I use a lot of coupons and groupons for restaurants. I really appreciated one recently that listed suggested tips at the bottom and noted that the suggested tips for 15, 18, and 20% were before the groupon. Thank you for doing the math for me! I had been drinking and I can't be trusted to do proper math while intoxicated.
I am not a fan of Friday weddings. I understand why people choose as they save money, but ugh. We were invited to one this October and the ceremony begins at 4:30pm.....so not convenient for most people and it's far from many of us. Plus, DH and I have the exta added headache of dealing with child care for the kiddos, which is tougher on a Friday afternoon as most of our sitters work.
I had a Friday evening wedding. We didn't have much of a choice, though, because we got married at the end of spring break and half of our wedding party needed time to get back to school--it's a 24 hour drive from my hometown to our college.
Re: Mailmen: I love our maillady! She's awesome! We totally notice when it's someone different. Every time she drives by, she throws out a treat for Anna. This makes her Anna's most favorite person ever. She rarely barks for the maillady, and when she has to come up to the house with a package, Anna is all over her for love. I totally credit her with a huge chunk of Anna's friendliness towards people coming to the house since Anatolians are (in general) very territorial and leery of non-family in their turf.
Re: Tipping: Long live a fair living wage! I never had problems with being stiffed on the check when I waited tables. I think the least tip I ever got was like 12%. Eh, no biggie. I didn't mind the customers, but hated some of my coworkers, and they're ultimately why I left. I hate dining with bad tippers. My BFF is a 10-15% tipper, always, and is very picky about her service and bitchy if you don't do it right. I always wind up tipping an extra 5% because of her. It also bother's me when people don't tip on to-go orders (like from Chile's, Macaroni Grill, Uno's type restaurants) because the people working to-go are also paid under minimum wage and rely on your tips. I always tip 10% for to-go at those type restaurants. (As a server I made $2/hr, at to-go I made $6, thus a smaller % for to-go.) It bothers me when people say they don't need to tip to-go. But it also depends on the restaurant as to how much the to-go person is being paid.
I get a lot of curbside to go because I have a lot of chain restaurants close by. I usually tip the people that hand me my food. However, I want to know what service these people are providing, aside from handing me a bag of food. I pay online most of the time. What are they doing that actually warrants them deserving a tip for their service?
I don't mean to sound snarky, I just want to know.
I'm in a foul mood today. Some dumb tattle tale 5.5 year old in Kalvin's class said "Eww...why do you have pull ups Kalvin." I barked back to him that "he's younger than you and he's learning how to potty. You don't have to be mean. You were in pullups once too." It doesn't help that I think this kid is a tattle tale as he tried to get Kalvin in trouble on Tuesday at pick up claiming Kalvin dumped a bucket of mulch on his hair. I saw it, it didn't touch the kid who was crawling underneath where Kalvin was playing and there was no mulch in his bowl cut hair.
My UO: 5 year olds should not be in the same class with 3 year olds.

Oh, let me blow your minds. In German restaurants, you only round up to the next euro. Like if it's €20.70, you give €21. We usually give two or three euros, though. If it was super good service, we give €5.
I am enjoying all of the hockey love! Less than 2 months until opening night. Hockey was Tyler's first word after Dada and Puck. Faevantastic should come down here to a hockey game with me.
That would be cool! Is Tyler going to be a future hockey player? DH and I are totally going to put Evan in a program as soon as he's age appropriate.

They still have to gather all the items for your order together and still deliver it to you. I think the convenience of you not stepping foot out of your car is tip worthy.
Remember tipping isn't just for the server because the servers have to tip the bussers, etc....
Even if we didn't have a scheduled busser on during the winter we still had to give 20% of our tips to the "busser" who wasn't there. Oh and we did have a terrible busser too. I really didn't want to give her 20%, maybe 10% because she was always late and I would bus my own tables but it was a requirement to give 20%.

Maybe! H does skate, but I do, and I plan to start teaching him next year. He runs around the house with his mini hockey stick.

They're in charge of putting your food together and making sure the order is correct. Sometimes they have 5 or more orders going all at once and it gets hectic. I worked at Macaroni Grill, and I had to make sure all the food was correct and assembled (including any special requests), silverware, salt, pepper, oil, cheese, and bread were all in the bag. Take payments and phone orders. I got maybe two tips a night. I certanly don't think that they deserve 15%. Even 10% may be excessive. But they're still not making minimum wage and they do make sure you get the correct order.

Ok, as long as people don't think these people should also get 20%. If it is just for H and I, I tip $2 if I go in to get my food. I give $3 if they bring it to the car (sometimes $4 if the weather is terrible).
We have a living wage in Santa Fe, so even the lowest paid employee gets a minimum of $10.50 an hour, with the exception of state and federal government employees. Once my BIL is retired (he's the mayor) several candidates want to repeal it.
I really don't feel too bad for wait staff here. My dad just did a bankruptcy for a couple that are both waiters, the work at different restaurants and together bring home over $140,000 a year. I would say the average plate at the restaurants they work at is $12, but with one margarita it quickly goes to $20. I know they work hard but so do I and I don't get tips and have to buy a lot of my own teacher supplies. On top of that if I worked full time I would be making $45,000 a year with Bachlors degree, and $60,000 a year with a masters. Not even close to what the are making in a depressed economy.
That is awful. I am sorry. Why do they have 3 and 5 year olds together? Socially and emotionally that is a huge difference. I could see maybe out on the playground a little but in the same CLASS!?!

Adam's room is technically 2.9-5yrs. He is almost 5 and it KILLS me that so many immature 3 year olds have just been moved up. Luckily he will be moving to pre-k in 3 weeks but ugh...

I can't believe your dad tells you about his cases.

There aren't many 5 year olds in his class, just a few. I think it is because the district says you have to be 5 before August 31st to start kindergarten so those kids then are left in the preschool room until they can start kindergarten. They really should have a separate 3 year old room and then a 4-5 year old room.

OK, my husband works in the credit card processing industry and I had to ask him about this. I am c&p the email exchange because I am laughing so hard:
VS: How would a gynecologist’s office get a tip line on their cc receipts for patients? (lol, long story)
MrVS: Is this a joke? Who leaves a tip when they visit the gyno? Is this a new trend?
VS: No! I mean, would they have had to specifically request it? Or could it be like a second hand machine that had it built in? It is so weird, I am trying to figure out if there is any way it could be an accident.
MrVS: They would have had to specifically request tip line when they got set up initially. No accident. Tip Line at a medical office is far from the norm and a little weird. Not possible with second hand machine as the old programming would be erased.
The fact that they purposefully added the tip line makes this SO much more funny!!!!!
I have no idea what you guys are talking about when you mention people making 2-3 dollars per hour not including tips. Everyone here makes min. wage, then gets tips on top of that. Min. wage is 8.25 or 8.50 here.
My UO's are:
I hate when people take family photos with their dogs. Mainly because I couldn't do that with my cats. I also think you are dumb if you compare the hardships of taking care of your dog to the work it takes to take care of a baby. They are not, and will not, ever be the same.
I think nails should only be painted in nude/orange/red/pink/purple tones. Green, blue, yellow, etc, does not belong on your nails.
I think everyone should only be allowed to post up to 3 facebook statuses per week. No one has that many important or interesting things to say. No one is an exception.

Servers minimum wage in PA is $2.83/hr and has been for at least a decade and a half. If you didn't earn enough tips averaged out of the week you got the min wage. Min wage is only $7.25. Definitely more than half below the poverty line if someone worked 40 hours every week.

My dog has been in every family photo since we adopted him. Why shouldn't he be? His is a member of our family.
I guess some people could lie and say they only made $50 instead of $200 but you wouldn't stay hired if you made a quarter of what everyone else made.
And yes, my employer submitted it as my income.
So you have to report to the employer how much tips you've made and they include in your W-2?
I haven't been a server in over 10 years but yep. It was reported nightly. I was the one to record it in the system as a lead server. Most people did charge the tip so there's that too. Like I said, there are probably some that don't record their tips. It did not happen at this place I worked because if everyone is making $200+ and someone tried to say they made $50 (if your sales were just as high as everyone else's)...you were taken to the office and had to empty out your apron and count in front of the supervisors. Our uniform pants had no pockets. Either way, if they only claimed that much but made more or only made that much, they weren't a server there anymore.
And really the hourly wage of $2.83/hr was really for taxes. The place I worked also made you do at least one day per pay period of hostessing/bussing just to pay for taxes.
