurant as to how much the to-go person is being paid.
