Usually I can think of a few different paths of where certain political decisions or non-decisions can lead to, but I'm at a loss with this. I truly have no idea of what could happen next.
I knew the Rs were fucked as soon as the vote went through. There's no way they can herd the cats well enough to vote for one of their own. They've also made their platforms so that they can't capitulate and work on a bipartisan solution. It's truly amazing what happens when the Ds stop propping up the system.

So at what point should the Democrats step in and suggest a moderate R that might be able to be elected speaker with Dem help? Are there even any? Is that even a good idea? There is no way five Rs could be convinced to vote for Jeffries is there.
Dems don't have to clean up this mess. It's up to the Rs to come to the Ds.
After Jordan's exit, several potential candidates emerged. Those who are considering running are Reps. Mike Johnson, of Louisiana; Tom Emmer, of Minnesota; Pete Sessions, Jodey Arrington and Roger Williams, all of Texas. Reps. Austin Scott, of Georgia, and Byron Donalds, of Florida, also announced bids.

Is there a point where that's like saying I don't have to wash the water bottles sitting on the counter? It's up to my husband to clean his own damn water bottles when he's the one who made them dirty?
In the meantime they're growing things and I also would like to have a clean water bottle to use and a clean counter.

I can look this up my damn self - but can anybody indulge my laziness and give a quick crazy/not so crazy or at least Insurrectionist/not insurrectionist rundown of this list?
Watching that little slime ball from Ohio be humiliated as the loser we all know him to be, was just as great as I expected. Being a Trump ass kisser didn’t help him.
Threatening people is also a tactic the GOP might want to reconsider. Idiots. And then there’s the pettiness of kicking their own, like Buck, out his office. What a goat rodeo.

because it feels like that.
I think it depends on what you’re willing to give up for that clean water bottle and clean counter.
Unlike the dishes, it’s something that requires a true trade-off. I will not trade my civil rights for a functioning government when not doing that is an option, and it is still an option. No one should be forced to make that choice.

Right, that's kind of the question I'm asking. When does it stop being an option? I honestly have no idea. But it feels like at some point we really need a damn clean water bottle? I know it's a lame analogy, but it feels like we're playing chicken and I don't know what the actual head on collision looks like here. (to introduce another metaphor)

The Buck thing is wild. I wonder how many more are sitting in offices they were given for free or at a good deal because the owners are donors.

Byron Donalds is one of the most deplorable of the deplorables so definitely not him. He’s right on par with Gym Jordan IMO.

I mean, my civil rights are not on the table for me no matter what the stakes are. I’ll choose the other option every time. Whether it’s an option depends on how much you care about that and the other things that are at stake. What you (general you) are willing to concede to maintain a certain vision of democracy.
Obviously many people are much more interested in starting the trade now. Probably related in a lot of ways to how this vision of democracy has been working out for folks. I will take the revolution first.

I think the Rs are counting on this happening, honestly. And instead the dems have remained in lockstep against it, which I think is good. The republicans have made their bed by welcoming these extremists into their party, so they need to fix their own house before they come knocking on ours.
Yes, I want a functioning government and think this is scary as fuck, but I also want it to be crystal clear to the general public how dysfunctional the current Republican Party is.

He was the only one on this list I had actually heard of so I guess I rightfully assumed he’s the most deplorable of this group of deplorables?

The Democrats always are accused of never putting America first despite this shit always being caused by the GOP. This is not something Democrats need to do anything to fix, IMO. The Republicans have the majority and this isn’t a Democrat problem anyway. They can fix this on their own but I’d rather they keep showing that they’ve depended on the Ds for too long to fix their messes and help make them look like they can govern.

And lord knows the marginalized have known long enough that Democrats have and will throw them/us under the bus to maintain the status quo, because it’s happened again and again.
Is this the time they won’t do that? Probably not, but it would feel less shitty if people didn’t start clamoring for it when we are barely out of the gate. The pundits are just salivating.

Emmer is useless. People complain about him constantly but still vote for him anyway 🙄 I can't remember off the top of my head his involvement in Jan 6 but he's 100% Trumper. He was also the majority whip recently, or still is, and I believe was when the first speaker circus happened so clearly he did well.. lol.

I don’t care if what is growing in this water bottle starts to talk to me. It’s sitting on the counter and I’ll just start talking back to it.

Tom Emmer is an absolute tool. He has Michele Bachmann's old seat. He's sort of insurrectionist-lite. He signed on to the amicus brief in Texas v Pennsylvania contesting election results, but as far as I know he wasn't actively involved in anything J6.

I would say the same of Austin Scott. He contested the 2020 election results at first but backtracked after 1/6. He also wants federal bans on abortion and same sex marriage. He's from the deep south/central part of my state and despite being a career politician hasn't done enough to really be a household name. Still dangerous and not someone who should be speaker.

I'm kind of surprised MTG hasn't made a bid.
Yeah, I saw him on CNN and he’s no good. Unfortunately none of the palatable ones will run because they know they have no shot.
The only Democrat back room deals I want to see are getting a handful of Republicans to defect and go independent, dragging control of the House away from the GOP.

I just looked at all of the members running for Speaker, and only two voted to certify the 2020 election. Tom Emmer and Austin Scott. Not saying either of them are good, but I believe upholding Democracy is of the utmost importance so I hope one of them gets elected. Probably not, but one can hope.

2/9?! That's so fucked up. Something like 65% voted against it, so I'm not entirely surprised, but 2/9!!!

That is really depressing.
It really is! If I was this bad at my federal job I wouldn’t have it anymore!! And I’m so glad they passed a 6 week CR so they could spend the 1st 3 weeks F-ing around not doing anything because it’s not like anything is going on that we need them to address in the US or the world!!🤬
The Republican conference is expected to meet Monday evening to hear from this new crop of candidates seeking the gavel. The group is expected to vote as early as Tuesday on its next speaker-designate.
