I have no idea how I'll feel about pacifiers when we have children, but I know that children who are way over 2 and trying to talk and all with the pacifier in their mouth do bug me. I once heard a parent tell their child to come change out their pacifier with them "because that one doesn't match your outfit". The child - through her pacifier - was able to fully explain why she didn't want to change. Long ass sentences - aka had to be at LEAST 4 years old. That got my side-eye. Instead of switching pacifiers to match the outfit, maybe the mom should've reasoned with her child as to why she shouldn't be using it anymore.
Mine never did that until last night (after I told him off the night before for not putting them in the hamper, he decided to make a big spectacle out of it... sigh...)
It must be because I'm from Amsterdam, but I seriously think those parents are insane. I'm all for tough love, but not for setting your kid up for a massive fine he/she probably won't be able to pay, thus setting him/her up for juve. It's been preoven time and time again that younger people who go to jail/juve for these sort of things usually come out worse then they went in.
Not a parent, but have seen this enough with friends/family members to know that if that'd happen to me/my kid, I'd sit them down for a stern talk. I'd try to figure out why he/she is doing it (peer pressure, curiosity, or something else (it's been proven that pot isn't addictive, but the cigarettes he/she might be adding are, so that's another thing to deal with). Whether it's peer pressure or curiosity, we'll talk about it and then go into the yard to smoke it.
From all my friends family where I've seen this done, in 99 percent of the cases this worked marvelously. Parents allowing you to try it, makes it very un-cool. It also makes you stand above peer pressure, as you can tell your friends you can do it in your own yard. At the same time, smoking alone, in your yard, isn't very exciting, so the use stopped.
(Aside from smoking in the yard, said kid would be informed that if I'd ever find out - and my smell is awfully good in these things - that he/she'd smoke elsewhere than in our yard with me present in the house, he'd be grounded until he/she's 35 with bars on the windows and bedroom doors closed from the outside.)
I had the same issue with our vacuum, and once I washed all the filters (there are 3 or so, the hepa and then 2 other ones) it never overheated again. If you haven't tried that yet, it's worth a shot. Wash in the sink until the water that comes off is clear, let it dry for AT LEAST 24 hours, and replace.
I think (not sure, never really remember brands) the one we have now is a Philips. I'm okay with it, nothing spectacular, but as long as I empty/clean it on time, it does it's job.
I'm so sorry for you losing one baby, but one completely healthy one is definitely something to be happy about as well. Sending you healing vibes and happy&healthy 6 more months vibes!

Public intoxication laws apply, and being drunk in traffic (applies to walking too). I doubt there are any laws explicitly forbidding you to ride a bike when you're blind, or are fuzzy sighted or whatever. It something no-one would do, definitely not in traffic. And as I said, I'm sure insurance companies have something in their policies.
I'm not 100 percent sure about any of this, but as I know Dutch law, I really really don't think it'd be forbidden. Probably because they can't make it illegal to be stupid!
Answer needs to be updated with an almond and coffee crumb cake. Yesterday. And it's all clogged's fault for talking to me about cake flavors. DH thanks you!

I really like Alyson Hannigan's style if I go for realistic - sorta. Sienna Miller is really cute too - already less realistic. I'd kill to be as fabulous as Kristin Cavallari, and I'd really hate to have the Uma Thurman look. All the pictures of her just seem super tacky/frumpy/both.

Cool, thanks everyone! Will check with the bookstore here tomorrow to see if they accidentally do have it in stock and if not I'll order it (your excitement has me thinking 'screw the cost, I want the dang book!' plus the fact that I still have a gift certificate for that store.)
I'll PM you my e-mail address, I'm pretty good at legal and medical Dutch to English translations if you need to know what they mean (as I can look up the original dutch terms)
I hate the D in DH, DD, etc. but I have to put "DBF" to distinguish from "best friend." However, I always think "DB Sweeney"
There was a lot of acronym-clash on the book board, since common titles all got abbreviated. A lot of them overlapped with computer terms, which led to some weird results in my head!
I think follow up and further update are both correct, whereas eff you isn't...
yeah, I think I saw one for 7 pounds plus shipping. Have to check how much shipping to here is, otherwise just use my 'boekenbon' that the ILs gave me for this and pay the difference (and have ABC order one for me.)
as an app you mean? we have an iPad, but DH hogs that, and I have an android phone... I have a nifty fertility app, but that's not a full on book. <runs and skips to phone to check it out>
Our mail delivery was eating all bran, honestly, however lately he's switched to the most sugary cereal you can find, doused in chocolate milk with a side of sugar on top.
I think though, as we have been receiving all kinds of other mail, that the company just hasn't sent it out in time. And their not friggin responding to my 'where the heck is it' e-mail either. I guess that's just 18 euros gone.
Oh well...
Re: TCOYF, they MIGHT have it at the American Book Center, but they're not sure if it's in stock (WTH wouldn't you know, but whatevs) and it's 28 euros for a used copy if they have it. Sigh. I hate those crazy ass high book prices here, and the fact that it's not available for the kindle.
You're wanting to testing for ovulation or test for pregnancy?
Do you have the book "Taking Charge of Your Fertility" already?
At this moment, through charting, I'm pretty sure I'm in ovulation week (actually think ovulation should be today, but obviously not sure because I don't have those damn test!) I still have 1 HPT left from last cycle, but I'm nowhere near ready to test yet.
I don't have the book yet. This is just our 2nd cycle trying (and the first one doesn't really count, because we didn't decide to start trying until halfway through my cycle, o-day, so I knew that the chances of it being successful were very, very , very slim. This is the first full, real cycle. I kinda figured I'd wait with the books and stuff.
But from popcorn's response I figure it's worth getting and reading immediately. Might have to see if the local American book store has it (and hope my friend's friend isn't working, because I'm not telling anyone we're TTC besides you ladies!)
I love love love it when my house is tidy. I just HATE chores. Honestly, if we ever win the lottery, I think the first thing I'll do is hire a full-time maid!
I feel the same way. Unfortunately I think to win the lottery I'd have to play it first.
Honestly, I don't think playing makes your chances that much bigger, percentage wise (I mean, 0 percent or 0.000000000001 percent, same difference)
I have bank accounts with ABN-Amro and ING. I totally prefer ABN-Amro. It's the only company in NL that has EVER given me good customer service, plus they have a good number of actual offices (compared to other banks), and a good amount of their offices have regular Saturday or evening hours. Barclays has a huge office here, but no branches. I think it's only mortgages and such that they do here.
Cell provider, it really depends on what you want. Vodafone and KPN have the very best coverage, but are slightly more expensive (KPN most expensive, both have about the same coverage). If you're waiting to get the phone contract until you are in NL, I'd recommend ordering your phone and contract from belsimpel.nl, again excellent customer service, both by phone and e-mail (which is a rarity in NL) and they have the best/biggest selection of phones. If you need to get through the first week or so just buy a pre-paid sim card (you can get those everywhere, really) and put it into your Spanish phone. If you like your Spanish phone and would like to keep that, I'd just go to a phone-shop and get a sim-only plan to start with. Much, much cheaper and they can activate it on the spot and you should be able to call as you walk out the store. - You will need proof of address and a bank account to get a phone plan.
Pet hotel/boarding, I honestly have no idea. Don't have pets and when we did have pets (as a child) we always just had neighbors or friends come by to feed them/clean cages when we were away. The word for pet-boarding-place is 'kennel' though. Maybe Hey Y'all knows more about this, as she had pets while living in NL.
Guess what, Zilveren Kruis actually has a decent English language website, with info about what packages to choose (and what they do and don't offer in which package). Check it out here.
Thing is with Dutch insurance is that YOU choose what you want to insure and how much you pay. You don't even have to go with the one your employer (your DH's in this case) suggests. The only reason they suggest that one, is that they have a deal with them and you get a discount. That's for 'basic insurance', the national plan everyone in NL has to have (and what it covers is decided by government - the basics, basically). The supplemental modules/plans are up to yourself and usually hard to come by if you don't get them from the same insurance company.
The most extensive plans MIGHT require medical checks before acceptance (that's usually just for the they cover everything, but the premium isn't that high plan') also dental is always separate and whether or not that's useful for you, totally depends on the quality of your teeth.
Anyway, the English insurance site is here: www.zilverenkruis.nl/English/insurances/supplementary-insurances/Pages/default.aspx And using the 'pakketkeuze assistent' should really help you figure out what works best for your family! (oh, and you can change your insurance and which supplements you have annually on Jan 1st to go to a cheaper package, or with most companies 'whenever' when you go to a more expensive package. If you change halfway through the year (unless it's your first time getting insurance in NL) they might have a waiting period of 6 months for specific benefits. So make sure you're not getting in on a too low program and have to change it after 2 weeks or so...
The fact that I did 7 FULL loads of laundry last Sunday should tell you enough...
We're both not organized. I keep trying to come up with new systems that work for 2 or 3 weeks and keeps the house all organized and clean and nice, and then, suddenly there's something interesting on tv at chore time, or I'm sore, or I have a headache, or we forgot to run the dishwasher and that 1 time not doing it, will turn the whole system to crap. The house will turn into a giant mess until we either have visitors over OR I suddenly out of the blue find an app or come up with a new system that gets us started again.
The cycle just goes on and on and on. I love love love it when my house is tidy. I just HATE chores. Honestly, if we ever win the lottery, I think the first thing I'll do is hire a full-time maid!
