My mom has taught for over 20 years and has still had issues with the PLF program. She was TWO years away from being done almost 10 years ago and they screwed something up and said the last 8 years didn't count or something. I've never seen her more devastated. My parents just assume they are going to die with student loan debt at this point.
I got great toning results with it but had to stop because it created back pain for me. But so many of my friends love it, I think it’s specific to my scoliosis. I definitely find it super challenging
I found with PureBarre, the C sit thing against the wall created a ton of back pain, so I would just skip it. I've never seen it done at any other barre studio.
IRT Peloton, I feel like they move way too quickly between movements to get much out of it.
I love barre and pilates workouts and I feel like the best I looked is when I did heavy lifting and supplemented with barre.
Definitely Stitch Fix - I'm petite (5'0") and need that sizing, otherwise sleeves/pants/dresses are way too long. I like that you can customize your style. So far they have been pretty spot on with what they've sent to me.
Do you have Plato's Closet or Franchesca's? Those might be good places to look as well.
Same with the stitchfix petite need. Petite and curvy are hard to shop for!
OP- I also lean toward boho/neutral colors for my clothes, especially for work. It's why fall is my favorite season!
Right before Covid, I found some great dress pants at target. They are cropped for everyone else, but fit like regular tapered skinny for me. My inseam is usually between 26-27", so these hit right at my ankle. I paired them mostly with some heeled mules and crew neck sweaters. The ones I have are from .A New Day line, similar to these:
Like pp's have said, there are good reasons for the policy, even though it clearly sucks when they prevent someone driven to join from serving. Do you think she'd consider civil service? I'm a DoD civilian, and the vast majority of the command I work for are civilian employees, not active duty. There are all manner of career choices within DoD for civilians.
Certainly, reading these comments has brought some clarity. I do understand the policy.
I think she would consider that for her future, absolutely. But in the meantime, she's had her heart set on ROTC for years.
It really sucks, especially when your heart is set on it. I had two people in my ROTC class that were daughters of high ranking officers. ROTC was their only goal in college. One ended up getting diagnosed with a rare heart condition our junior year. The other wanted to be a pilot (and had put $$$ into private flight school) but was told she was too short by 1/2 inch. It was awful to see how gutted they were, but they've both gone on to do some really amazing things.
It was explained to me years ago that the medication issue was to to make sure a person was not in special danger if they could not access needed medication in a combat or POW situation.
Our schedules could also change at any minute, so depending on the medication, it could affect your performance at work. I ended up getting an IUD while I was in because I couldn't manage taking my BC pill consistently due to crazy shift changes. I can't imagine dealing with my ADHD meds with that schedule.
It sucks, but when your job is based on 24/7 readiness, it's hard to accommodate everything, so blanket policies happen. I wish the military would break health/fitness standards out based on jobs, though.
Maybe dieting advice/tips in a thread where the OP mentions disordered eating is not the most helpful, even when they did ask for advice. Just my opinion though.
Thanks. I don’t mind it, but can already feel my mind racing thinking about this stuff. At this point I’m not going to do anything without talking to dietician first, when I can find one. And probably a counselor.
Big hugs. I think those are some great first steps.

First- that dude is a jerk. 110%.
It took me a long time to process how much the military screwed over my body image, fitness, and overall health. I would receive the same advice from my superiors right before PRTs, which led to the same yo-yo effect. Get fit/skinny right before a test, injure myself somehow from overtraining/undereating, gain it back. I would have legit panic attacks at the idea of running because it was my worst score every time. Add in some undiagnosed ADHD and RSD to round it out and it would take me days to mentally recover from fitness related things.
Anyway, I know you want to get that support and guidance from your flight doc, but I'd suggest finding a registered dietician that works with disordered eating. Let the flight Dr. know you "took his advice" by looking on the internet and found someone to support your plan. Have him note it in your records. Your PRT is important for your job, but your health and wellbeing is more important.
And know you are not the only woman to leave a military Dr. to just sit in the car and cry for awhile. I've been there and I'm so sorry you have to deal with it right now. If you want to PM me, I'm here.

It just makes me so mad that these young women and children put their lives out there to represent a country that let them down at the highest of levels.
I am trying to be a person who doesn't give over to despair, but damn. Short of (natural) death, what is going to stop him?
I'm going to make a side point: this is why the characterization of anyone who would join the military as a war mongering gun nut is dangerous. It's inaccurate and it creates a cultural perception that will, eventually, become self-reinforcing. We need thoughtful people because this is serious work that requires careful thought. And I'm in no way a fan of the military industrial complex or jingoism, so don't come at me, bro.
While the military is majority R, it is NOT majority Trumpers. The Rs are more the John McCain folks who value integrity, service, humility….all the stuff Trump doesn’t have.
Among the younger generation in the military (I’d say at this point my age and younger — I’m 40, so that’s a big chunk of the military) there is a much higher, and climbing, number of liberals. Many military values overlap considerably with “liberal” values (what we used to consider “American” values before the Right abandoned them, like freedom, equality for all Americans, the right to vote, etc).
I completely agree with your assessment that the military needs sharp minds and critical thinkers who understand the complexity of the national security landscape. We need level-headed leaders, not sycophants. The trust and confidence of the American people (and our allies abroad) aren’t assured, and we have to protect them at all costs. We absolutely can’t afford the image problem of being an organization of right-wing gun nuts and conspiracy theorists, because those are really NOT the people we want to recruit.
And I’m going to specifically call out liberals here — we need more liberal families to encourage their kids to consider joining the military. It’s not right for everyone, and thats okay. But we need to ensure people with “liberal” (formerly “American”) values are in our ranks.
In all ranks.
**PDQ!** Two anecdotal stories- 1. In ROTC, there were only 3 of us that were openly liberal. Me, DH, and one other guy. We attended a Hispanic serving institution in a blue/dark purple state. Since then, many of our classmates have become more left leaning, but it was tough to take a stance as the only woman in my detachment, so I very rarely spoke up. 2. In the spring, H had to get his troops vaccinated. The two shops with liberal shop chiefs had 80-90% vax. rate. The one with a vocal antivax chief was less than 20%. Leadership matters, especially at the senior enlisted ranks.

I hope our future kids take after us and have terrible hand/eye coordination after reading that. Though my parents did spend tons of money on cheer and gymnastics, but both my sister and I were into it, so it worked for our family dynamic.
I looked into it, but backed out when I found out that the only way it works is via the $40/mo subscription. You can’t get on it and just row, or at least that’s my understanding. If I’m wrong, let me know as that was the reason I backed out. I hated the idea of payin* 4 figures for a rower that requires a $500/year subscription to work.
We just bought a rower off FB marketplace and use RowHouse GO and Apple Fitness for classes. I can't stomach the $40/month subscription for connected classes either.

My cousin actually just called me crying about this earlier today. Along with small town politics, her HS senior texted her to say that she was done with sports. She doesn't enjoy it and the bullying by the coaches at school made it so bad that she quit everything. My cousin never pushed them to get involved in it, but the girls are gifted athletes so they put everything into it- weekends, travel teams, etc. She wishes she had never done it at this point because it has made her daughter hate school and sports.
Sending her this piece later this week when she has time to digest it all.
We are mostly remote workers who travel. We have to order the rapid tests and then expense them. I have 6 tests in my cupboard right now just in case I have to go into the office.
interesting. i know some places/schools/employers won't accept the at home but maybe that will change. they seem to have come a long way in a short amount of time!
We have to do it in front of a proctor online. I had to do my first one on Wednesday, actually. It then gets uploaded into our system from the proctor site.
i am admittedly curious about the logistics for employers.
are they expected to have someone doing rapids on site? what about remote workers? what about remote workers who travel?
three are just... so many variables here. as an HR lady this is instantly where my mind goes. the nonsense that ensued when my company began offering a vaccine incentive were wild. i cannot imagine how this is going to play out for employers at large.

My company is mandating vaccines for all US employees and gave a date when unvaccinated will be unemployed immediately if their records are not updated. This is huge and the email we received was not sugarcoated. <3
My H works for this company (we figured this out last year on Instagram lol!) and he was excited to get this email. He actually has a person his team that he works closely with (figuratively speaking - they are all remote) who is refusing to get the vax because.....reasons......and he thinks he is going to quit and try to find a different job. OK bye!
I went on the anonymous social app and people are up in arms because they didn’t do the initial survey to “stand their ground”. Now they’ll be fired and won’t get those promotions and bonuses anyway

Apparently I wasn't. Had a pretty epic breakdown on Tuesday, which resulted in me taking my chili mac lunch to the car, driving to the park, and eating it while crying.
Truthfully, the last two months were spending money and drinking more than usual, and the overspending part is what started my breakdown. We decided to have a mostly sober, no-spend September.
We put together a workout space in our climate controlled shed last weekend. This weekend, we are going to clear out old clothes and other crap in the basement to donate to local places helping refugees.
I'm in an MSW program right now and honestly meeting with my cohort and discussing these topics has been extremely helpful. Obviously so much of what is going is relevant to our education, so that helps.
I was in school for my MPA during the 2016 election. I seriously do not think I would've coped as well without my classmates and professors.

If there is a spin bike at your gym, sign up for the app and try it a few times there to see if you like the classes. You can also try the tread classes at that time too.
I’m on it. And I’ve reached out to a few PR friends because Jeremy Jojola used to work in this market to see if any are still connected to him personally.
I totally forgot about Jeremy but I have some friends from our home state that know him too. I'll try to get them on it as well.
Did i miss a checkin on this? mofongo ; @neworleans; everyone else? You ok?
I watched some of the evacuation footage and got the sweats thinking about Rita in 2005. The news looks bad in some areas, ok in others. How are y'all (if you have power).
Hey thanks! I posted in ML Ida thread and randoms. I am ok, but it’s all fucked up. I’m still in Jackson in a nice hotel:)
Glad you're safe!! Any idea when you think you'll start heading back?
My sister said it took 8 hrs from central city to mobile. She's holed up in a hotel in Tallahassee with her H and dog.

I miss her. I remember her telling me to always let my mom braid my hair, no matter how old I was, because she missed having her mom do the same. So every time I go home, I ask my mom to braid it at least once during the trip. It's something so small and a thing most adult women wouldn't ask for, but I make a point to do it.
I'm about 35 miles from NOLA. As of now we are staying. I'm hoping I don't regret this. I stayed for Katrina and it was one of the biggest mistakes in my life. UGHHHHHHHHHHHHH We do have a generator and our neighborhood is a low risk for flooding but damn we didn't need this right now.
Where are you? I’m in Jefferson Parish about a mile from the Orleans border. I’m having big Katrina flashbacks.
My sister is in NOLA and they plan to leave tomorrow afternoon when her H gets off work. I'm hoping that is not too late for them. This is their.. 3rd? hurricane season and we grew up in the desert.

I definitely got the cleaning thing from my mom. Very few people see my house in any state of disarray thanks to her. DH did finally get tired of cleaning right before a trip, so he told me just to schedule our regular person to come while we're gone.
Both of my parents despise clutter and so do I. We don't do knick knacks or wall art that doesn't have some type of sentimental meaning to us. The only exception is fall/holiday decor. I regularly purge closets and storage bins because I can't stand it. DH's mom was opposite and kept EVERYTHING. When she passed away, cleaning everything out was a nightmare. I've slowly moved him over to my end but it's taken awhile.

I'm from New Mexico and I make it a point to visit Allsup's for a chimichanga. I'd put it in my top 10 favorite foods. The station by my parents is another brand but they have a burrito stand inside and that counts as a full meal for us. Outside of NM, I never considered gas station food as meals.
