Yes, the guy ends up dead in the box. "I dig him up every now and then, yoho, yoho" goes the song.
I guess the college rugby community of New England is like the KKK now, filled with horrible shitty people including me, my husband, members of our family, and all our friends. (wilted)
"Hello babies. Welcome to Earth. It's hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It's round and wet and crowded. On the outside, babies, you've got a hundred years here. There's only one rule that I know of, babies-"God damn it, you've got to be kind.”
The women didn't sing the S&M song. And TBH we always thought that song was over the top. We only did co-ed socials twice a year so we didn't always hear the men's songs. When I said "the words were the same" I meant the yoho yoho song.
I already said that I see the problems with it. Am I going to go to the alumni reunion and refuse to sing the songs? Probably not. It's not my hill to die on with them (I didn't necessarily mean with you all).
I specifically asked you, specifically and clearly, if you sang "stabbing their ears and mutilating their genitals with a blender? Cutting them in half and using their own blood as lube for anal penetration?" Your response was "yes, the words were exactly the same."
You are missing the point here that perpetuation of rape culture is not a small thing and that you are motherfucking defending it because you feel that it was the essence of your childhood or some shit.
This is why I said that I'm personally struggling with it. Because generally I'm very against the perpetuation of rape culture so it's sort of a personal conundrum here.
I can ask H if the words were exactly the same to the S&M man song. It's done in a call and response kind of way, so they take turns singing out the verses and then the group chimes in with the chorus. I think I misunderstood when you asked about the words because there are two songs in the OP.
i missed that the neophilia was in the yoho song. my bad. i thought it was just singing about blowjobs like LoveTrains posted.
i revise my statement.
both are horrible, shitty things to sing.
and saying that it brought your community together is like saying you found a sense of family while at a cross burning.

Horrible people? Probably not- I don't know you personally. But, you're definitely part of the problem rather than part of the solution. It's kind of like if you and your friends used racial slurs, even though you "have tons of blah friends!" Regardless, you're contributing to the systematic debasement of women and the perpetuation of rape culture, and that behavior is fucking gross.
I hope to God none of the people who hear you sing this (or who feel like they have to play along with this little charade in the name of "bonding") have ever been a victim of sexual violence.
LoveTrains, how would you feel if you were raped or assaulted in college and then had to be associated with groups that sang this shit for funsies? what if one of your teammates had been raped and at the next game had to listen to this shit? can you see how hurtful that would be?
but it was totally fun, right, so who gives a shit?
No you're right, I would feel terrible about that. That would be really really awful. I mean that in all seriousness.
Most of the women's songs were sex positive. Like google the lyrics to "I don't want to be a housewife."
I don't want to be a housewife I'd much rather be a whore I'd rather turn some tricks Involving foot-long dicks Housework is such a bloody bore, oh blimey I don't want to mop this fucking kitchen I don't want to sweep this fucking floor I'm not even getting paid I'd rather be getting laid And as it is I have to ask for more, oh blimey
Mondays I'd strut the streets of Stratford Tuesdays I'd beat some meat in Wales And Wednesdays by the Thames I'd lay them ten by ten Thursday's saved for all that's female Friday's for hand jobs and for blow jobs Saturday's for gang-bangs occupied (occupied) And Sunday at the palace I'd mount his royal phallus And take his royal regence for a ride, oh blimey
I don't want to be a housewife I'd much rather be a whore I'd rather turn some tricks Involving foot-long dicks Housework is such a bloody bore, oh blimey Don't want to have this fucking baby I'll leave the house this very fucking day, fucking day And strut the streets of (Eugene), Oh, mighty, mighty, (Eugene), And fornicate my fucking life away!
NO. I don't care if it makes me fucking sex negative prude. This is NOT sex positive.

Keep in mind that 1/4 women has been sexually assaulted. It is virtually assured that you did this to someone at some point.

Weird to think that there are still people who use tradition as a way to justify this kind of shit. You don't have to be a brain surgeon to realize why this is a dangerous stance to take. Rugby culture sounds awful. Glad I never was exposed to any of that type of crap in college. Not the memories I'd feel proud of.

The sad thing is that now you will all have a very negative opinion of rugby - and rightly so when you see the song.
But there are good things to it, like it was a walk on sport that anyone could join. It encourages women to be fierce and physical. I learned how to tackle. I learned how to ruck. I learned that I could have a great group of women who would be there for me no matter what.
And you're right, it is sad if there was a member of my team who had been assaulted and then heard the men sing the S&M man song. And with 50 women on the team I am sure there was one of them out there, although I didn't necessarily know of it. And now I feel badly about that.
I already said that I see the problems with it. Am I going to go to the alumni reunion and refuse to sing the songs? Probably not. It's not my hill to die on with them (I didn't necessarily mean with you all).
Honest question - if you see how horrible these songs are and the problems associated with them, why not? Is it a peer pressure thing? Like all the rugby kids won't let you sit with them if you aren't participating? It may be a throw back to all those great lessons they try to teach us as teens, but I would imagine that there are multiple people who are no longer okay with these songs (or were never really okay with them) that would stand behind you if you remarked that this was not cool and that you'd prefer to let those songs die along with your college days. Sometimes all it takes is one person standing up for something...
The sad thing is that now you will all have a very negative opinion of rugby - and rightly so when you see the song.

Oh ffs, we have no grand opinion on rugby based on this. We don't even have an opinion Georgia Tech based on one shitty frat.

I played rugby in high school. My opinion of the sport is unchanged.
You said yourself that you were ready for flames when you posted, and honestly, all things considered, the flaming you have received has been pretty tame.
It is really weird that you have conceded that the lyrics are problematic and promoting of rape culture, that you likely hurt a sexual assault victim by singing them, and that you don't support the message, but you can't acknowledge this is a negative part of your college experience.
Jesus H Christ on a cracker. Team bonding? Are you kidding me with this shit? You know what we did for team bonding in college? We took the bag out of boxes of wine and smuggled them on to the team buses in our swim bags, then proceeded to drink out of our bags on the bus rides home from meets. Among other things that NEVER included singing about rape, abortion, necrophelia or any of this other shit.
After this I don't think I want my child participating in any college sports, rugby or otherwise. Because what kind of absolute brainwashing must you go through if you can read that song and go "Totes cool. We all did it. Herp de derp. Go rugby!"
It's done in a call and response kind of way, so they take turns singing out the verses and then the group chimes in with the chorus.
Call and response. Think critically-- they do this in college in addition to rugby and rape songs-- about what that is saying. Call and response. They are being called on to do these things, and they validate the call by responding. This is how the culture of violence continues.
