I'm thinking that maybe servers may prefer tips over getting reg wage because tips are not subject to income tax?
Umm...my tips were subject to income tax.
I guess some people could lie and say they only made $50 instead of $200 but you wouldn't stay hired if you made a quarter of what everyone else made.
And yes, my employer submitted it as my income.
I didn't know some places did that. Back in my waitressing days, I thought the tax was taken based on an approximation of expected income. So basically my whole check of my $2 an hour. My employer didn't ask how much we made, and goodness knows by the time I did my taxes I had no clue how much I had made to report. (Shhhh don't tell uncle sam!)
I hate when people take family photos with their dogs. Mainly because I couldn't do that with my cats. I also think you are dumb if you compare the hardships of taking care of your dog to the work it takes to take care of a baby. They are not, and will not, ever be the same.

Yeah, I'm guessing this happens frequently unless if there is law that mandates reporting tips to employer so they could put it on record. It's like most people don't report online purchases to the state to pay state tax even though you're suppose to technically.

Isn't there a tips earned box though on the tax return or is that not for servers?

i thought it was a federal law that employers had to take out taxes based on what was the estimated norm or report your tips every day. I guess it is a state law.

This was 10 years ago, so I can't remember. :-)
Ha! A lot can change in 10 years! I made tips working at a bakery but it was not a lot. I mean, probably a dollar or less for every hour worked, sometimes not at all. It was split over the people who worked that day but when we closed we had to put tips earned into the system even. I can't imagine NOT reporting as a server given we did so even with pennies!
I watch Giuliana and Bill (shut up) and it grates my last nerve when they constantly call their son Duke, "the baby". For some reason it annoys me when the child is here and has a name, why not just use their name?
I love my dog way more than I love my cat. Is this a UO or a confession? I feel like ozzy is another person, he is a family member. The cat is cool, he can be really annoying but in general I like him. But I just don't LOVE him the way I love ozzy.
I feel we'd go bankrupt paying medical bills for ozzy but if something happened to the cat we probably wouldn't spend all our savings, saving him. Is this terrible?

Do you have pet insurance? We got it to ease some of the stress of big bills when she is older or if she gets sick Our deductible is met after her two bi-annual exams and meds. It has paid for itself the last 2 years that we've had it. (we had a couple of emergency vet visits due to Lola's tendency to eat whole pork loins wrapped in butcher's twine)

We do not. I looked into it a couple of times and it seems so expensive?
For example, say I want a $50 deductible, and 100% reimbursement I must pay $200 per MONTH for him?
Say I want a $200 deductible and only 80% reimbursement I must still pay $80 per month?
It just seems like a lot. I guess as he gets older it might make more sense? When he was just a baby, we'd had him only a few weeks, he got sick and we had to pay over 2 grand to the animal hospital.
Recently He was sick/ had swallowed a corn husk and I had to bring him to the vet where they xrayed him and checked him out. As I was sitting in the wait room I was kicking myself for not having insurance. BUT then when he was fine and I only had to pay $120 for the checkup and xray I was then glad we hadn't been shelling out 100+ every month for insurance. It's a hard call to make
I should look into the cat, maybe cat insurance is much cheaper than the insurance for a 110lb doggie.
I agree that restaurants should have to pay their wait staff minimum wage. Then you could actually tip based on service not because you "have" to tip 20%. Sometimes when I get crappy service I want to tip less but I feel like an asshole.
Most states , if not all, require the restaurant pay minimum wage if the worker does not make it in tips.
That doesn't mean they do. My restaurant didn't require we tell how much tips we made, so if we made a lot, we weren't taxed on it, but if we made nothing-they didn't up us to minimum wage. They figured it all evened out in the end

Yikes, that is expensive! Sorry Ours is around $450/year with a $200 deductible, and wellness exams and preventative care count toward that. Most things are 90-100% reimbursed. Two extra trips to the vet/emergency per year and it pays for itself. I guess we are very lucky with our policy.
Lola ate a corn cob recently, too. She was able to yak it up, though. What is it with them??!!
Haha I mean, it bugs me when I see dogs in peoples family photos... I dont know why, it just does! I know a lot of you have those photos and your dog is a member of your family, so this just means it is truly a UO! It bugs me more so in childless couples. I just think its kinda cheesy.
I said the thing about my cats as a joke like, maybe I am just jealous because I wouldn't be able to get my cats to cooperate for a photo like that. And how come I never see other animals in those photos? Its always a dog. I would love to see a family photo of a happy couple and their rabbit.
And I dont not believe you who said servers make 2-3 dollars an hour. I just never heard that before because that isnt the case here. So I was thinking, 'What are they talking about? Thats not how it is here??"

But the pets are their "children". I feel like our dogs are getting ripped off now that we have M. They don't get anywhere near as much attention and I feel bad. I sent out Christmas cards w/my dogs pictures on them, not us though, just the dogs.
When I was a server at Olive Garden (in NYC, 7 years ago), they added an automatic 18% to the dinner bill, which I was happy about, because tourists were cheap as hell! Some did leave 20% though. The worst was lunch (the soup, salad, breadstick all you can eat combo). It was super cheap and people would run me ragged getting them a billion bowls of soup and then sometimes tip me nothing!! Or just 10%. There were 8 hour lunch shifts that I literally walked home with $20 for the day, after tipping out the bar and bussers. It was horrible. My pay was $2.50 an hour, which all went to taxes. We did have to report tips and you could technically underreport on cash tips, but if you did that, it would look really fishy and could be a red flag to get audited. Also, most/many people tipped with their card. I was a good waitress too. I was very attentive and friendly. But I could not make a living wage there. I quit and went to grad school. I always pay servers 20%, unless they are horrible and then 15%.
Also, re the tips on Starbucks counters, I don't know how it is everywhere, but Starbucks employees here (in CA) only get minimum wage and usually are never scheduled for more than 30 hours a week. They do get health insurance, but they aren't exactly making bank. Plus a tip jar on the counter? I mean, by the time they split that up it's what, a dollar a person? I always assumed those tip jars were mainly just so people would have a place to leave change they didn't want, anyway. I certainly don't feel obligated. But I hate carrying nickels and pennies. They make my wallet to fat to fit in my purse, so I always leave them in tip jars.
I watch Giuliana and Bill (shut up) and it grates my last nerve when they constantly call their son Duke, "the baby". For some reason it annoys me when the child is here and has a name, why not just use their name?
I watch it, too, but everything Giuliana does irritates. I find her really annoying lately.
I had pet insurance for my dog when we first got her. She couldn't control her pee so she needed a vulvaplasty. It cost me $1700 because the insurance co said it was cosmetic. Because I cared what my dog's VULVA looked like. I was SOOO pissed.
I know I've mentioned this before, but at the gyno I use my credit card to pay the co-pay and there's a tip line on it. What's the going rate for that?
OK, my husband works in the credit card processing industry and I had to ask him about this. I am c&p the email exchange because I am laughing so hard:
VS: How would a gynecologist’s office get a tip line on their cc receipts for patients? (lol, long story)
MrVS: Is this a joke? Who leaves a tip when they visit the gyno? Is this a new trend?
VS: No! I mean, would they have had to specifically request it? Or could it be like a second hand machine that had it built in? It is so weird, I am trying to figure out if there is any way it could be an accident.
MrVS: They would have had to specifically request tip line when they got set up initially. No accident. Tip Line at a medical office is far from the norm and a little weird. Not possible with second hand machine as the old programming would be erased.
The fact that they purposefully added the tip line makes this SO much more funny!!!!!
Awesome. Maybe they just think they do really good work.

Yeah, that bugs me. Lol. Not the card with just your dogs, for some reason thats funny to me cause its just your dogs. Its the whole, 'This is my Husband, and our baby who is a dog' thing that bugs me. Its your dog, not your baby. You may love your dog very much and they are a part of your family, but they are not your baby. Your real baby is your baby, and thats why your dog is no longer getting attention anymore. Its sad, its happened with my cats. But, its true.
I am probably not making sense anymore. Those pics just bug me. I want to see a rabbit.

Well you could report them for breaking the law and/or find a new job if you were not making the required minimum wage in your area/federal minimum wage.
Those earning tips are technically supposed to report tips earned when you file your taxes even if your employer has not reported it as income for you.
