I've never watched their show/s (?) but read threads here. This makes me lol:
'“Like other families, ours too has experienced the joys and heartbreaks of life, just in a very public format[.]"'
Like, um, whose choice was that, dumbass? You don't just get to collect the money and then turn it off, unless you are able to stay out of the spotlight, which they aren't, because $$.

Yeah, they've actively sought the public limelight since before they started having kids.
I was raised southern Baptist, H catholic. While it was nothing like this conservative Christian life, there were people of my church that were. My dad was atheist and never let the lads that raised me get me too deep. But, so far, I’ve had a couple times of reciting by heart what they are saying. H gives me this 🤨 look. Like Amy’s baptism scene, there were certain phrases we always said during the dunking, and they just came out of my mouth. I get a 🤨. Hey Catholic, you have your phrases, too.
Yes. I actually started watching it earlier and my DH, who has never watched the Duggars, was all “Stop! I want to watch that too!” (He was cooking dinner). I was surprised but he really likes cult stuff so I guess it makes sense.

I was raised super conservative evangelical and while I haven't watched the Duggars much, I've heard lots of those beliefs growing up. We were not allowed to wear pants to church unless it was really cold AND my dad said it was okay. Some people in our church disapproved of ballet because the costumes were too revealing. It was...a lot.
Tangential, but I was fascinated my this article in the post this week. Homeschooled kids that send their kids to public school, and how that affected them. I looked hard, but couldn’t find a gift link on the page. Sorry.

Yes. We actually just watched the first episode. I keep getting skeeved out.
I was never a fan of the show and I’m deeply anti-religion, but I want to watch it because I think the kind of religious fanaticism the Duggars are a part of is both disturbing and dangerous. I know Josh Duggar is in jail, but I’m interested to see how IBLP and TLC are being held accountable for the role they have played in molestation and other predatory behavior. I also think it’s the same people who made the LulaRoe documentary that was really well done.

I read this yesterday and thought it was really good. I have a friend who has fallen into a church cult just like the one in the article so she's homeschooling too.

I've followed then for a long while, even before free jinger. I have a thing for reading about cults.
My main reason this go around was to show my current people about the cult, to show is not a benign fundamentalist. They just don't realize it. And while I know I'll fail, I have to try to at least prevent them from misguided evangelism. They are still if the mindset "it brings place and comfort so what's the harm" and I'll do what I can in this small world to change that mentality
Just finished #2. Teaser for #3 is that we find out IBLP is, shockingly, like the Scientology SeaOrg, with forced labor to teens, punishment rooms, etc.

If it’s a critical look, then I’m intrigued. I don’t want to give them any more money, but you can’t deny that they became a strange cultural obsession for many years.
In one way, this world is so far from my reality, I can’t help but be fascinated, especially given the outsized influence evangelicals have on politics in many red areas of the country. But also, it’s not so removed, beliefs-wise, from the fringe sects of Judaism (which I’m more familiar with) so it’s fascinating from that lens too.

Yes. I never really watched the various series, but I do remember watching the original special back when there were only 15 kids or something. I have a family member who is obsessed with them (in a people-watching way, not an agree with them way) and they have kept me up to date on the big stories over the years.
Finished it. And, well, that was an evening of anthropological fascination. Whew. Lots of heavy stuff - the abuse of women and children in that cult, while not surprising, it was the first I’d actually heard of confirmation.
And confirmation that the dangers of this movement can not be underestimated.

I swear southern Baptist guilt is a thing. I’m no longer a practicing Christian or even religious at all. I still feel guilt! I even bust out in hymns when phrases are said. I can’t help it!
I watched it. One of the things that stood out to me was how great they are at playing the "long game".
Essentially, how they deliberately get involved in all levels of politics. It's scary.
I think what the Duggars did to their children, particularly their daughters is beyond horrible. I can't imagine how it felt to have them protect their oldest son instead of the daughters.

Apparently Jim Bob swindled his kids out of the money. He wrote the contract with TLC so the money went to the “family” and kept it that way even when they were adults. Before Jill’s wedding day he tricked her into signing on for 5 more years and then never gave her any money. So I guess I feel like if the $$$ from this helps Jill and her sisters, then I feel okay about that.
