What I really need to do is head up to BC and take a ferry, so I can get the real Nanaimo bar experience.
They're not gross at all, they're heavenly. BUT. Ya gotta like coconut, and sugary frosting texture. Idk where in the PNW you are, but QFC and Fred Meyer has them in the bakery. Treat yo'self!
I'm within a mile of a QFC and a Fred Meyer, lol. Clearly I need to go get a Nanaimo bar - for science!
Oh my kids definitely knew that babies come out of vaginas by preschool. As toddlers I would say "You grew in my tummy and then I pushed you out my vagina." They thought it was pretty funny.
Mr. Smock thought babies came out of butts as a kid, and I didn't want that misinformation passed on!
I've been using 2nd gen AirPods for almost three years, and I use them daily – they're still going strong! I got them for free when we bought a laptop, and I'm definitely planning to replace with my own money when these ones die. They're fantastic and sound so much better than my wired apple earbuds!
I didn't know mine until I got pregnant. Turns out I'm RH negative, so now I also know my kids' blood types (I also got the painful Rhogam shots, mae0111!).
Here's why I already bought tickets: Greta Gerwig, campy/hilarious trailer, all the buzz . . . It looks like a super fun time!
Plus, I was one of those kids who didn't play with Barbies and avoided the hyper-pink stuff, but now as a geriatric millennial I'm super into hot pink, lol.
On top of the total lack of POC, did anyone else notice the massive gender imbalance?
I'm a little crazy, so I dug into the numbers. Out of the 50 states, 38 (or 76%) are represented by a man alone (or with other people/aliens blurry in the background). 10 states have both men and women (including families and couples). Only 2 states are represented by just a woman alone.
Add it up and there are 48 men and 20 women shown, and a big percentage of those women are daughters shown with their fathers.
AI reflects society, and bias in AI is a huge problem.
So he wants to ban mentions of race in discussions about a race massacre? Oh, wait, scratch that. He'd prefer we simply never discuss the history of racial terrorism and white supremacy in the U.S.
Let's be honest, the students who benefit the most from preferential treatment in admissions are legacies and white student-athletes who otherwise wouldn't get in.
Based on the NPR piece stating that bans on considering race deter Black and Latino students from applying to selective schools, I wonder if we'll see an increase in applications to HBCUs and HSIs (Hispanic Serving Institutions).
Job A is the job for now. Job B is for the future, when you're recovered from burnout and your kids aren't so young. I would take Job A with zero hesitation, but tell Job B you're grateful for the offer and would be open to talking more in a few years.
But I’m guessing we/the family are never going to know exactly what happened, correct? Everyone saying that they died quickly, so speculation is that things were just business as usual, they were enjoying themselves and then in an instant the pressure crushed everything?
If they were 2 miles deep in the ocean, any breech of the hull would cause a catastrophic failure in milliseconds because of the pressure. It sounds like it likely happened only and hour and a half into the journey on Sunday, when the surface vessel lost contact with the submersible.
I've heard unconfirmed reports that some of the final messages from Titan indicated that they were descending at too fast of a rate, so there might have been tense moments onboard. But once the hull breached, they would have died instantly.
My name was mispronounced a lot as a kid, so I gave my kids names that aren’t often mispronounced (even though they’re not super common).
I love having an uncommon name but I was a shy kid who hated correcting people. It’s interesting to think how our experience with our own names shapes how we name our kids!
My 3rd grader has done this off and on for YEARS. Like, since she became an older sister and the baby "got all the attention."
She thinks babies are cute so everyone will like her if she acts like a baby. That's obviously not true, as all of us in the thread know, lol. But I try to remind myself that it's her way of saying she wants to feel cared for and taken care of. The baby talk decreases when she's getting one on one time with us and when she's feeling good about school/friends/life.
Can you sue her? Apparently in my state you can sue someone for cutting down a tree on your property. That won't undo the emotional damage, but it would at least be some payback to your awful neighbor.
I want to echo toepick – if you're using AI for any type of research, make sure to check the sources. I've played around with Bard and ChatGPT. They both invent books, articles, primary source quotes, etc. And they make up statistics and data if they can't find it. So just be careful to double check info!
It sounds like you can't disagree with him without him "punishing" you by ignoring you or claiming his behavior is your fault. You also mention holding back things that you were scared to say before now. That really does not sound like a healthy dynamic.
Maybe he will change. It takes time, obviously, and there will be slip-ups like the basketball thing. But maybe you're done and you don't want to wait around for him to change.
You're being honest with him. Now is the time to pay attention to his actions, not just his words. And you don't have to know what you want to do today. It's hard to feel in limbo, but collecting more information might help you feel confident about the decision you ultimately make.
Oh man, that sounds so hard when you're solo parenting with an 8 week old! My kids are early risers rather than bedtime delayers, but what worked for us was bribes. If the kids stayed in their room until the okay to wake clock, they both got chocolate chips when they came out. Sorry, dentist, creating a good habit was more important. And it only took maybe a week before they did it without the bribe.
I wonder if something like that might help – if she stays in her room (even if she's not in her bed), she gets a treat first thing in the morning.
Another trick we used to keep the kids in their room during "quiet rest time" after they dropped naps was putting three M&Ms each in a tupperware outside their door. If they came out, I ate an M&M. At the end of quiet rest time, they got to eat whatever was left. It was a win-win, because if they came out at least I got chocolate.
I'm a freelancer, so I get paid through PayPal and Venmo. I usually transfer money to my bank account once a month. But I should probably do it more often. 😬
I'm almost done reading "Fourth Wing" based on BookTok hype, and I'm loving it! Definitely recommend if you like fast-paced fantasy, anything dragon-related, or school/college settings.
Venice is the perfect city to just walk around, chill in different cafes, and soak it all in. With three days, I wouldn’t try to do Verona, but you could easily visit Murano, Burano, Torcello, and some of the other islands in the lagoon. Public boats go to all the islands, so it’s really affordable. You can see glass making in Murano, lace making in Burano, and one of the oldest churches in the Veneto in Torcello.
Or head to Lido and do a beach day! There’s tons of fun beach shops and food places, and it’s a super short vaporetto ride from Venice.
I spent a summer in Venice and visiting those islands (plus walking all over Venice from one end to the other) are some of my favorite memories.
As a parent raising vegetarian kids, I'd be annoyed by the only protein suggestions being meat. It sounds like whoever's writing the notes is on some kind of power trip. I'd send a note back tomorrow saying you've discussed your kid's diet with their pediatrician and the daycare needs to politely back off.
I run 4 days a week and I row 2-3 times a week. For the past year, I've been trying to hit 7k steps minimum a day, so I also go for a walk on non-running days.
There's definitely a lack of strength training in my regular schedule, but this is probably the most consistently active I've been in years, so I'm not beating myself up about it.
