How long have you been a member of the H&F community? What initially drew you to this board?
I've been a member here since the old board. I don't remember why I initially started posting, but I'm sure it's because I needed help training for something.
What's your sport/discipline of choice? When and how did you get started doing it?
Swimming. I've been swimming since childhood, but only open water swimming since 2011.
What's the sport/discipline that seems the most challenging to you, and why?
Running, specifically endurance running. I think it requires more mental discipline than most.
If money were no object and a jet showed up on your doorstep in five minutes to take you somewhere fun, where would you go?
New Zealand.
If I hit play on your music device right now, what song would most likely start playing?
Uh, whatever Pandora started with. I keep it on shuffle, so what plays is absolutely random.
Who inspires you? Do you think you are an inspiration to others around you? (let me answer that one for you: YES YOU ARE). How does your involvement in your sport/discipline influence your life and others around you?
When do you usually do your workouts? Is there something that you are missing from your normal routine that you'd like to incorporate?
I normally swim in the morning or, if I'm not working and it's a short swim, mid afternoon. I'd love to have a portable shower, like for camping, to rinse with after lake swims. Sometimes i get itchy and it's a long drive home.
What was your biggest accomplishment this year and how did you celebrate that?
I swam 10 miles. Celebrated with donuts and coffee from Tim Hortons and briefly got detained at the border.
What's the most hilarious thing that's ever happened to you while either working out or racing?
I think R getting dumped out of the kayak in heavy chop was pretty funny. But it didn't technically happen to me, so I'm not sure it that counts.
Why do I always end my survey lists with a why question? Because. Now, give us your goals for 2017 in Haiku format.
I want to help others Host a badass swim race and Have fun doing it
In my experience, people usually have inefficient flip turns for one of two reasons: not using their arms to drive the somersault (and keeping them tucked in), or rolling onto their stomachs before pushing off (instead of while streamlining off the wall). Could you get someone to videotape you? www.instructables.com/id/How-to-do-a-flip-turn/ this series has pretty good pictures of form.
I don't have any swimming buddies yet. But that might be something to look into.
I'm sure my form is definitely off as I get more tired. I feel like it's pretty decent in the beginning of my workout usually. I do use my arms and try not to flip too soon.
I do feel like my problem is related to fatigue. I do the same stuff I've been doing, but it just doesn't work properly.
mrs.jacinthe, I've definitely learned to try to take a breath right before I flip. That has helped me a lot.
You may be breathing too close to the flip, which leads to momentum loss and too much time/effort on the turn proper, which would make you out of breath.
Personally, when I flip, which isn't often, I try to breathe no more than 2-3 pulls before the turn and start breathing again at 2-3 pulls after. Your mileage may vary, though.
If you can't have a coach watch you and make suggestions, I'd suggest recording yourself (or asking the lifeguard to do it) so that you can see where you're taking too much time and or wasting air.

I take as long as I need between sets. Sometimes that's 10 seconds, sometimes it's a minute. It depends on how hard the set was. But yes, take a short rest in there.
Particularly, a new event with a sanctioning body?
I want to start a swim race event near me and I am stuck in the darkest circle of hell. In order to get my bid accepted for a race with USMS, I need a concrete date, etc. In order to get a concrete date with the local recreation area, I need proof of insurance etc, that only comes after sanctioning is granted by USMS. But again, I can't get sanctioning until my bid for a date has been accepted. And I need a concrete date to do that.
HELP. OMG.
this has to be a thing that is surmountable. otherwise how do new events happen? have you tried asking USMS how this is supposed to work? Like, asking a human on the phone. (I'm sorry if the answer to this is DUH YES. I avoid the phone like the plague and just assume everybody else is equally adverse.)
Would the recreation area people let you set a date as a "hold" date, pending final paperwork approval, work through sanctioning, and then finalize on their end? that would be the most logical order to me - that way you know you don't have any local conflicts with other events, you get it sanctioned and then the local people sign off that you've got your ducks in a row.
This is a good idea. I'll call the rec area this afternoon and see what they say.
I will also add that in the beginning of planning my intent had been to get the race courses USATF certified. I ended up dropping that because it was just too much to add to my already full plate. I'm not at all familiar with swimming, but is it possible to have the race witbout sanctioning?
It is, but I'm on the national USMS long distance committee. It would be ... Awkward, at the very least. Lol
Plus, USMS insurance is better than the stuff I could buy individually.

Personally, I breathe every two. I can breathe bilaterally, and unilaterally to both sides. But I find that breathing every two on the right is my happy place for oxygen. If you're running out of air during your flip turns, I'd check form and flip turn "procedure" first - perhaps you're taking your last breath too early or too late. However, it's possible that at that point in the workout, you're running on an oxygen deficit and that's why they get problematic. I think what I'd do for right now is try breathing bilateral for the first 15 laps or so, then switch to unilateral every two and see if the flip turns stay easy or if they get harder regardless.
As regards swimming workouts, I get most of my ideas from the USMS forums, but there are plenty of workouts out there. I'd be happy to return to posting some on a weekly basis if people want it.

Two at the most, because on this cooktop, the damn front/back burners are spaced incorrectly and too close together. So a large pan on either large burner completely obliterates my ability to use the two small burners for anything. I have a 36 inch cooktop and 2 useable burners. Thanks, GE.

Size down. No matter how large the boobage, the girls shouldn't jiggle when you jump. If they do, the suit's not tight enough.
I like TYR suits, personally, but I'll wear anything that fits. I wear a size 12-14 right now, which, in their sizing universe, is generally considered a 38 or 40. I have pretty giant hips. I wear a size 34 suit (unless it's polyester, in which case I wear a 36, because there's not enough stretch to get those bad boys over my ass in a 34. LOL). I could probably squeeze into a 32 and be comfortable, but I don't have any at the moment.
I generally prefer a thin strap, but you might want to experiment with strap widths for sake of figuring out what you find comfortable.

As an admin, I'd appreciate just about anything, but what would mean the most to me, aside from the physical gesture of a gift, is a letter detailing all the nice things he has to say, copied to whoever supervises admins at the company as well as HR. I thrive on recognition of my hard work.
That said, if a cash gift is unworkable, I'd skip anything personal - clothing, accessories, spa/hotel, as those fall under the semi-squicky personal gift category for me. Instead, I'd chose a luxury item from a store where, if she just wanted the equivalent value, it wouldn't be difficult to return/exchange with the gift receipt. Something like this cashmere throw from Williams Sonoma: www.williams-sonoma.com/products/solid-cashmere-throw-spring-tulip/?cm_src=AutoRel

V, you are an amazing human being. Simply amazing. Thank you.
I'd like prayers for my career change to go smoothly (and for me to be successful in the new career). I'd also like prayers for a smooth transition to foster parenting when we complete all the hoops.

Get anything done? Put up your lights or tree? AW stuff here!
I didn't get much done. I dedicated myself to finishing the window "curtain" for the front window (it's a roll-up style blind, actually), and getting it hung:
It looks super easy, but for whatever reason, it took me FOREVER to properly do the runners for the buttonholes. I wish I knew why, because I'd never make that mistake again. Either way, it's finished and I'm happy with it.
It is absolutely gorgeous and I couldn't put it on the tree to get lost, so I hung it on the wall in the kitchen. Literally everyone who has seen it thinks it's amazing, too.

Our next door neighbor has pot plants on his back porch. He's super nice (although he doesn't offer to share, lol) and is very neat and orderly, generally speaking.
Our neighbors across the street are so freaking sweet. They are both in their 80s and are still going strong. The lady likes to play the organ on Saturday nights. The dude was military and it shows. You could eat breakfast off his driveway. They gave us a painting that she did (think Bob-Ross-style) a couple years back as a thank you for helping coordinate their landscaping project through the HOA board. Love them.

I'm done painting the family room. We got new carpet. We went to Ikea and bought some shelves for the entry wall, and assembled them.
WWYD with this light fixture? I'm thinking about taking it down, taping off the copper bits, and spraying it white, then putting it in the dining room over the table. We'd install either a ceiling fan or a new, less dining room-y light.

Went to the doctor this morning for routine follow up. Was complaining of a pulled muscle in my chest, making it hurt to breathe. I think I pulled it while i was painting the family room.
Anyhow, I guess my descriptors of pain were indicative of possible other things, so they ran an ECG. And it was abnormal enough that they're referring me for a full cardiology workup. Apparently the changes I have are indicative of possible CAD and/or neurological ischemia.
So, needless to say, I'm on the no workouts bench for a few weeks. Or more, depending on what cardiology says.
And the PSA: even if you think you're healthy and feel fine, a full workup with ECG is important if you're an athlete. You don't want to become a statistic.
I got up at 3:30 this morning and now I'm drinking coffee before I try to get a wall painted in the new family room. There are no words for how much I hate this wall texture. None. Painting the upper half of a 15x14 room shouldn't require four days and two gallons of paint.
Did you get up at 3:30 specifically to paint. If so, I'm impressed!! I hope it's going well SaveSave
I sure did. I can't explain myself anymore. Who am I?
