Conference Chair Elise Stefanik (R-N.Y.) said the latest House speaker candidates are: Rep. Byron Donalds (Fla.); Charles J. “Chuck” Fleischmann (Tenn.); Mark Green (Tenn.); Kevin Hern (Okla.); Mike Johnson (La.); and Roger Williams (Tex.)

They all know it’s a career ruining job. There’s no way to win in that position. Voting in a deplorable would be a nightmare for everyone and a “moderate” R will be destroyed by the deplorables in their own party if they try to work with Ds or do anything to benefit the American people (I think they are all deplorable and there are no moderates left but it’s a spectrum).
Joy Reid on MSNBC reported that Kevin McCarthy proposed that he become speaker and Jordan be assistant speaker. Because they have such a great track re it’s. WTF??
Rep. Mike Johnson (R-La.) was elected the Republican speaker nominee Tuesday in an internal vote by the GOP conference during a dramatic day in which Rep. Tom Emmer (R-Minn.) won a nomination vote but later dropped out. Johnson, 51, is the fourth Republican speaker pick since the ouster of Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.). “The intention is to go to the House floor tomorrow and make this official,” Johnson told reporters after the vote, though it remains unclear if he has the 217 votes he needs. Here’s what to know • The full House is scheduled to reconvene at noon Wednesday. “We have some folks absent and I’ll be working with them tonight,” Johnson said of getting his bid to 217. • Emmer dropped out after it became clear that he could not attract a majority vote on the full House floor because of Republican holdouts in the narrowly divided chamber.

Seems like Johnson has a good chance of becoming Speaker. Ken Buck says he will support him despite Johnson being the main architect of the “stolen election” nonsense. Make it make sense.

I don’t get it either. This is why I feel like Emmer was a better option than Johnson.
I wonder what happened in the party behind closed doors that led to unanimous support for Johnson. I don't know what to expect, but it can't be anything good.

So far the consensus is that all the other assholes were either too “moderate” (lolololol) or just weren’t very well-liked personality-wise. I guess Johnson is the first guy who threw his name into the mix that was just…there and no one had strong feelings about him either way. But still, it’s so stupid.

The bar is so low Dante had to create a few new levels.
I’d put it at like 99.9% honestly. Whatever deals Johnson made to get to a unanimous yes on that speaker vote are bad news bears.
I’ll say it again: I’d rather have this far right nutbag that people at least acknowledge is terrible than the really not meaningfully different Emmer who people tried to pretend was a moderate. Is it good for Democracy and a functioning government? Nope. But neither is continuing to move the goalpost on what’s considered moderate in the GOP caucus so far to the right that it goes off the field.
But yeah, I’m not pretending it's good. I do think there is a chance that we may get some accountability blowback on the GOP if this whole thing goes the way I anticipate it to (assuming anyone remembers any of this by Nov 2024.)

Welp, hopefully I get this job that I applied for, because if they do shut the government down, having no household income right before the holidays is not an attractive prospect.

…No one really knows how the parties get to "Yes" The pieces that are sacrificed in every game of chess…

I really hope this isn't as bad as I have it in my head. I had on CBS news tonight and they showed a clip of Gantz saying that today they elected "MAGA Mike Johnson" as speaker of the house and the hardliners won.

Thanks for sharing this. I wouldn’t say it makes me feel any better, per se, but you are correct that the whole R party just admitted, unanimously, that they are a lunatic extreme party. Again. No equivocation.

When he was at the podium after, Boebert practically had her boobs in his breast pocket she was so close. Those MAGAts love this dude. It's disgusting.
Yes, he's awful. There's no republican left who isn't, but he's degrees more awful than many.
He really is. I think Jordan would have been worse given his wrestling/abuse issues. It is very concerning that everyone in the party is ok with normalizing all of this. I have no faith he will do the right thing in future elections.
How weird is it that fellow Congresspersons NEED TO GOOGLE ONE OF THEIR OWN in order to vote them into the position that PUTS THEM 2ND IN LINE FOR THE PRESIDENCY?? Our government is so damn broken.

They probably thought that since he has no name recognition their voting of a treasonous asshole would go unnoticed
I feel like I’m in a 3rd-branch of government game of “would you rather?”.
“Would you rather die of thirst in a desert or on a hill in the forest covered in fire ants… because thirst is horrifically painful but so are fire ants …”
