Going after cops on purpose makes no sense. These gangs are basically running businesses, between drugs and weapons and such. They don't want to bring heat on themselves. They're not stupid.
Which leads to the police purposefully flaming the fires of hysteria.
As much as I hate to say it, yeah. I think that's exactly what they were doing.
The president also used the word thug in his comments. thug, criminal, etc. Made an effort to differentiate the criminal/looting behavior from the legit protests, but also said that all the classy protesting happening thus far wasn't getting nearly as much attention as it deserved and that it was CLEARLY about fucking time to make a goddamn change. You know....except in Obama-speak.

I know this is derailing from the issue, but I'd love an app that took my uneloquent, mis-stated rants and turned them into passionate, eloquent Obama-speak rants to share.

whereas I kinda wish that he would use the Obama Anger Translator more often. He sounded like he was being very careful through several sections of that statement.

Senator Joan Carter Conway was just interviewed in front of a burned out church bus , and the interviewer just asked "Do you think we've failed their parents to?" and she said "Yes, we have and if we hadn't maybe these children would know better, and understand that this is not how problems are solved."
At least there is some acknowledgement that it goes way beyond just these kids, and it's a generational issue.
Can I ask- why are all the calls for black men? Last night on the news, there was a call for all black men to meet at the church where Freddie Gray's funeral was held. I just heard there was another call for black men (I didn't hear what for, I'm off and on with the news).
Is this just another sign of how little value is given to black women?

Because black men are missing most in these children's lives, and they need to see that there are positive black men out there. Black women/mothers already do a lot to try and raise black men, so that they can live to see adulthood. This is not a case of devaluing black women.

Also, this is likely in line with several initiatives promoting health for both African American men AND boys (e.g., My Brother's Keeper). Yes, some fathers are missing. However, an important part of this debate is the generational effects. We forget that many of these young boys will (hopefully) grow into men--who have children. How we address their needs and involve them in the process may have important implications for their own well-being and their engagement as adults. Think about an African American man who grew up in the same neighborhood feeling powerless. It can be difficult to discuss with your own children (or any young person). So, they may self-protect and/or disengage. I think this call is important because many Black men feel powerless. That call is to say that YOU (Af-Am) are important and can make valuable contributions to your community. This is something that isn't said in constructive ways often. The larger message is that men/boys aren't valuable. The larger narrative about Freddie Gray is that he wasn't a valuable citizen. So, this serves a generational purpose. As we know, how men fare impacts how families fare.

Yeah. And people are praising her for stopping her son looting.
Personally, I think she's scared shitless that he'll be killed and wanted him home.

I'm with you. Being a masked black man in that situation is playing with your life.

This has been in my feed ALL day. People have been using it as "see even their mothers know that they're acting like 'animals'" and calling her "mother of the year". It makes me uncomfortable for a host of reasons.
I'm looking at the photos of Baltimore citizens cleaning up the debris and mess left by yesterday's events and the text accompanying these photos is almost shock. It's as if white America can't quite grasp that AA neighbors and residents of that area would clean up their neighborhood and take pride in where they live and work.
Of course they would! Who do people think is going to clean up, huh?? The people that live there have to clean it up.
It would mean so much more if I saw the city's police force, police chief, mayor, councilmen and women, walking the streets with trash bags, brooms, wearing reflective vests, handing out water bottles and lunches, talking to those residents and APOLOGIZING, talking about what to do next, asking the people what THEY want to change and then really changing it. NOW is the time to make change. Now is the time for city and state officials to make right the wrongs they have turned a blind eye to. They have a golden moment to do the right thing. Don't leave this on the residents to fix it all by themselves.

The hashtag on the FB sidebar is #motheroftheyear. :^)

She may be a great mom. But, the hypocrisy in the argument is troubling. These are the same people talking about not using physical punishment EVER for a child. It brings up the harsh reality that people don't see that young, Black teenager as a child (in the same way that they see their child or children that look like their child)--which brings us back to where we started.
