Pick almost any Catholic thing and some protestant sect also does it. But I can think of nothing all protestant denominations do that isn't shared by Catholicism. Protestant churches run from liberal organizations led by trans lesbians, to fundie evangelical sects. They can fall all over the spectrum on any point in theology, some don't even require you to believe in Jesus.
There are major differences in beliefs between Catholics and Protestants. That why there are Protestants, because Martin Luther didn't like what was going on in the Catholic church. The biggest one I know of is that Catholics require not just belief in Jesus for salvation, but also the performance of good works. This difference leads many Baptists to believe that Catholics are not even Christian. Another pretty big difference is the role of the Pope, which no other denomination has. The number of sacraments, transubstantiation in Communion, these are all fundamental differences. Agree that you can find just about any kind of belief in one Protestant sect or another, but there are significant differences between Catholics and Protestants.
She said the difference between protestant groups is splitting hairs. That is what I disagree with. Baptists don't consider most Protestants "Christian" either. That isn't something they reserve for Catholics.
If you start with the idea that all protestant groups comes from Luther, you've already dropped the Anglican/Episcopal churches (with saints, some of the same sacraments, an emphasis on good works and bishops - albeit married gay ones). Other, later groups have much bigger differences - the myriad of specific rules and beliefs of the Mormon faith. Or Jehovah's witnesses. Or Christian Scientists. Or Unitarian Universalists who don't necessarily believe in God at all.
Suggesting that the difference between not believing in god at all and believing humans can attain deification is "splitting hairs" is a very Catholic oriented perspective.
(A few other major differences between protestant faiths: the believe in predestination, original sin, the existence of hell, the existence of a devil, the existence of heaven, whether there is a numerical limit on heaven, whether Jesus was a deity, the belief in the trinity, whether belief alone leads to salvation, whether you can be "saved" - by good works/belief/baptism, etc.)
candreco , The differences amongst the Protestant churches are often splitting hairs, but there are major, fundamental differences between Catholics and Protestants.
? ? ?
Um. no.

To be really frank, I don't think my DD or their mutual friend are "cool" enough for this girl (and/or maybe just her mom?). My DD has said that she felt this girl just uses her because we have cool stuff to do at our house and good snacks. DD hates when she comes over because she is destructive, and usually will suggest that they walk to the park or go to someone else's house if the girl shows up to play. DD will not be broken up or even surprised if they don't stay close long-term. Kids drift apart in 6/7/8 grade naturally anyway, but the need to tell me that they won't stay friends, out of nowhere, more than once, while they are still actively friendly, just feels so bizarre.
I had a neighbor actively pushing our kids apart. It was so obnoxious. Like you, I wasn't trying to force the friendship. We were definitely not cool enough for the mom (and frankly I don't think she thinks her own daughter is cool enough for her). They moved to a new house and it was such a relief. We ran into them at the library last weekend and I got to see the mom pick on her kid about food choices. Poor kid.
In your position, I probably couldn't keep myself from a rueful chuckle and saying "Goodness, no. We want them to focus on healthy, mutual friendships, not forced proximity."
I have a request, can the shooting thread subject titles please include the city/state or general location, instead of just "another school shooting"?
I get a pit in my stomach thinking it could be near me, that the post will be the first I've heard of it, and I start to panic.
My son is in preschool, not in an elementary school, but some evil fuck could easily choose his daycare next. This is a worry I have (along with most parents).
Changed the title. As someone who also has kids in school, I completely relate and understand and apologize for not clarifying in the title.
Could you also add a date to the title? I remember a previous thread popped up weeks later because of an update. I thought it was a new shooting in the same location rather than just an update.
How much money are you personally willing to donate to the team if they use your venmo and the numbers aren't coming out right?
I've found families who try to do venmo for our troops cookie sales often end up feeling like the numbers don't add up - but of course they are still accountable for the cost of the cookies. If you are willing to chip in an extra $25 or whatever if the tally marks don't square, go for it.
Otherwise, just let people know in advance it's cash only. People will find a way to make it work.
(I've found we get a lot of pushback about cash only cookie sales. But the second we pull out the GS app to help them pay electronically, they find it slow and pull out cash/go get cash anyways. lol.)
this in part explains the conservative near-obsession with the birth rate. See Russia, Hungary, and Melon Musk. America being worse, though, because they know they are actively and without remorse killing young people but want fodder for capitalism.
@ sort of, and maybe off-topic
I was in a discussion about WTF is the end game of forced birth, and this was pretty much the consensus. They need an expendable work force.
it goes back to the evangelical obsession with birthing, adopting and indoctrinating as many kids as they can. When they hear ‘unwanted pregnancy’ they see opportunity to evangelize and add another kid for their own ever expanding families.
Just saw this in my feed. I really believe the majority are against this, but we sit and are quiet and the sick minority who want this are loud and organizing.
churches can build all the libraries they want. Christian scientists have been doing it for years. They have nothing to do with public libraries and no one goes there for a reason.
Have you looked at changing your body wash/ soap? I don’t remember what I was using a few years ago, but it wasn’t as thorough as I wanted so I had to switch things up.
What? the "when others are waiting" means if nobody else wants it, you can keep going. Not that the 30 minute clock starts when someone starts waiting. That would be insane.
It's so weird to me that Lagunitas has a national presence. I know they've moved out to bigger places like Petaluma (and now Chicago??? surreal). But I still think of them as local.
Lol, I feel like I’ve seen lagunitas around for a looong time!! ETA: like I don’t remember finding it for the first time or anything! In general the craft beer game has dramatically improved in the past 15yrs!
It's named for the teeny, tiny town where it started. So although it is absolutely everywhere, the name makes it sound small to me. It's as if it were called 'Mofongo's neighbor's house' but was everywhere.
I've never found one I liked TBH. They all taste kind of "cooked" to me. FWIW, I am also a beer drinker who loves IPAs. I was very excited to try ABC's "Run Wild" and bought a 6 pack to share with 3 beer-loving friends when we went to an Indian byob. None of us liked or could finish it. Thank God I had some Green City with me as well. I don't get the rave reviews.
When I am not drinking alcohol, I drink unflavored seltzer mostly. I also like an Arnold Palmer or juice mixed with seltzer.
Lagunitas na ipa is good.

I have no time for "they brought this on themselves by voting for these legislators."
Even if this applies to some, there is still the 1 in 3 voters who voted for the opposition. Not every pregnant person can vote. Not everyone is a citizen. Not everyone is franchised. Not everyone is over age 18.
And as pixy said, none of the babies brought this on.
The problem with whole states having their healthcare system collapse is that those people don't just stop seeking care. ...
Yes.
The other problem is some do stop seeking care. And instead of getting timely preventative interventions, when care happens, it is coming after thing become dire. (and some of that delayed care is also going out of state).
I think other glitches are more due to how our brains work than any outside influence. Deja Vu for example is just a memory snag and you are basically remembering the thing you just did.
I find the idea that I am stuck in an neverending time loop from which there is no escape less terrifying than the idea that my memory is on the fritz.
Your memory isn't on the fritz - it just isn't a video recording. All memory shifts, develops and curates. Yes, there are occasional hiccups, but that is true of every body system. Just like you might trip occasionally but usually walk or run smoothly, your brain has it's moments.
Our museum's planetarium won't even let five year olds in. I think you have to be 8. I thought it was because 5 years might freak out. But maybe it's because they've had too many people squabble in line.
When these moments happen I say we have elves. Obviously I don’t think we have elves in the house, but it allows me to let go of those moments until the item shows up someplace unexpected or doesn’t.
When she thinks about her high school years she is going to remember how much fun she had with theatre and activities.
I don’t know. I really overextended myself a few times as a kid and my memories of those times aren’t the fun parts but of the overwhelming feeling of stress and that I was a failure when I couldn’t easily balance it all. It had a lasting negative effect on my self esteem because I thought I should be able to handle it all.
Are the older kids as interested in the lion King? I feel like that is a cusp activity. Some things are obviously intended for kids, and you wouldn't worry about whether to include them. Other things like a family vacation, are appealing to all. Lion King tickets feel like they could go either way. IF they are expected to attend, then I'd pay their tickets.
My mother's rule was always if you are sick enough to be home, then you should take the day to rest. No TV, no phone time, no leisure reading, Completing missed school work or homework was okay, but otherwise we were expected to rest.
No reading? That is tough, lol.
She was hard core. Anything that could pass as leisure time was out. Being unconscious or incapacitated was acceptable. lol.
She didn't ask to miss school this morning, but I think we may bail on school Thursday AM after a dr appt and go out to breakfast.
That sounds like a really nice compromise
We are in the opposite position. DD is sleeping right now because she also got ragged and sick. She's having a little "no screens revival" day (at my suggestion - she wasn't looking good last night).
In our house, putting away screens to rest is a general policy, not a punishment. She even helped me remember when I had COVID. lol.
