The showed this on the nightly news last night (ABC news with David Muir) and the main guy actually said something to the effect of where did the money go? Did it go to cigarettes or alcohol? It reminded me of the no skittles for poor people rhetoric.
Rent, you asshole. Utilities. Food at home. Clothes for school. And the occasional Skittle.
My granddaughter is STILL hanging in there. Mom's 5 days past due (expected dd was 7/17). To put this into "OMG" levels, she was 3 cm and effaced (at I don't recall) when I was at her baby shower more than a month ago. Poor thing. To expand on the Poor Thing, we've been giving her a hard time since she told us she'd been having contractions and was dilating last month. "Gonna have it while I'm here at the shower? Hope I don't have to turn around once we're on the road." Then when she hadn't had it "You going for Auntie N's birthday on 7/2, right?" When that didn't happen "It's a July 4 baby!" Guess not. Then "YOU ARE NOT HAVING THAT KID ON JULY 6! My sister already has a granddaughter that was born on her (50th) birthday and she can't have my granddaughter too! Keep them legs closed today!" And (whew, no July 6 grandkid) it became "Had that kid yet? You're going to hold out until daddy's birthday on the 23rd now? She's going to share her birthday with daddy? He'll love that because he hates celebrating *his* birthday. lol." And the kid's still hanging in there. They're likely inducing today. I'm still holding out that she pops out tomorrow, even if it's 12:01 a.m. so she can share her day with her birthday-hating daddy.
The article I saw earlier quoted him as doubling down and saying "Well it got their attention, didn't it?"
Yeah, screw that. So, threatening to remove children has become the new bludgeon for the government. I don't have enough rage for this behavior or this dismissiveness. I've been through the system. Threatening someone with that particular hell over a lunch bill is unacceptable.
There are thirteen observatories on Mauna Kea already. Can they not use the site of one of those observatories for this new one? Fourteen will become fifteen will become...a natural beauty destroyed, covered with observatories like pimples on the surface.
A friend of mine saw Anthony Bourdain when he was out and about in her hometown. They were at a public restaurant that was a semi-closed event or some such (I know I'm getting the back story wrong, but it's close.) They ended up talking. His manager was setting up a private dinner and thought my friend was someone AB knew based on what he saw in the interactions, and so she was able to go into the dinner with the group (she's an avid foodie.) They ended up talking and having an outstanding time (along with one of his cohorts and several dozen others.) She ended up getting the meal and an autographed book and an amazing memory. I've long wished I was her +1 that night.
So basically Bernie is mad that the union is using the media to put pressure on management.
Isn't that basically what happens when unions negotiate?
Maybe next Bernie will hire some Twitter bros as scabs.
Yup. Exactly so. Handbilling, leafletting, media focus... Negotiations may be done behind closed doors, but the push to negotiate is done in broad daylight.
One of my favorites was when DH was negotiating with a Big Box Home Improvement Store which was building several new stores in a strong union town but using out of state non-union workers. The union rented a billboard truck (one of those flatbed trucks with the signs on the back) and drove it from East of Town site down the freeway to South of Town site, through Downtown during lunch hour then back on the freeway to West of Town site, then circling back. The company actually negotiated terms for the truckS to be pulled from service as part of the terms for prevailing wage and local union workers. It was so effective that the company actually thought there were multiple trucks ranging all over the community. They wanted "them" gone because it was giving a poor reflection of the company before it had even opened its first store, and they worried that folks wouldn't come because of the negative publicity.
The guy in a rat costume at various pickets was always fun too. That rat costume made rounds through several unions for picketing during negotiations.
I saw on Twitter recently (probably because of this!) that all of Pete’s staff make at least $15/h.
So do Bernie’s on paper. I’d be curious to see whether this holds for the actual amount of hours worked assuming they are salaried (as most full time campaign staff are.)
It is normal on a campaign to work 60-80+ hours a week so salaries would be for sure higher than typical campaign salaries if the staff were paid a $15 min hourly wage.
But I still hate Bernie and agree he is a hypocrite.
I'm wondering, if the staff is salaried, if they qualify for exempt status. Not all salaried employees do. Many companies, in fact, put employees in salaried positions or claim the employee wrongfully as "management" and pay accordingly, misclassifying them according to FLSA regulations. When I was a legal assistant I was paid salary but classified by law as an hourly employee and not permitted to work over 40 without getting paid overtime for the extra hours. Lots of salaried employees don't know this difference and the employers count on it.
I would laugh if he was paying his secretaries and others a salary and working them extra hours because "you're a salaried employee" when that's totally against the law. And totally what Big Corp does to get away with it, too. Bernie Is Big Business.
It was the first production we took my older granddaughter to. Scared the tights off her when the cats came down the aisle and one sat on the lap of the person a couple seats down and tried to play with her. But she loved it after they stayed on stage.
(And yet my ILs continue to support Trump, with no apparent regard for their US-born Latinx grandkids, never mind their green card-holding Costa Rican son-in-law.)
And for fucking marijuana. You KNOW that if he'd been white... Oh, and your IL's grandkids and son-in-law are American and here legally. They're not one of "those" brown people. (At least that's my Trump-loving mother's argument. Sorry your ILs are related to my bio.) 'MURICA.
I don't care if it's unprofessional. It's adorable and positive messaging. Haters gonna hate. (And this article was a much cuter read than the one I originally saw, so thanks for posting.)
And on another note, The Hate You Give is an awesome Young Adult read. (yes, Tupac related. lol.)
Two sisters, age 8 and 14, read bedtime stories on Facebook so that kids that don't have the privilege are given the opportunity to hear night-time stories.
It was at his own request so I suppose good for him rather than them.
From my understanding, he was retired when he'd heard the case; he was recalled from retirement to help hear cases and clear the docket. He's now permanently retired and won't be recalled in the future. Good news no matter how it happened.
What the heck is this world coming to? The life of an amazing woman who had obviously given chances and opportunity to many in her community, killed over rent owed to her. Tragic.
And there are "sensory issues" thrown in for those who deal with them (seams and fabric vs. reduction of visual stimulation).
This is a legitimate concern and not at all entitled. The principal should reach out to the school occupational therapist to come up with a workable solution that meets the needs of all kids.
This one I give all due credit and is a fair argument. The entitled reference is the "They didn't ask me. They didn't ask my kids. They just made a rule and I don't like it. My kids are individuals and want to show their individuality" (or "I want to live vicariously through my kids and their clothing choices." lol.) I am not unfamiliar with the needs of kids on the spectrum. The discussion is both-sided. Those with physically sensory issues that can only wear certain fabrics, have no seams, etc. are one side of the coin. Since the school doesn't have a restriction as to where the uniforms are purchased, just color criteria, the uniforms can be purchased to accommodate any special needs. It could also be addressed in a 504 or IEP. The other side of the coin is those with visual sensory issues who would actually thrive in a setting of uniformity, with fewer colors and patterns to disturb them visually.
ETA: this is a brand new school, opening in the fall. This discussion has only been the past few months, after the principal was hired, school was being staffed and administration and rules getting set up. This is a whole new ballgame, not just a new principal.
Also, I'll mention that juries do not believe women. So even if you get an office and DA on board with charging a case, juries are generally stupid and fall for the same 'what was she wearing??? why didn't she just leave?' and other nonsense that the general public does. On top of that the criminal justice process is really difficult for victims even when you can get a conviction.
This. See also: Christine Blasey-Ford (and "the setup of Brett Kavanaugh by Dr. Ford, a Democratic activist..." among other claims.) And re: the comment by wambam on War. On. Women see also Trump's abortion ban becomes effective. My head is on fire today.
Mine would wear the same clothes to play in every.damn.day and leave all the other stuff stuffed in the back or bottom of their dresser drawers. By the end of the week I'd have two uniform pants, two or three uniform tops and one pair of jeans and a couple t-shirts, plus underwear and a shitton of unmated socks if I left it up to them.
So still not less laundry assuming they’re changing clothes daily, as they naturally should be. even if there’s no increase, I’m not seeing how uniforms would lead to less laundry.
Because at least with my girls, they won't want to repeat the same jeans for a week and tops for at least two weeks for school. But at home, they'll lounge around in the same darn outfit after school for weeks on end if I'd let them get away with it. Uniforms mean that I only have to wash two pairs of pants and two tops (or however many I buy) and the repetitively worn after-school clothes. It's not so much the laundry as the angst around it. And my fault for buying so...much...stuff. lol.
I am so sorry msmerymac. And that's what these assholes don't get. It's really not about the fetus no matter how they try to spin it. It's about controlling women, particularly women without economic means that give them access to alternatives.
I would LOVE LOVE LOVE uniforms here. I have too many fucking clothes to wash, it is horrible.
How would uniforms reduce your laundry? Everyone still wears one outfit every day that gets dirty and needs washing, no? In fact, I could see many kids not wearing their uniform after school and changing into regular clothes, this doubling laundry (and purchase costs).

The uniform is simply Navy or White polo and Khaki bottoms. Buy It Where You Can Find It. Otherwise, there is no real restriction. I can get on board with that type of policy. It's for this elementary (the third in the district taking up uniforms) and isn't district-wide.
I think the big problem is that the other two are low-income and the principal is coming from that background in education for pretty much her entire career, and we're "THE" UMC area of the district. "They" are starting to move into some of the other elementary schools, what with apartments (gasp!) being built here and other affordable (relatively speaking) housing.
I'm not averse to school uniforms. If only because I've been low income and I've seen the kids in the other schools, whose parents struggle to afford things we purchase without a second thought. I'm all for two pairs of pants (more if you can afford them and hate laundry) and a couple shirts to get you by.
This is still obvious in schools with or without uniforms - mostly in appropriate shoes and outerwear. Uniforms probably won't fix that. Our PE teachers routinely buy new running/tennis shoes out of their own pocket to help with this and during winter it's obvious who doesn't own boots, snow pants, hat/gloves, snow jackets after about a week of the first big snow.
I'm involved with an organization that provides shoes for students in need in schools. They have shoe lockers in the schools in two neighboring districts. New shoes only and many of them are brand shoes, which helps reduce the stigma as well. If the school doesn't have the proper size they call the org to resupply them. I go to Fred Meyer and Big 5 fairly regularly (as do others) to purchase name brand shoes for the lockers. I can get $60-75 shoes for $15-20 and few would know the difference. This also helps the students who would be otherwise challenged.
Sadly, there's never a cure. At least at the elementary level it's not so obvious with the labels. Unicorn tennis shoes are unicorn tennis shoes, and if you have flames you're awesome no matter the manufacturer.
I 100% believe he will lose the Dem nod and run as an independent.
A bunch of states have "sore loser" laws, which prevent you from appearing on one party's primary ballot, then running in the general as an independent in the same election cycle.
I hope every one of them is a swing state where having him on the ballot would be detrimental to Dems.

We have a new elementary school opening next year. We're a fairly affluent part of our county/school district (one of the fastest growing areas of the country) with lots of new construction being the foundation of the new elementary The school is very likely going to be very low percentage free/reduced lunch and with an active PTA and family involvement because that's the nature of the beast.
The new principal comes from an elementary school in the northern end of the school district, from a school that has 70-90% free/reduced lunches. In the past two years, her school (and one other) switched to school uniforms. She has been pro-active in their school doing so. It's more affordable for the students to just have a couple pair of pants and a couple easily replaceable shirts to get them through the year; it decreases stigma and bullying; and it promotes inclusivity for all are primary reasons. (Shirts are $7.99 and bottoms are $10.99-14.99 at Macy's, for Pete's sake! That's not including Old Navy, Target, JCPenney, Sears or the plethora of other places you can buy them for dirt cheap.)
She is mandating school uniforms for the new school. Parents are up in arms, from sharing petitions on Facebook, going to the media (television news and local paper) and discussing on the "School Board Facebook Group" (not the school board but parents talking about school board/district issues.)
The arguments are "individuality" vs. "inclusion." And there are "sensory issues" thrown in for those who deal with them (seams and fabric vs. reduction of visual stimulation). There is so much "but they never talked with the parents or the kids" when it was "unilaterally decided without community discussion at all." A LOT of the argument is "we weren't consulted" which seems very entitled.
So, just out of curiosity, where does everybody stand with school uniforms in public schools? (Can we tell where I stand? lol.)
TRIGGER (Death): My baby-sister-by-another-mister's obituary came out today. (She was my younger sister's BFF all through childhood. Her mom was our alternate mother, and she and my sister were "twins" their entire childhood, born a week apart and even looked very much alike when they were younger. They could have been, except for the whole her mother birthed her and my mom birthed my sister thing.) It was a beautiful write-up. Funny coincidence is her sister lives just down the road from me now, two states away and forty years later. By a total coincidence.
@@@ The older grand, the dog and I made it to our local event. We had about 300 show up. It was a really good turnout for our area, I think. Lots of honks and thumbs up from passers-by, relative to the number of coal burners, American muscle and Trump supporters yelling or shaking their heads as they passed us on the way to the (minor league) baseball game. OG wants to make a sign for the dog next time. "I don't care where you're from as long as you pet me." lol.
I found out about it through my local Dems party. I will be attending. I'm also putting it out there again in our local groups as a reminder because too many haven't heard.
I get that. I just think she’ll need national support for her race, and this could easily be rejected by progressives. It’s a tough line to walk, admittedly.
So help me God, if the "progressives" put up some liberal purity test for McGrath to pass and then deem she "fails" I will lose it. JFC. If she has a SMALL chance to beat McConnell anyone who isn't a Trump supporter should be behind her 1000%.
They already are and I'm already rebutting with what a smart message this is and why, courtesy of this board.
I hope to hear that WA isn't releasing photos, particularly if they are limiting the search to those that look a certain way it have a certain sounding type of name. Because you KNOW they are limiting the scope of any search.
Thank you for the poem, NewOrleans I was looking forward to what you found for me and I was not disappointed. (Sorry for the delayed response. I was at the urgent care/emergency room with younger granddaughter today and was distracted. I wasn't ignoring your efforts.)
