a true gift.
this line though - man, that's some depressing shit:
Only two — Majority Whip Tom Emmer (Minn.) and Rep. Austin Scott (Ga.) — didn’t vote to reject those electors. Which is not to say that they weren’t sympathetic to Trump’s efforts to overturn the election; Emmer, for example, offered his support for a lawsuit that would have even more broadly upended the election results. Scott was included on The Washington Post’s list of election deniers running in 2022.

I appreciate their side note here:
"What you can see is that, while Jordan was one of the most ideologically extreme members of the caucus, most of the nine new contenders for the position sit closer to the middle of the caucus. (That “of the caucus” is critically important here, of course; the House Republican caucus is very conservative, so sitting closer to its middle is a bit like enjoying a balmy 85-degree day in a month of triple-digit temperatures.)"
Maybe it was just a function of how many were in the mix, but I feel like needing five rounds of voting to nominate Emmer doesn't bode well for his chances in the floor vote.

I heard on NPR this morning that they were doing a thing where the person with the least votes would drop out each round until they ended up with one. So it was always going to take that many votes.

So Emmer doesn’t have the votes. The reporting is there’s at least 10 holdouts, he can only lose four. Honestly, I think some of the Democrats should vote for him. He’s by far the most palatable option and the alternatives are scary.

Nope, if the democrats are going to cave to vote for anyone, it needs to be someone who wasn't an election denier, which Emmer was. But really, this is the Republicans mess to sort out and the democrats absolutely shouldn't solve it for them.

It does mean he went in with lukewarm support at best. There are plenty he's going to be too moderate for.

not sure what your definition of palatable is, but a shit sandwich is still a shit sandwich even if has piece of baloney on top. My water bottle based thoughts above aside...he's pretty awful.
From my lil bit of research since we got the lsit of folks running - he's anti women's healthcare rights (generally anti everyone's healthcare rights, but specifically people who have uteruses too), anti LGBTQ rights, anti fair labor practices, pro eliminating corporate taxes, and supported the texas lawsuit to nullify the election results, so even if he wasn't literally marchign on the capitol, he was still in favor of overturning the election. And he's not like...quietly for any of those things or just going with the pack. he's sponsoring bills on those topics.
"Though Rep. Tom Emmer (R-Minn.) has received enough support to be speaker designate, Republicans are remaining in the room and airing their grievances about him directly, according to multiple Republicans familiar with the proceedings."

He voted to certify the election and voted to codify gay marriage. In fact, some people are voting against him because he voted to codify. Listen, is he good? No. But no Republican is good and the alternatives are far, far worse.
I don’t know, I was all on the Republicans have to figure this out themselves train, but I’m really scared about the alternatives.

He also supported a state constitutional amendment to ban gay marriage here and introduced a bill to define marriage as between a man and a woman.

This is an alternative that we should be scared about too.

This is a genuinely serious question.... Are there any moderate, palatable republicans out there in the house? I have to assume there's 1 or 2 but I can't think of any.

Brian Fitzpatrick (PA-01) is ok I think. In the grand scheme. But I think he's also probably seen as not a real republican. I mean...the official party platform is pretty unpalatable right now. So it's going to be slim ass pickings.

I live in Minnesota.
Tom Emmer is hot fucking garbage. For the record, the district he represents elected Michele Batshitcrazy Bachmann until she decided to step down because she was being investigated for being a thief and a liar and unfortunately not for being batshit crazy.

And we have at least one R calling him too liberal. I am not sure where we go from here.

“Rep. Jim Banks (R-Ind.) says he plans to vote against the GOP’s latest nominee for speaker, Rep. Tom Emmer (R-Minn.). “The left-flank of our conference blocked Speaker-designee Jim Jordan then nominated the single most liberal member of leadership,” he wrote in a statement, adding: “They are holding our conference hostage and pushing Republicans to betray our voters and abandon our promises. … I won’t go along with it.””

That’s a really really really poor characterization of his stance on LGBTQ rights. Jesus, we need to be better than this.

Seriously... Go to wikipedia and look him up. Go to the section of his political stances. They're abhorrent. Anyone who thinks he's too liberal is kidding themselves.
Good. I’m deeply uninterested in watching the Overton window get dragged even further right with any pretense that this guy is a moderate. I simply do not have the energy.

I have no doubt he is garbage. He is obviously conservative. However, I am not one of the people who get to vote on this. Some of the people who do get to vote on this think he is too liberal. Trump is calling him a RINO.
I am definitely concerned with who the come up with next. There seem to be a decent number of members in Congress who want someone even worse. Ideally, at a minimum it would be someone who agreed to certify the 2020 election results, but I am not even sure we can get that.
"Former president Donald Trump took direct aim at Emmer as he was trying to convert holdouts. In a social media post, Trump called Emmer a RINO — Republican in name only — and “totally out-of-touch with Republican Voters.”"
"Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) said Majority Whip Tom Emmer’s (R-Minn.) voting record was what turned her against him, echoing other hard-right lawmakers’ criticisms that Emmer was not sufficiently conservative."

They really don't get that their extremism created this whole mess in the first place.
They don’t! In the same NPR segment, some Republican lawmaker (I missed who) said the Dems have some blame for “allowing” the 8 hard-liners to do this. AYFKM?!

Which goes right back to, the Rs only function if they have the Dems propping them up.
