There is a damned classic Christmas movie centered around a boy playing with a BB gun, but Black kids can't have them? When did that become illegal for Black kids?
Don't play coy. You know that waving a gun (real or BB) around in public is not going to end well. I don't mean that as in saying that the person will always end up getting harmed I am just saying that when you are acting threatening, you will be perceived as a threat.
Lurker here, but he clearly reaches to his waistband/jacket area. I'm figuring he was probably reaching for the gun to hand it over to the officers, but that is not something that can 100% determined. He was told to put his hands up and instead he reaches for the weapon. An officer cannot be expected to just stand there and wait for whatever is coming. It is a tragedy that this boy died, and my heart goes out to his family. I feel that this could have totally been avoided had someone taught this kid not to "play" with guns (of any kind). They are not toys, even if they are labeled that way. i.e. BB guns, pellet, guns, etc. Full disclosure: I am in law enforcement. I know that you will think that I am biased, but the fact is that there are many dangerous people in this country who do pull "real" guns, knives, etc. on us and we have to react. If we waited to see what kind of weapon the person is going for, we would end up wounded or dead. It is a sad situation all around, but when it comes to my own life or someone else's, I am choosing mine. I am sure some of you will not like this response, but it is just the way it is. No officer wants to have to draw their weapon, but sometimes it is unavoidable.
Fuck off. And for the love of all that is holy, find a new job. You shouldn't be carrying a weapon.

STFU NesC. Seriously, they rolled up right on him and stated firing while they exited the vehicle. Their own statements don't match the video. They are lying liars who lie.

Unless you're a white man open carrying. Or white woman. See the recurring theme here?
Nah, those are innocent children not a scary 12 year old who clearly looks like he's 20.
That officer gave him a second maybe 2, and they drove up 3 feet away from him. Is that standard protocol? Because that approach seems like a sure fire way to 1) put the officers in more immediate danger (since they believe he had a real guy) and 2) start the whole thing off confrontational and escalate the situation. And seriously if they are in SUCH a hurry they can fucking see that he was sitting there minding his own god damn business before they rolled up.
ETA: I really do want to know outside of my anger if driving up onto the grass right next to him is normal. It doesn't seem normal but I don't know.

I don't play coy Boo. I asked where he should be with a BB gun because looking at how folks wander in Wal-Mart and other places with guns on full fucking display and live, I need someone to explain where black kids with toy guns can play with them and live. That's my question.
You can't get skittles and ice tea, you can't ride public transit, you can't get your hair braided, you can't get in the car and your own driveway without someone thinking you are stealing something and the police showing up and shooting you. So, where can you go and what can you do?
This is not me being coy. This is me asking a sarcastic question.

Race has nothing to do with it. Look at all the school shootings in the recent past. They were all white kids. Playing the race card is getting old.
I'm trying to decide if I want to be nice or cuss you out.
But check it. Race didn't magically disappear. And if your ass lurks here, you know good and dayum well that we discuss race issues here weekly. So, you can go back from whence you came with this foolishness.
I know you all don't care what I have to say, and that is fine. I do hope some of you will recognize that the police are really there to help people. It is that "F**K the Police!" attitude that causes so much tension. That is until one you needs help, then it is an entirely different tune. (kiss) Peace out.

Race has nothing to do with what? What do school shootings have to do with unarmed Black men and boys getting killed?
And there is no "race card." Race will never "get old" until people start acknowledging what is happening here. You need to read up a bit and come back to us. If you need recommendations on what to read, we have plenty.

No honey. It's the cops' wall of blue that is creating the dividing line. It rarely is the community that is causing the discord.

What does this have to do with anything?
If anything, it is just more evidence that white men are the problem. The only thing school shootings & the cases we are talking about have in common are white males pulling the triggers.

And I didn't say anywhere, "Fuck the police." I've never said that actually.
But you think my anger at a situation that warrants anger means that that is what I think. And you think that I can't navigate between acknowledging generations of racism in law enforcement in America and understanding the need for law enforcement in a country of millions of people? Check yourself. There is not one regular on this board that is that simple and basic.

this is a collection of my "fuck the police" posts:
It's just so freaking sad for the boy, and racist, and sad for these cops. And I don't know that they need to be disciplined, but I also don't think our collective response should be "Well, that kid should have just listened because there is no other way than shooting."
"There has to be SOME middle ground between officers shooting to kill a suspect (particularly one who hasn't actually been involved in a violent crime) and officers themselves dying."
"I am as much interested in police safety as I am in public safety, and I think it would protect officers from scrutiny and from having to live with situations like this on their shoulders. I bet these two cops feel terrible, man."
"I just want to know if standard protocol includes modifications that show best practices for communicating with children. Do they need longer response time? Are commands given in a way that is understandable to them? What are the best ways of communicating the gravity of the situation? Are confrontations with children more likely to end in a certain way? What can be learned from that data? What methods work to de-escalate confrontation with children?"

"Samuel R. Sommers and Phoebe C. Ellsworth, researchers at the University of Michigan, found that when race is a key issue, societal expectations are elicited and jurors heed popular egalitarian ideals. Yet when the "race card" is not played, whites are more susceptible to making prejudiced decisions."

I think part of the F**K Police mentality would stop if you guys started policing each other instead of protecting each other. This cop killed a child and yet you are so quick to defend him.
If the good cops outed the bad cops (and god forbid FIRED them!) then it would be much easier to trust them. But, nah, you basically have to kill another cop in order to get fired.

This is the attitude that I find so enraging.
There are stacks and stacks of studies and books documenting that this very thing has been going on for centuries. There are names, dates, actual evidence and all that jazz, but people like you just blow it off, assume we just "don't like cops" and are just being unreasonable at best.
