Although they are still early in the alphabet, there are now 6 Republican votes for "Other", so Jordan has lost again. I wonder if and when they'll go the McHenry pro tem speaker route.

Why am I so annoyed and entertained at the same time?!
Because it’s fun watching him lose but then realizing he could win a future round and an insurrectionist would be second in line to the POTUS. Or, if he just keeps losing somehow the next frontrunner will be worse.
Well, I was hoping five of them would say eff it and vote for Jeffries, but I can't imagine any of them being willing to do that when there are people this unhinged already who would absolutely lose it if they did.
No third vote for Jordan for now, he's still the designee but they're moving on to expanding McHenry's authority.
"After two failed votes, Republicans had made clear the conservative firebrand didn’t have enough support to win the speaker’s gavel. With House functions at a standstill, lawmakers will now move forward with a proposal to expand the powers of the acting speaker."
Says that D's are discussing voting for a moderate R candidate. I'm curious about the politics behind this. I mean, I agree that it's bad that we don't have a functional government, but it also seems bad to "reward" bad actors for their temper tantrum by helping them out of their mess. Could they get concessions by supporting someone moderate that could make it worth it?

Ok, this is absolutely f*cking petty, and I am here for it:
Seeking to contrast the unity of House Democrats behind Minority Leader Rep. Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) and the splintered Republican Conference, the Democratic National Committee’s “War Room” emailed to reporters what they called the Republican “Plan to End Conference Chaos, Govern Responsibly.”

I suppose if the rule stays in place that any one person can call for a vote of no-confidence (or whatever the official terminology is), I suppose the threat of Democrats bringing that to the table could keep the speaker open to working with them.

TBH, I find the possibility of Jordan as speaker more frightening, abhorrent and potentially destabilizing than continuing to let the Rs flail or worse, give in that someone like him is the only option to run the House. I am encouraged to see that fewer people voted for Jordan in the latest round, but I do not trust that he wouldn't eventually wear down the holdouts if he kept putting himself forward.
If the Ds can find someone who passes for a moderate R that they can work with (because let's be honest, there aren't many or maybe any who are actual moderates), I honestly don't care as much about concessions as I do about NOT having someone who is an insurrectionist and conspiracy theorist in the speakership. That's a fucking low bar, but it is clear at this point that the GOP is so in thrall to that component of their party that those among them who still have a connection to democracy and reality cannot, by themselves, put forward and successfully put in place a candidate who is NOT those things--for the speakership or frankly, for the presidency and increasingly, most other positions.
I haven’t had time to look for any news articles or references, but a local talk news radio show this morning was talking about Jordan’s ties to a university wrestling scandal with pending lawsuits.
And I haven’t had a chance to read all the posted articles, but I’d they give additional power to the pro-tem speaker so they can get back to governing, how does that work going forward? Like they just give up and move on? Is there a timeframe for them to revisit this, etc?

The media should constantly be reminding people of this and that he's an insurrectionist. Fuck off, Gym
I’m so confused. Yesterday it was no going to have a third vote, make the interim guy have more power. And I just logged on to the post and saw there was a third vote and he lost by more than the previous 2. time to catchup.

Victims are saying he and other University officials knew about the Ohio State team doctor who is accused of sexually abusing at least 177 men over an 18-year period from 1979 to 1997. The accusations of abuse involved athletes from at least 16 sports including wrestling, hockey and swimming, at on and off campus health clinics. The Dr committed suicide years ago.

Maybe he's hoping the death threats would work in his favor.

Yeah, this is why his nickname is Gym. He's disgusting.

“make the interim guy have more power” - The tricky thing with THAT is that the only vote, by law (or rules or whatever), that the interim guy is allowed to call for is … the vote for Speaker. So, any rule change in the power of the interim speaker would require a vote … and they have no one who can call for that vote because they have no duly elected speaker …

Ooooo. That makes sense. I admit to note reading the full article I saw yesterday. Only the first couple paragraphs.

Usually I can think of a few different paths of where certain political decisions or non-decisions can lead to, but I'm at a loss with this. I truly have no idea of what could happen next.
