Are all your boomer parents stressed out? They don’t have young children, don’t work, doing fine financially. So what are they stressed about?
From personal experience, the neighbors didn’t bring in the recycling bins quickly enough; a car parked on the street in front of their house even though everyone knows you’re supposed to leave that space for the people who live there; someone used improper grammar and must be corrected.
I saw that WaPo headline this morning and it was like a gut punch. My fear is that the GOP is fine with tanking the global economy because they think it will hurt Joe Biden's reelection chances. Clearly they prioritize winning over everything else. Let's hope if it comes to that the White House will just make the trillion dollar coin.
I'm a big library user, and I've also got a long hold list. Sometimes I'm just not in the mood for a certain book when it's finally available. One other trick I've learned: my library adds new books to the catalog on Tuesdays, so I browse through the new release section on Libby to make sure I don't miss any new books by my favorite authors. It' s a good way to find new books you might not otherwise see!
In the mystery genre, here's some of my favorites: -A Good Girl's Guide to Murder by Holly Jackson (if you want a fast-paced series where a high schooler tries to solve a local murder as her senior project, but things quickly go off the rails) -Truly Devious by Maureen Johnson (if you want a super smart high schooler at an academy trying to solve a 1930s cold case that quickly turns hot) -The Chief Inspector Gamache Series by Louise Penny (if you want a gentle Canadian detective solving murders) -I Have Some Questions for You by Rebecca Makkai (if you want a true-crime podcast inspired mystery that will make you think about the weird parts of being in high school in the 90s) -Vera Wong's Unsolicited Advice for Murderers by Jesse Q. Sutanto (also the Dial A for Aunties series! if you want an older amateur sleuth who does a lot of cooking and bossing people around) -The Golden Spoon by Jessa Maxwell (if you want a Great British Baking Show inspired mystery) -The Thursday Murder Club Series by Richard Osman (if you want English retirement community cozy mystery vibes) -The Inheritance Games Series by Jennifer Lynn Barnes (if you want billionaire riddles and mysteries with a YA twist)
Sometimes when I'm in a reading slump, I need to step back and ask myself what I feel like reading. Am I burned out on thrillers/suspense but I'd like to dig into a juicy mystery? Did a beautiful literary fiction book that slowed down my reading pace leave me wanting a YA book I can finish in a day? If you read in multiple genres, switching things up can often break a slump. I also like the idea of rereading a favorite book.
Instead of setting a daily page goal or trying to read every day, maybe you can find a time of day when you like to read. I read every night before bed, so even on busy days, I make time for reading. It sounds like you're putting a lot of pressure on yourself, so maybe switch things up and read a graphic novel or a play.
I'd let it go. I'd talk to my kid about how the 1st grade isn't a "bad" class, it just has more kids and a louder lunchtime. Our elementary school does something similar by class, and my 3rd grader's class has won a lot more rewards than my 1st grader's class. Some teachers are stricter or more generous, and we use it to talk about how some things aren't even or fair. Honestly, only getting one recess in 1st grade is a much bigger problem IMO––my 1st grader gets three recesses a day.
Here are the passages Alabama doesn't want educators to read:
“Early childhood programs also serve and welcome families that represent many compositions. Children from all families (e.g., single parent, grandparent-led, foster, LGBTQIA+) need to hear and see messages that promote equality, dignity, and worth,” the book states.
The section on structural racism states that “systemic and structural racism ... has permeated every institution and system through policies and practices that position people of color in oppressive, repressive, and menial positions. The early education system is not immune to these forces.” It says preschool is one place where children “begin to see how they are represented in society” and that the classroom should be a place of "affirmation and healing."
So I guess Alabama's governor wants preschools to be unwelcoming and actively harmful to people of color, LGBTQ families, and single parents.
“When the speaker asks me to apologize on behalf of decorum, what he is really asking me to do is be silent when my community is facing bills that get us killed; he’s asking me to be complicit in this Legislature’s eradication of our community,” she said.
“I refuse to do so. I will always refuse to do so,” she added.
Related: Senator Megan Hunt in Nebraska is being formally investigated for “conflict of interest” for standing up for trans Nebraskans. The conflict? She has a trans son.
GOP'er listening to the "I Have A Dream" speech: Wait, did MLK just say his kids are BLACK? That's a total conflict of interest; he can't be pro-civil rights.
Every time the GOP reaches new depths of cruelty and ridiculousness, they find a way to keep digging.
And a second follow-up question would be- if you have more than one child or had siblings- do they/you treat money the same way? (like spending vs saving, that sort of thing)
I'd say similar but not the same. My sister and I are both savings-focused, but she has a very hard time spending money while it's a lot easier for me, lol. I see something similar with my kids, who just started getting an allowance. The younger one spends it right away while the older one saves up for bigger things. We talk a lot about saving and our family budget, along with our priorities around money.
There's a bit of nature vs. nurture going on. Kids can be raised in the same environment and come out very different. They can generally adopt their parents' outlook or reject it. As a parent, it's helpful to remind myself that there's a limit to how much I can shape my kids. They'll make their own choices and have their own struggles. I don't like the coworker's implication that if you'd just keep your kid in the dark about money, they wouldn't have any issues with spending or consumerism. That's ridiculous.
Not too late IMO! I never purchase kid birthday gifts that far in advance—or if I do, I’ll get like 5 of the same thing and throw it in the closet to use as gifts, so it would be super simple not to bring one. Actually, I usually have to check the invite again like 3 days before because I forget if they said no gifts.
I’d send an update saying no gifts, please, and expect that some people will do gifts anyways.
My understanding is that even a dissolution requires a lawyer to draw up the paperwork, it’s just decided by us, and is also accomplished in 30-90 days. Whereas a divorce could be up to a year (in Ohio) and would require both of us having a lawyer.
You need a lawyer to represent YOUR interests. If you hire a lawyer to draw up the dissolution paperwork, they're also representing your soon-to-be-ex. As someone else mentioned, you have the most to lose in this situation, so you need to protect yourself (and your kids).
Here's my theory: What if Tucker Carlson is leaving to run for the GOP nomination?
DeSantis has been imploding and Tucker has always had political ambitions. Maybe he sees an opening but needs to leave Fox first. That's why Trump left the Apprentice, after all.
I would worry about that...except I don't think he'd take on Trump. They'd be fighting for the same 30-40% of primary voters, the other 60ish% are open to a Trump alternative but they want someone "less controversial."
Also Trump didn't leave the Apprentice, NBC canceled the show.
Tucker seems delusional enough to take on Trump, but the sudden firing without a last show does make it seem like it wasn't Tucker's choice to leave.
The last couple of years have stolen my optimism that bad people will experience consequences, so of course my mind is spinning out scenarios where this is bad for America.

Here's WaPo on Alito: "Alito said the administration and the public would not have been harmed by agreeing with the lower court to roll back restrictions loosened by the FDA in recent years." <--- more proof that "the public" apparently doesn't include women or anyone who can get pregnant.
I had a dachshund chihuahua mix that sounds a lot like yours––loud barking at squirrels, noises, other dogs, people . . . it's definitely a pain. And they do have such a big bark for a small dog!
We just sort of lived with it. Our dog was a real wuss but would bark at anything far away (and then wimper/cower if dogs came closer). We stopped going to the dog park because it clearly stressed her out. From what our trainer said, it's a pretty common behavioral issue for dachshunds.
Not a medical doctor, but I've recently had a parent with heart-related issues. In my experience, if doctors are worried about heart stuff, they send you straight to the ER.
It's possible that the cardiologist will run tests that require intervention. But for now, it sounds like the GP doesn't think it's a dangerous situation since they said your husband can exercise and he has no chest pain. I can see why you're worried about going abroad, but you're probably fine to leave town.
According to the Miami Herald, the 13-year-old posted memes on Snapchat but the threats were posted by a different username. Authorities redacted that information in the warrant they circulated. Check out the Miami Herald article.
An unredacted version of the warrant, obtained by the Herald, shows the threatening messages were sent by a username that was different than the one Jones’ son used to send the memes. The document does not say how authorities determined both usernames are linked to the same account. The redacted version circulated by authorities does not reveal that there were two different usernames involved.
Obviously people can have more than one username (we know all about that on GBCN). But why redact it? Jones says another kid sent the threats, not her son.
Oh man, the day Bliss/AM+PM said she could just "run to work" to save money and it would only take her 10 minutes to run 2 miles . . . That was a fun one. I wonder what she's up to now. It's kind of hard to imagine her in her 30s; she'll always be, like, 22 in my memories.
Here's what stood out to me in the article: "According to Jones, a threat assessment was completed in which both local police and the school signed off on the messages not being a threat. Two weeks later, Jones says her son was then arrested. When Jones asked the officers who ordered the arrest, she says an officer told her 'it was the state.'”
If police and the school reviewed the messages and didn't consider it a threat, why is the state ordering her son's arrest? And how often does the state overrule schools and local police to arrest children who post similar content in group threads with friends?
But don't worry, guys, Thomas says he prefers Walmart parking lots to beaches, so I'm sure there's nothing to see here.
Yes, this is an ACTUAL QUOTE from a SCOTUS justice: "I prefer the RV parks. I prefer the Walmart parking lots to the beaches and things like that. There’s something normal to me about it,” Thomas said. “I come from regular stock, and I prefer that — I prefer being around that.”
"DeSantis tried to destroy my reputation, undermine my credentials and work, intimidate me by ordering an armed raid on my home, silence me by jailing me, and threaten me with prison for refusing to drop my whistleblower case. He failed every time.
It's been three weeks since we filed our lawsuit against the state.
Last night, they arrested my son for non- threatening snapchat memes. The officer said it was the state's call.
That corrupt, fascist pig is about to find out that the runway people gave him to defame and attack me isn't there when you kidnap and charge 13 year old autistic kids whose parents happen to be your 'worst nightmare' with felony threats of terrorism for sharing snapchat memes.
I have been through this media circus before. I'm not the 30-year-old naive scientist that I was when this all started.
I'm going to take every ounce of pain, fear and helplessness I'm feeling right now into saving my son and making sure you never escape what you've done."
