H has been working for a fully remote business for almost 7 years- there is no headquarters and they have employees all over the globe. For them the salary is the salary- doesn’t matter where you live, but they are very competitive and probably more CA/NY based considering that’s where the higher ups are. If we wanted to take this salary and move somewhere with a way lower col we totally could, but we don’t want to. It could open up a lot of doors for people to move to more rural settings and still work in high paying jobs if they want to- especially if they want to be closer to family, home town, etc. I wonder how it will change the political landscape over time.
ME TOO.
This is one of those residuals that I'm hoping would work in favor of the left. lol. Even if people moved just right outside a major city for COL purposes, some of those counties are very red areas.
I might have misspoke. If you are planning on leaving the state you can apply, but every job posting states- residents of CO are not eligible to apply. It’s because they don’t want to post the information required (salary, benefits, and bonus) now legally required by law here.
Huh. What are they hiding?
According to the lawsuit I posted in the OP, it's mostly just burdensome to the HR staff?
To me, it would just make more sense to jump on the "trend" now, publish all your jobs with salary ranges, and then be in front of it all.
Well, you’re making a few assumptions around workers being more or less interchangeable, but that’s not necessarily true.
H is a doctor and actually makes less living where we do. He gets job ads all the time for positions “short three-hour flight to major metros!” offering $350k+. Not a lot of people want to live in the middle of nowhere, especially highly-skilled individuals and young people (particularly if they don’t have ties to the area).
Someone in New York might command more money than someone in Chicago, but I question the premise that companies in NY are going to be replacing each New Yorker with three people from Kansas with the same skill set. And the truth is, many large companies have already done that where they can (I know my company, for instance, has many of its back office roles concentrated in one of our cheaper COL locations.)
First, many of the assumptions made in my OP are from conversations in my work circles. Everyone in HR is trying to guess what is going to happen and we truly don't know how it will eventually shake out.
Growing up in a small, rural town, I know it flows both ways. They even had a campaign once to try and bring some grads back home after college because there was such a shortage of skilled workers. I don't think it worked well.
This is interesting and one of many reasons that I’m not sure 100% WFH is going to be as prolific post-pandemic as many think/hope it will.
Yeah, it will be easier for larger businesses who already have established nexus in the states employees want to work remotely from. Less so for smaller business that haven't established nexus in many or any other states.
Will this hurt some of those smaller businesses, too? Even if I take a pay cut going from LA to say.. Wichita Falls, TX, my company is probably going to be far more competitive in salary than a local business or one that solely operates in Texas.
Plus side- I bring more buying power into the community. But that also has a list of other consequences like driving up property values for those that can afford it, hurting the low income workers in the area.

I've seen an uptick in discussions in my work circles and on SM about virtual salaries being based on a location's cost of living.
This is now being brought up quite a bit for those in Colorado with the new pay equity act. Companies that have virtual roles are opting to not post these roles for Colorado based candidates because they'd have to put a salary range. One excuse brought up frequently from these companies is that their ranges are based on COL in the candidate's city, so to avoid issues, they just won't take CO candidates.
Of course, this hurts the Colorado workforce because they are now being cut out of tons of job opportunities, but the bigger question being asked is: Why are there differences in pay for the same job in another state? With a large set of the white collar/tech jobs going to virtual (full or partial) after the pandemic, people are asking why their work is considered less valuable if they live in Nevada vs. Wyoming vs. California. Why would a company pay for someone in a HCOL area if they could get 2-3 people for the same amount in a LCOL, essentially hurting the communities in big cities like SF or NYC who helped to build some of these tech giants?
Just another thing to consider in this new world of WFH.
Anyone can look up my salary. I like knowing that I’m paid the exact same as men with my same experience doing my same job, and I like knowing that my minority colleagues make the same. Obviously bias is involved in promotion rates so it’s not a perfect system.
I like that anyone can look up military pay because many would be SHOCKED as what our junior enlisted members are paid. Many qualify for food stamps. Look up an E-3 with 4 years of service, and imagine living on that with a spouse and child. As a leader of junior enlisted members, it’s important for me to understand how little they make. It’s important for me to understand how much our new lieutenants make (look up O-1 with 0 years) so I can advise them on how that $650 car payment is going to affect their budget (yes, this is part of my job) or so I can understand the impact of them having to drop $400 on a new uniform.
(FYI- edited out your personal stuff just in case)
I once had a shop chief find out how much we (E1-4) made for a drill weekend and he was baffled as to why we even showed up
It's also important to note a few things when talking about these pay scales outside of the military: 1- Military spouses are 95-98% women and many of them cannot work at their education level because of constant moving/childcare issues/etc. so that base pay is truly HHI for a large amount of the military. 2- While much has been done in the last 10 years, the officer ranks are still largely white and male. So when someone says the military is one of the most diverse workforces in the US, know that most of that diversity sits in the enlisted, lower ranks.
But overall, I do think the military pay scale system really does help with equity across ranks. I knew the guy turning wrenches next to me wasn't making $$$ more money for the same job.
My current company does have pay bands and it is helpful. They also regularly look at differences in those bands IRT diversity and make adjustments if there is a glaring issue.

While I agree that making salaries public might help make them more fair over time, I'd probably start with requiring companies to publish salary ranges with the role, like Colorado just did.
Now, it's not perfect and has caused our team a lot of headaches, but I think we should start at the source. It also allows candidates to decide on if it's worth applying to.
For taxes, I wouldn't be okay with publishing the actual forms. I might be down with public knowledge on percent of taxes paid or something simple. Ex: Joe Schmoe, 10% Fed, 10% State and local
Rebel Wilson has lost a bunch of weight, and I'm wondering how Hollywood will deal with it. The comments on her SM have been, well, as expected.
It'll probably be similar to Adele, but moreso because her character is always the chubby funny girl.
I hated seeing all the SM posts around Adele. Like, good for her if that's what she wanted, but it was hurtful to see so many comments focusing just on her weight and her talent being tossed to the side.

When telling people I'm from New Mexico, it's either met with confusion or immediately with some reference to Albuquerque and Breaking Bad. I usually say I grew up just north of El Paso, TX in New Mexico. It at least gives people a geographical area without explaining that NM is very large.

We went in early September a few years ago. Weather was very Colorado to me, but add in random, freezing drizzle. Lots of layers. On our golden circle tour, we went on a large tour bus. I enjoyed some aspects of it, but I'd have rather driven ourselves around mostly due to weather. We didn't get to stay at places like Gulfoss for very long even though the sun was out and it was gorgeous, but we were stuck outside in some super cold drizzle and wind that same morning.
We lucked out for things in the city because we knew someone through our soccer team's supporters group who showed us around. He lived downtown and would just show up to our door with a few beers to walk around with while we explored the city. It was pretty awesome.
Look at your arrival time, by the way. We arrived at like 5am and had nothing to do. We were exhausted by the time we could check into our Airbnb.

I think with everything in the US, we are such an "all or nothing" culture- sex, booze, food, etc. and it ties back to the puritanical BS. You are either a good person that can abstain from sins or you're not. There's no in between.
From my experience, my alcohol intake was related to my ties to diet culture. Before I got into frequent dieting, I'd say my alcohol intake was pretty level or lower than most Americans in their 20s. It wasn't until I started the restricting yo-yo with food that I noticed I had an unhealthy relationship with alcohol. I'd have my food "cheat days" that would also mean having a few more drinks because it was a cheat day! Or if I made an unhealthy food choice that day, I'd say screw it and eat/drink whatever for the rest of the evening. That got even worse when I started traveling a lot with work and stopping into airline lounges on my way home. The food and drinks were free and it felt like vacation, so why not?
Once I started getting into intuitive eating, I noticed my alcohol intake also changed drastically. We gave up alcohol for lent in 2020, which got us into the new NA beers coming out. I often reach for a good NA beer to drink with dinner. And if I want the fully leaded version, I don't feel guilty about having one or two. I don't feel the need to finish the wine bottle so it's not a temptation the next day. It was mind blowing to me how closely they were tied together.
I've mostly given up drinking at home, so when I had dinner with friends the other night and had one glass of wine, I got so sleepy as soon as I got home. I want to socially drink now that I can be social again, but my tolerance is shot now and it's just not a priority for me to try to build it back up. BUT, while I've come to enjoy non-alcoholic beers and wines at home when I crave the taste but not the effects, I don't think they're hugely popular at bars and so I guess I'll just be limited to boring soda when I go out. :/
I have noticed more of those options. Our wine bar has non-alcoholic versions and non-alcoholic drinks... they have this IPA called Run Wild that is really good. The only problem is that most menu non-alcoholic drinks are almost too sweet IMO. I love lavender and basil and such, but why substitute simple syrup in a drink instead of some bitters or soda.
This is off-topic, but for those who like social events with a glass (let's be honest that a cup of something - even non-alcoholic - is comforting when socializing), check out Zero Proof and Good Drinks - both are great recipe books for non-alcoholic drinks. I try to have one fun one at every party, but I grew up with an addict sister who has been sober since she was 16ish and a lot of parties her friends and family who are also non-drinkers. It's nice to put some effort into having a non-alcoholic option that is fun and shows that you support your friends and family who do avoid alcohol or just don't feel like having a drink that day.
I love Athletic Brewing's offerings and have substituted some NA beers into my rotation. There are so many good options coming out and even microbreweries experimenting for their tap houses. I hope it catches on and it's not a fad.
Millenials/Gen Z also have aging parents where the cost of living just has not kept up with retirement plans. Add in 401k losses in 2008 for many now trying to retire.
Personally, I do want kids. But I also have to factor in taking care of my aging parents and possibly my SIL and BIL down the road. As of now, the only way my parents will be okay is if they live with us. We are currently building a house behind our current home, with plans of it being completed a little before my mom retires. But that is a huge undertaking that most people don't have the luxury of doing.
My SIL is a little over 15 years older than me and they are child free. Both of them are in good health but who knows what the future holds for us? We recently had a casual talk with them about this, as H's uncle just passed away and no one knows anything about who was left in charge or what that even looks like. Thankfully, we are all pretty tight knit and they've even offered to help with my parents when the time comes. They don't expect us to be responsible for them, but it's not like we wouldn't help if it came down to it.
It's something that weighs on us constantly and time isn't on our side at this point. And like I said, we are extremely lucky and blessed to even have the option of caring for my parents. How many people are in our same predicament that are opting out of having kids that do want them? If the US wants the birth rate to climb, a hell of a lot is going to need to change. I don't see that happening any time soon.
So interesting... why do you feel that you have to take care of your parents vs. have them figure it out when they retire? Is this because of the support and sacrifices they made to get you into your career or what? I don’t see this as common with my millennial/GenZ friends who have moved further from their parents and want more physical and financial boundaries (even with some parents who are in much lower tax brackets than their children are now).
Partially that, but there is no way I'd be able to live my life comfortably while my parents suffered at no fault of their own. They worked hard, paid into the system, lived modestly most of their lives.. and for what? So they can decide on paying for their meds or their electricity?
And I see it quite a bit with my friends. Currently, one of our best friends has put his life on hold to take care of his mom. He lucked out that his job allowed him to work remotely, but he had to put everything in Denver on pause to move to TN to take care of her. He is struggling mentally and financially. His mom is an educated, middle class woman who worked 20+ years at the same university, retired, and planned on staying home to work on her garden. And then her Parkinson's became too much to handle. They don't have the funds to put her in a decent retirement home or pay for a night nurse. So he had to move in. He's in his early 40s and did want kids, but he doesn't see that happening now.
I have two other friends who are currently remodeling their homes to accommodate their parents living with them down the road. Both of them are pregnant and know they can only afford one kid at this point, though one of them did want 2-3.
I also think the pandemic scared quite a few people about senior homes and many of my friends are really reconsidering what their futures look like.

Are they heavy or with a lot of clots? I rarely get heavy periods but massive clots on days 2-3. Tampons and pads don't do a dang thing for those because it's not an absorption issue, so a cup might be her best bet. They make disposable cups, too. If it's just heavy, period underwear with tampons would probably be better while at school, then a cup at home until she gauges how many times she needs to dump it.
Figuring out your period needs is such a frustrating job. And it's a JOB sometimes. Big hugs to you and her!

I was planning on buying a few of the at home rapid tests just in case since work is offering to pay a portion of it. My allergies have been awful this season but I haven't really been out anywhere that I'd be in contact with anyone and I WFH. I'd feel more comfortable seeing my parents or meeting up with different groups of people knowing that I'm not asymptomatic.
I am in TX and have had various contractors do indoor and outdoor work the past year. I saw some work where people should have been wearing masks and eye protection to avoid breathing in dust or having sawdust get in their eyes, but they weren't wearing anything. I can understand runs on PPE could have been a cause, but not on eye wear and you can use shirts or bandanas to help cover your face. I honestly wonder if face coverings became political even for those that normally wear them.
Most recently I have had many estimates from contractors for indoor work and I immediately judge them if they don't have a mask on. I gave a carpet guy a paper mask today and I think he said he hadn't worn one in months. Of course he wore it below his nose the whole time.
I love my eyes so much that I wear safety goggles when doing electrical work or using strong cleaners (like lime away).
All this while I freak out about the new TX Brazos variant.
Note: None of my comments are directed at people that cannot wear a mask for medical or similar reasons.
I’m also having a bunch of contractors out for quotes. One guy whined that I asked him to wear a mask. Another took it off the minute they stepped outside even though I kept mine on. So annoying. I’m giving the work to the company that wore an N95 the whole time. It’s as good a reason to pick a contractor as any in these times.
Last summer, we had a contractor out for a bid and even after we told him multiple times, he kept pulling his mask below his nose inside. I kicked him out. I was raging. He finished his conversation with DH outside but as soon as he left, I just said "nope" and we never contacted him. I'm sure he knows why he didn't get the job.
We also had a "Veterans for Biden" sign outside, so I wonder if he was doing it purposely. He was quite smug the whole time and did a few things that pissed me off like dismissing my questions or turning to my dad for confirmation, even though my parents have nothing to do with the project. We went with a woman who is absolutely amazing and is strict about masks with her crew
I was the same way. What is this sick feeling? lol.
My timeline was similar- 4pm shot, woke up tired but okay, hit a wall around noon. I had a low grade fever between 5-10pm, normal temp at 10:30pm and appetite came back raging around 11pm. I feel great today.
Oh man. It got bad. Fever rose to 102 and basically didn't leave my bed until 8pm when I was finally starving.
Ouch! I only got up to 100.4 and I felt awful. I hope you're feeling better today and that was the worst of it!!
Got my 2nd shot yesterday around 3pm. Woke up today feeling great. But now my skin hurts all over. I going to stop working at 12 and lay in bed. Worth it but ugh it has been so long since I have been sick, I forgot how sucky it is lol.

Ok- I am not kidding about this 😂 I woke up from my nap with a fever and a craving for some cake. Then my FB had an ad for cheesecake. About 20 min. later, I remembered the Pfizer cheesecake craving thing someone mentioned here. I guess my 5G was activated. Hahaha.
Walgreens (and some other pharmacies) were initially scheduling Pfizer vaccinations 4 weeks apart instead of 3, because it was logistically easier for them to have Pfizer/Moderna on the same schedule. But they were recently told to stop doing that and to stick to the 3 week schedule for Pfizer. At the time I booked my Walgreens appointment, my second Pfizer shot had been scheduled for 4 weeks out, but Walgreens is now saying that people who had second appointments booked 4 weeks out can try to reschedule their appointment earlier, once they hit day 20.
Well, Walgreens' website makes it IMPOSSIBLE to reschedule an existing appointment because it only searches in like a 2 mile radius from where you are - even though I can see there are a ton of other available/earlier appointments online just slightly further away. It won't let me select a different location for an appointment on day 21, even though I know the appointments exist. Even creating a new online account didn't work, because it managed to find me in the system under my name/birthday anyway and then just told me "no, you can't make a new appointment, you have to edit your existing one." Except your system won't let me do that!
So now I've booked my second shot on day 21 at a completely different pharmacy chain 45 minutes away, and I'll have to cancel the Walgreens appointment. Ugh. I feel kind of bad for "taking up space in the system" and then cancelling my appointment, but it's really amazing that such a major pharmacy chain has such a shitty online system. Everything about this entire process has made me really feel for people who *aren't* tech savvy and don't have hours of time to waste figuring all of this crap out.
And yes, I'm aware I could have just waited the extra week to get my second shot. But I have some specific family stuff going on next month that I really wanted to be fully vaccinated for in order to feel comfortable participating. So like I said, this is a very petty dumb vent.
I didn't even try rescheduling because I was worried it would somehow screw up my appointment, but yeah.. it's frustrating. I just had my 2nd shot yesterday. Other than the 4 week debacle, I feel like Walgreens did a pretty good job. I received a ton of reminders and could check the app to see my appointment.
amberlyrose , basically, from the very start, she's done some of the following: - voted against same sex marriage - worked for a company that supported the Burma dictatorship - supported(supports) the death penalty - In 2017, Priti was fired from her position as International Development Secretary (IDS) for conducting 14 off-the-book meetings with Israeli ministers and business people. She didn’t notify the PM at the time about these meetings causing her to lose the job. (and this is why it's egregious that she's gotten the position that she has). - despite being the daughter of immigrants, she supports the most right wing immigration policies and is completely anti-Semitic.
So, yeah, she's awful and we've known she was going to continue being awful.
I remember these two points, especially the last one. One of my British friends referred to her as Nikki Haley, but worse.
The UK gov't have been accused (and doing) a lot of shady things, particularly around not tendering for good deals and just giving contracts to friends or lobbyists. This is illegal but, of course, our gov't is either denying or getting in the way of investigations. It's getting worse and worse. The most recent one involves a lot of different players, including David Cameron (past Prime Minister), our current Chancellor (an MP wannabe toady) and a civil servant who was able to work at the place (which should not happen). This is blowing up in the news over here and just points to how awful our current gov't is.
In addition (more horribleness of the gov't), we have Priti Patel, our Home Secretary, who put in place detention policies for immigration centers which breach human rights rules. She is also being investigated due to deaths in those immigration centers (overloading the centers despite them being Covid hotspots, for example).
So, looks like our conservative gov't is still trying to out asshole/fascist the US conservative gov't.
When my AT&T app isn't working on my TV, I'll throw on the SkyNews Live app in the morning.
It was fascinating to see the Cameron and Patel news take more time than Prince Philip, who is getting a lot of time here on the US morning programs. I feel like Cameron went under the radar compared to loud Boris, but it's now all bubbling out. It was hard to follow along so I need to dig more into both stories. If I remember right, people were upset with Patel as Home Secretary from day one?
The partygoers, at times dressed in formal wear from a political event they'd just left, mingled and shared drugs like cocaine and ecstasy. Some had sex.
I want to know this part. This is just the beginning of all of this mess. I don't think it'll be top GOP but I'm guessing we'll see a few Fox talking heads or other big conservative personalities.
