Louisiana lawmakers have advanced a bill that would abolish abortion in the state, grant constitutional rights to "all unborn children from the moment of fertilization" and classify abortion as a homicide crime.
…
It appears to permit the prosecution of anyone who has an abortion or performs an abortion on homicide charges, opponents of the bill said.
"What this bill does is to specifically amend the crime of homicide and the crime of criminal battery to enable the state to charge people, including the pregnant person - the pregnant mother - at any stage of gestation," Ellie Schilling, a Louisiana lawyer who represents reproductive health care providers, said during Wednesday's committee hearing.
The bill's text says the state should enforce the law "without regard to the opinions and judgments of the Supreme Court of the United States" on abortion, which Schilling said "would completely annihilate" the Supreme Court's overriding authority.
ACLU of Louisiana advocacy director Chris Kaiser said the measure also would criminalize in vitro fertilization and various forms of birth control by defining a fertilized egg before implantation as a person. In a statement on Thursday, he called the bill "barbaric."

Has anyone saved that fantastic response about abortion rights that focused on the loss of a woman’s agency over herself and the slippery slope it creates? It was posted many many many MANY years ago (maybe even at the bad place?) and I can’t remember who wrote it initially, but that logic always resonated with me, even more than relying on tragic situations where abortion is necessary.

It was here and it was swimbikepuke who posted it. I also loved her explanation of personhood.
All I can think of when I see this topic is where do these idiot politicians and judges plan to go when one of their own family members needs this medical procedure? Canada? Mexico?

They will go to the doctors they know. This was how it was before Roe and this is how it will be. They will always be able to get what they want. Whiteness, money, power, position--- that's all they need and they have it.

That's rich. Asking the doctor to break the laws they created.

These people (and by extension, the people who serve them like their doctors) will always remain above the law.

Yep. There was usually a loophole for mental health, and all it required was $$$$. Or they fudged threat to health.
The only moral abortion is your own (or your daughter's niece's son's girlfriend's).

I think most of them are not someone their daughters will go to for help. And their girlfriends shouldn't have gotten pregnant.
I used to think that packing the court was debasing ourselves to the level of the MAGA-crowd, pulling from their gross playbook; my attitude was some last-ditch adherence some moral code of conduct, that "our side" wasn't bending historical institutions until they are unrecognizable. I realize now that that ship has sailed. No more. Gloves are off, pack the shit out of it.
A question: if the Supreme Court is able to reverse itself, what's the point of the highest court in the land? It seems like this issue never should have been left to the Supreme Court, it should have been codified in law a long time ago. Why was it not handled that way (knowing now that the SC can indeed reverse itself)? I understand (now) that it has happened before, but why is that a thing? And to know that if they go after 14A, that all kinds of marriages, the education of non-doc kids, etc. etc. etc. is next...fuck these guys. Although, as I write the above, I know that laws can be changed, too, so how the hell do we get out of this circular hellstorm?
While sbp’s personhood argument is great, who is it supposed to convince? The POINT is to control women. The people who say “oh shit that’s a good point” to that are probably already pro-choice. The ones who are pro-life are like, “Umm yeah that sounds great.”

I went to dinner with friends last night and one of them just received a mailing from Planned Parenthood and someone at the post office handwrote “Happy Mother’s Day!” with a smiley face on the envelope. Sooooooo yeah.
I remember this well and get why people would want to recall the post, but sbp deleted all her posts here, so I’m not sure if we should paste it back.
Didn't she delete all her posts her in a tantrum for being called out in a post on intersectional feminism?
I don’t know why she deleted her posts, but I do believe she left the board over a post where she just wasn’t accepting how anyone couldn’t identify with feminism and talked over cookie a lot when cookie got honest with ways she didn’t feel feminism included her. I just know people delete post history over privacy concerns, employer concerns, career publication concerns, getting harassed by people with bags of dicks concerns, etc.

are they sure that was added by the post office? I’ve seen a lot of nonprofit. Marketing around Mother’s Day and I could see an angle about protecting the right to choose if, when, and how you become a mother.
Separately, I wonder which state will be the first to go for Griswold and ban hormonal birth control as part of its abortion ban since it stops implantation.

So..:can women start getting child support at conception? And claim the tax benefits of having a child?

I don't know, but I will say 2 things
1) my 14 year old said "well, I guess I have to factor this in when I start looking at colleges." And, honestly, she's 100% right. I don't want her to be stuck somewhere she can't get an abortion if she needs/wants one. And she should be able to do so without having to come home to involve me if she doesn't want to (I'd fully support her, but if she wants that privacy, she's also entitled to it). 2) she started hormonal birth control pills 2 months ago for HORRENDOUS periods. They have improved her quality of life immensely. So old men and self righteous "christian" women who want to regulate her body can fuck off fully, and entirely.
Our pediatrician sent everyone a statement saying given the current political climate they want all patients and families to know they can receive implanted birth control at their office, and to make an appointment ASAP if it's something they want to consider. Michigan has a law on the books banning abortion, and have a great AG and Gov currently who won't enforce it, but our state legislature is a hot GOP mess (thanks gerrymandering!) and the law likely won't be overturned. So the safety of access still depends on the elections of an AG not to prosecute and governor if Roe is overturned.
Senator Marco Rubio is sending a message to Amazon Inc., The Walt Disney Co., Citigroup Inc. and other U.S. companies that have vowed to pay travel costs for their employees to access abortion services or gender-affirming care for their children: Republicans want to make it more expensive.
The Florida Republican, a potential contender for the GOP nomination in 2024, is proposing legislation that would prevent companies from writing off these costs for their employees and their families. The tax code generally allows companies to deduct their business costs, including employee health coverage and other benefits.
www.thestate.com/news/politics-government/article261038222.html S.C. Gov. Henry McMaster said Tuesday that he is willing to call the Legislature back to Columbia for a special session urging that they pass further abortion restrictions without exceptions in the event Roe v. Wade is overturned by the U.S. Supreme Court. He also said he would sign more restrictive anti-abortion legislation that did not include exceptions, such as rape and incest.

I agree. It absolutely should be something students and families consider when looking at colleges.

Aren't they worried about the slippery slope of requiring Big Corporations to pay more taxes? /s
"Hello babies. Welcome to Earth. It's hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It's round and wet and crowded. On the outside, babies, you've got a hundred years here. There's only one rule that I know of, babies-"God damn it, you've got to be kind.”

I’m concerned about how this will affect IVF patients in that state. I recognize many of us are past that phase in life.
