I cannot fathom how someone who claims to be a democrat can hate Bernie so much that they would vote for Bloomberg. He is vile. And if we elect him we lose all ground on claiming we care about racism, sexism, sexual assault, class equity, democracy...
Because Bernie cannot win against Trump. I'm sorry, but I honestly believe that is the truth. He has a low ceiling on his numbers. Bloomberg is already nearing even with Bernie, and isn't even officially in the race yet.
Did you watch the debate? There is no way that Bloomberg beats trump. He has the personality of a wet towel.
Trump has a weird, cultish personality and it is going to take someone very strong to beat him. I think that *could* be a moderate candidate, but that magical candidate is not Bloomberg.
why do people think that Bloomberg can win or will energize downballot races?
Because he is an old white man. That's literally it. There is no possible other reason to justify that given that he is unvetted, untested with the broader electorate, and has only been running for president for like 5 mins.
I’m not a Bloomberg fan at all but he has the money to go toe-to-toe with trump. He seems like the type to blow a huge amount of his own money going after this. Trump has proven that money talks and if Bloomberg wants to spend his taking down Donnie No Good I’ll let him.
I understand that Bloomberg is flawed. Very. He’s not the candidate I would pick. But voting for Trump over him or staying home. I’m scratching my head. He might not be better than Trump in a lot of ways but he does seem to believe in climate change. If that’s the only difference between him and Trump that’s enough for me to vote for him.
He’s racist. ::whispers:: most old whites are. That’s just reality. Black people have been holding their nose and voting for the least awful person since forever.
“With sorrow—for this Court, but more, for the many millions of American women who have today lost a fundamental constitutional protection—we dissent,”

Exactly. People aren’t racist or sexist, they’re just more comfortable with a White man. 🤷♀️

I feel strange defending Bloomberg, since I do prefer Bernie in this matchup. But I also feel Bloomberg would know how to handle Trump. In the Democratic debates, there are a lot of different voices that make him cranky. But Trump is a con-man that he has dealt with for a long time. He would know how to laser in on Trump's weaknesses.

I had a discussion with a friend of mine who lived in Queens during Bloomberg. She cannot imagine living through his leadership again. Also, the shit he did to NYC schools is shameful.
She sees Bloomberg as cut from the same cloth. She will write in a name before voting for him. I will follow her lead.
I just can’t get over Bloomberg’s racism and sexual allegations—especially the fact that he pulled the old “I guess they just can’t take a joke” mantra out at the debate.
I'm floored that in a Bloomberg v Trump matchup, people would choose not to vote. I'm sorry, but I can't possibly imagine how Bloomberg could be worse than Trump. He clearly is terrible, but come on. At least he wouldn't be putting kids in cages. You really would rather continue with what we have now???

The Supreme Court! I’m sure we will be fine with four more years of Trump /s

What makes you so sure that Bloomberg would make better decisions regarding immigration or the SC?

I’m not a Bloomberg fan but Ds would hold him accountable and wouldn’t let him be what Trump is the way Rs are. Trump and Rs are a whole other level with this shit.

Bloomberg is despicable enough that I could actually see him getting more done- some of his programs would appeal to the Rs who would spin it as working across the aisle. I think it really will depend on who controls the Senate and House.
I haven’t made up my mind one way or another on what I would do if the nominee if Bloomberg, but I just don’t think we can count on the Democrats blocking his proposals if they’re awful. Even if the Dems have a slim majority, of Bloomberg’s policies appeal to enough Republicans, the combination of some Ds and some Rs supporting the policies could push them through.

I’m not suggesting anyone support Bloomberg. I’m just saying I think he’d be better than Trump and the Rs which are a toxic stew of criminality, incompetence, and spineless behavior.
But I also legitimately think my dog would be a better president than trump and would vote for my dog over Trump if she had a D behind her name on November 3rd.

Im not sure of much but I have a hard time believing anyone, anyone would be worst than Trump. I’m willing to let someone else try. Do you think Bloomberg would put up R leaning candidates for the SC?
I suppose I’m always willing to give anyone a chance over a well known piece of shit. That included Bernie who I greatly dislike. I’d vote for Biden. #anybodybuttrump2020
I would absolutely vote for Bloomberg over Trump, so in the actual election I wouldn't sit it out. The devil we know is really, really bad. I'd rather vote for a chance that Bloomberg would be better. I can't imagine he'd be any worse.
If it came down to that in the primary though I'd vote Bernie for sure. I have a lot of concerns about his electability, but we closely align on values and issues and while I have issues with a lot of aspects of who he is as a person, I do believe him that he wants what's best for the people. Honestly, if it comes down to these two we have little chance of winning the general election anyway, so I may as well vote with my conscience and values and make that statement.

I actually think he might. He was a Republican for his first two terms as NYC mayor and then declared himself Independent in order to subvert term limits to serve a 3rd term. He’s very right leaning and would likely make pretty conservative choices for the Supreme Court, especially if he is working with a Republican senate.

That was a real question so thank you for answering.

You’re welcome. The Supreme Court has always played heavily into my voting decisions, and is a reason that for me Bloomberg is a no go. If the GOP keeps the Senate but Democrats take the White House I simply don’t trust Bloomberg to choose well. Most people up there would choose someone of the Garland ilk (if not Garland himself), but I don’t trust Bloomberg not to take advantage and choose another justice who is likely to put business over people and ignore the importance of Roe.

So what will you do if we end up in this dooms day scenario?

I’m genuinely not sure. I’m choosing to speak out against Bloomberg through the primary and hope we aren’t put in that position. I’m not ready to borrow trouble.
I’m in NJ, so I don’t get a primary vote until June, which makes it unlikely I’ll change the outcome. We’re also a reliably blue state, so it’s unlikely my vote would change that the way it could if I were in a swing state.
In this hellish nightmare, I'd *almost* assert my privilege and write-in Kamala because I'm fairly certain Bernie would get the nod over Bloomberg in WA state (though I've seen a number of Bloomberg yard signs popping up here recently.) But of the two, I'd reluctantly choose Bernie over Bloomberg. I have a legitimate fear of either of them getting the nomination.
Bernie is a non-productive shouty old man who would accomplish nothing except disgust people who voted for him as the lesser of two evils. His ideas won't get traction unless we also win the Senate and keep the House and THEY move things forward. Because Shouty doesn't do shit except complain. And so in 2024 there would be a Republican revolt and traction to get the Oval and Congress under R control again in 2024 and beyond.
Bloomberg did a lot of bad for NY as mayor, no matter how pretty he paints it now. And he didn't change his stance on much of it until as recently as 2019. He's done some good as well, I'm sure, but there's enough bad with him as an R for most of his life and still holding a **lot** of their ideals. I'm also one who votes with the judicial in mind (comes with the territory of working for Plaintiff firms and my husband being a union attorney until he wasn't, lol.) I don't hold faith that he'll appoint good judges to the bench. Maaaaybe he will if he's truly changed his stance on gun control (though that likelihood also IMO is geared toward white supremacy/racism and keeping guns out of the "gang members and criminals" (read: minority) with a side slice of keeping guns out of schools in suburbia (because UMC white kids shooting up schools is now a thing that should be curtailed.) I just don't trust that he's turned Democrat rather than maintaining a Republican stance with some Democratic ideals that make him appealing to the centrists who don't do their actual homework or lurk on boards like this where people that know their stuff discuss said stuff. It seems he's proving the Donald Trump meme of "If I was going to run for President I'd do it as a Democrat..." right.
