So far I've only seen one foolish post on my FB feed. Ironically, it was from a black man that grew up on the East coast. Of course it was focused on the "dumb rioters" and not on the young man that lost his life.
I needed this post and the ML post this morning, after having to explain that white privilege is a thing. "Why did he run if he hadn't done anything wrong?" Well, maybe because he knows that the cops can kill him for no reason and get away with it because it's Baltimore 'Merica.
I'm so tired of this. I'm not in favor of destroying property, but I can't be angry at them for it.
I feel like the media is not doing a good job telling the story of The reason behind the protest. Maybe it's because we live in Canada but my husband and I were talking about it last night (we don't have CNN) and he reads all the Canadian papers all the time. He is pretty good about keeping up and he hadn't heard the details. He just said 'yeah some guy died in custody' which on the surface doesn't sound that bad. When I explained what happened (I only knew from here) he tried to find articles about it on google. It was hard because everything about the topic was about the riots. And even in the riot coverage - so little speaks to the issue at hand. It will say 'after the funeral of man who died in police custody - RIOT RIOT BAD PEOPLE' this is main stream media. It makes everyone look bad. Thank goodness for Gbcn or we would have no clue. And after he read the whole story, he was shocked and disgusted.
Libraries do amazing work. Glad they're opening all branches today.
On a similar note, I attended the NJ Library Association's conference last week and one of the people/libraries honored included the director of the Ferguson Public Library because they kept their doors open for everyone when people had no other safe place to go during the protests there.
I don't care if I'm my own cheerleader here, but libraries are fucking amazing for a wealth of reasons and I wish more people would realize that before continuing to cut funding for them.

Jamal Bryant is opening his church to all kids today to keep them off the streets while school is cancelled. Rather than just babysit, he's going to teach them about how to do civil disobedience right. How empowering and amazing is that? That's everything I want from this country. I cried when I heard that on CNN this morning.
I am parked before heading into a meeting but I was listening to CNN on Sirius while driving, and CNN was interviewing Billy Murphy (I believe that is his name), the attorney for the Gray family, and I think he gave a great interview. Very straightforward and frank. Let me see if a transcript has been posted yet.
Yes, the kids throw the rocks first, but then the police throw them back. Then the kids "rush" the cops. GMA aired only the part of it where the cops are backing up with the kids throwing rocks after they'd been attacked by the cops.

I'm not a librarian (but an avid reader & user of the public library system in many ways) and I agree with this so much. I'm going to make a donation to Pratt Library tonight: www.prattlibrary.org/support/

I like the sentiment, but today should be about securing the city.

Where are those kids supposed to go? If they're not in school, they're not secure. What safer place for them?

I disagree - take this opportunity to refocus people's anger into something that has the chance of being constructive later on.

So, shockingly, we had a good experience with Fox news last night. They had someone (IDK who because the screen was just videos of the happenings in Baltimore) talking about the history of racism and oppression in America. How what we're seeing here is not the start, but rather a response to decades of systematic oppression and abuse.
We only had it on for about a half hour, until the press conference with the mayor overrode it, but it was really surprisingly balanced. I kept asking my husband, is this really fox news?
AS local pastor is telling kids to come in to his church today at 10. No, they need to stay home and not get angry.
I was listening to the TJMS this morning and many churches are opening up to the kids because a large majority qualify for free Lunch(correct me if I am wrong) so they want to make sure they eat? They also want to speak to the kids and help them direct their energy. Let me see if I can find the sound bite for you.
I have been worried about all of you in Baltimore, please stay safe.
Yes, but getting people all in one place (kids) is a concern. I am hoping for the best, but I worry. Angry got together yesterday (this age).
If they are home, they are (mostly) all together in their neighborhoods with no facilitator. Its a powder keg waiting to happen again.
If they are spread out at churches and libraries with facilitators of some sort, it at least has a chance to calm things down. They might even be able to slow down the use of social media (through directing energy elsewhere or having people leave phones at the door).

I really am hoping you all are right. It is now closing in on my school area (targets to schools in area, mall and business closing in this area now). So, I am obviously heightened more than those not right in the thick of it.

The Minister also expressed concern that kids would be home alone without anyone to help them deal with what was going on.

I'd like to get out of work before they start closing down our buildings. I also hate that it seems like I'm a fear mongerer.
I just posted this on ML, but we're open today but it's a GHOST TOWN here. Clearly people either took off or are WFH. My boss would never think, on his own, to just let his TWO employees WFH today.
And as the National Guard is supposedly posted across the street from my office.... yeah, I feel a bit nervous. I kind of hope they let us leave early too.

I'm on the 7th floor of a building and I keep peeping out the window to see if they've shut down 695 yet. So far so good. I'm leaving at 11. I want to get home to my kids. I don't want to be stuck here.
