I feel like the media is not doing a good job telling the story of The reason behind the protest. Maybe it's because we live in Canada but my husband and I were talking about it last night (we don't have CNN) and he reads all the Canadian papers all the time. He is pretty good about keeping up and he hadn't heard the details. He just said 'yeah some guy died in custody' which on the surface doesn't sound that bad. When I explained what happened (I only knew from here) he tried to find articles about it on google. It was hard because everything about the topic was about the riots. And even in the riot coverage - so little speaks to the issue at hand. It will say 'after the funeral of man who died in police custody - RIOT RIOT BAD PEOPLE' this is main stream media. It makes everyone look bad. Thank goodness for Gbcn or we would have no clue. And after he read the whole story, he was shocked and disgusted.
So, shockingly, we had a good experience with Fox news last night. They had someone (IDK who because the screen was just videos of the happenings in Baltimore) talking about the history of racism and oppression in America. How what we're seeing here is not the start, but rather a response to decades of systematic oppression and abuse.
We only had it on for about a half hour, until the press conference with the mayor overrode it, but it was really surprisingly balanced. I kept asking my husband, is this really fox news?
I saw this too. It was Sheppard Smith. I was surprised.
I'm really concerned about the rumors about Security Square Mall. I truly hope nothing happens and it's all rumor. Otherwise... I don't even want to think

Every time I see something like this on Fox, it's Sheppard Smith. He shared similar sentiments in Ferguson.
This was so interesting. I love his idea that he wants to use this time to educate. This is how I feel, violence by authority (police and city officials - curfews, national guard, etc.) should not be met with violence, but instead with opposition. I get the feeling that that some of the violence/riots are coming from a sense of anger at not being heard or not seeing any change and I sort of understand that, especially if you're young and all your life it's been the same. This quote is great - I would have never thought that leaving the schools open to "impart some knowledge" and background would be best without Pastor Jamal Bryant's perspective outlined:
If anything these kids needed to be in one concentrated area so that we could impart some knowledge. So the consequence, Roland and Tom, I opened up my church today so that we can have an institute, so that they understand what civil disobedience means, what is the historical perspective, and so that you understand you don’t loot CVS to get justice. You don’t steal tennis shoes in order for you to represent the name of Freddie Gray. And so these young people really have got to be acclimated because we’re way off course from where it is we started just a week ago.

I was already on my way to work when they announced that they won't be opening at noon after all. I'm gathering a few things and heading right back out.

Not surprised it was SS. John Stewart once compiled this amazing bunch of clips by him, and called him the "black shep of Fox News." He is legit. I'm not sure how he still has a job there.

I'm sorry, but I really have to just laugh at anyone listening to Ray Lewis as a spokesperson for a call to stop the violence...he was accused of murder and has the nerve to tell people to get off the street? The fuck?
He posted a video on FB, luckily those comments are actually nice to read.

He is pretty popular though so maybe some people will listen to him.

Exactly. I feel like people always pull out the murder charges, but that was 15 years ago. Since then, he has become a very popular figure in this city and one that many people look up to. I do think his speaking out might actually impact some of those who look up to him.

This attitude right here is a big part of the problem. So because he was accused of committing a crime 15 years ago he isn't able to denounce the violence that is happening now?

Many kids and adults look up to him and people do listen to him.
Now we can sit and argue all day about accused and acquitted of murder, but I don't see anything laughable about a man who has dedicated his life to the city and done much to improve it using his voice to quell things.
And since we was to talk about negative people using their voice, a notorious drug kingpin was asked by the police in the 1968 riots to help calm things down. Sometimes you have to do what you have to do.
Gang members saying they did not make a truce to hurt Cops.
I believe them.
Going after cops on purpose makes no sense. These gangs are basically running businesses, between drugs and weapons and such. They don't want to bring heat on themselves. They're not stupid.

Which leads to the police purposefully flaming the fires of hysteria.
